Police: Bus driver in crash that killed 15 UPSI students had 18 summonses, 13 for speeding
PETALING JAYA, June 10 — The driver of the bus involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students yesterday had a record of 18 traffic summonses, according to Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department director Yusri Hassan Basri.
According to Sinar Harian, Yusri said 13 of the summonses were for speeding, three for not wearing a seatbelt, one for failing to have a third brake light, and another for involvement in a previous accident.
He added that a special task force involving police, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research, the road transport department, the Land Public Transport Agency, and other relevant bodies has been formed to investigate the crash.
'We will complete the investigation papers as soon as possible. Our investigation will be thorough and cover all aspects, including the driver's past offences, background, activities and career history,' he was quoted as saying.
The crash occurred early Monday morning when the bus, travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to UPSI's campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, collided with the rear of a Perodua Alza, veered off the road, and overturned along the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding.
Sinar Harian reported that the task force's findings will address potential safety lapses and preventive measures.

Tuan Muhammad Adham, who sustained a fractured upper arm, is receiving treatment at Taiping Hospital in Perak. He said two of his close friends lost their lives that night, and another friend sustained injuries on his shoulders. On Monday, the chartered bus en route from Jertih to UPSI's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after colliding with a Perodua Alza multipurpose vehicle along the East Coast Highway in Gerik. Thirty-three people were also injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza.

Gerik bus crash: Driver arrested after hospital discharge
IPOH: Police have arrested the driver of the bus involved in the crash which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik on Monday. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the 39-year-old was arrested about 5.45pm after being discharged from Taiping Hospital. He said the man would be taken to the Gerik police headquarters to facilitate investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. "We are currently awaiting further instructions from the state prosecution director on whether the bus driver can be charged in court tomorrow. "As far as the police are concerned, we are ready," he said when contacted. It is learnt that the man was accompanied by three policemen, believed to be from the Gerik police headquarters, when they left the hospital's compound. It was earlier reported that the bus driver was among those injured. Noor Hisam had said the driver sustained injuries to his hand. On Monday, the bus, carrying 42 UPSI students, was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza at Km53 of the East-West Highway in Gerik. Thirteen died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The driver, his attendant, the other UPSI students and the family of four in the Alza all sustained injuries of varying degrees.
