China suspends tariffs on US goods for 90 days, commerce ministry says

[BEIJING] China on Tuesday said it will suspend additional tariffs on US goods for 90 more days, its commerce ministry said in a statement, after President Donald Trump signed an executive order extending the tariff truce.
China will maintain its tariffs on US goods at 10 per cent, the statement said, and take action to address non-tariff barriers facing American products. REUTERS

South Korean President Lee to visit Japan for summit with Ishiba, Seoul says

Kim Min-Hee/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo SEOUL - South Korean President Lee Jae Myung will visit Japan between August 23-24 and hold a summit with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Lee's office said at a briefing on Wednesday. The leaders will discuss ways to improve regional peace and boost trilateral cooperation with Washington, Kang Yoo-jung, Lee's spokesperson, told reporters. Kang did not specify the date of the summit during Lee's two-day visit. Lee has in the past been critical of efforts by administrations in Seoul to improve ties with Tokyo, though when he met Ishiba for their first summit on the sidelines of a G7 meeting in Canada in June they vowed to deepen the relationship. Ties between the U.S. allies have often been strained, rooted in historical disputes stemming from Japan's colonial rule over the Korean peninsula from 1910-1945. Their second summit meeting will also take place as the Asian economic powerhouses grapple with the implications of U.S. tariffs imposed by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Lee's trip to Japan comes just ahead of his visit to the U.S., where he is scheduled to hold a summit with Trump on August 25. REUTERS

Thailand's central bank cuts key rate by 25 bps, as expected

[BANGKOK] Thailand's central bank lowered its key interest rate by a quarter point on Wednesday (Aug 13), its fourth cut in 10 months as it looks to support a sluggish economy grappling with negative inflation and the impact of US tariffs. The Bank of Thailand's (BOT) monetary policy committee unanimously voted to reduce the one-day repurchase rate by 25 basis points to 1.50 per cent, the lowest in more than two years. The BOT had held the key rate at its June meeting following back-to-back cuts at reviews in February and April. It had also cut rates in October last year. Twenty-three of 28 economists in a Reuters poll had predicted a quarter-point reduction this week. The other five had expected no rate change. The central bank in a statement said the Thai economy was expected to expand this year and next close to earlier assessments, but US trade policies would exacerbate structural problems and weaken competitiveness, with small businesses vulnerable. 'The committee views that monetary policy should be accommodative going forward to support the economy,' the statement said. It expects growth in South-east Asia's second-largest economy to slow in the second half of the year, it said. The economy has struggled with weak consumption, high household debt, slowing tourism, trade uncertainty and US tariffs. The central bank has said the economy might have grown about 3 per cent annually in the second quarter of 2025 but would feel the impact of US tariffs and weakening consumption later this year. Wednesday's meeting was the last for governor Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput. New governor Vitai Ratanakorn will take over on Oct 1, and he has said rate cuts will support growth. The next policy review will be on Oct 8. In June, the BOT predicted 2025 economic growth of 2.3 per cent, with export growth of 4 per cent, after factoring in US tariff rates of 18 per cent. The economy expanded 2.5 per cent last year, lagging peers. Last month, the US reduced its tariff rate to 19 per cent on imported goods from Thailand, down from the initial 36 per cent level and more aligned with other countries in the region. There are still uncertainties relating to US tariffs on transshipments via Thailand from third countries. REUTERS

DBS sees rising demand for yuan settlements from Chinese exporters

[SINGAPORE] DBS Group, South-east Asia's largest lender by assets, is seeing growing interest from Chinese exporters to settle trades in renminbi (RMB), or yuan, particularly with counterparts in Latin America and the Middle East, a senior executive said. 'Right now, you see the Chinese exporters, some are beginning to ask and say, I'm going to sell in RMB, please settle in RMB,' said Han Kwee Juan, speaking to Reuters in his first media interview since becoming DBS' group head of institutional banking in January. 'Is that a trend that will continue? I think that it's something that they will continue to ask for as they trade more with the rest of the world, outside of the US,' he said. The shift comes as decades of unwavering faith in the US dollar's dominance in global trade and capital flows faces scrutiny. Major emerging market economies are stepping up efforts to trade in local currencies, underscoring efforts to reduce reliance on the dollar in the global financial system. However, Han said that most settlements outside of China remain 'largely in dollars'. The bank's subsidiary, DBS China, has been a member of China's Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS) since 2015. BT in your inbox Start and end each day with the latest news stories and analyses delivered straight to your inbox. Sign Up Sign Up China launched CIPS in 2015 to promote the yuan's usage in international trade. It allows global banks to clear cross-border yuan transactions directly onshore, instead of through clearing banks in offshore yuan hubs. DBS's settlement flows through the CIPS clearing system grew 30 per cent year-on-year in 2024, Han said, though he maintained that the shift toward more yuan-denominated settlements remains gradual. In a wide-ranging interview, Han spoke of how businesses are dealing with the uncertainty over Trump's tariffs and outlined DBS's growth strategy in the current economic environment. 'One of the things that we have been growing this year is we have been growing our capability for FI clearing,' he said. 'We have been quite purposeful in terms of investment that we have made in the clearing capabilities.' The bank is also looking to capitalise on its institutional banking business to drive its return on equity, which currently stands at 17 per cent, Han said. Last week, DBS posted a quarterly profit that beat estimates, sending its shares to a record high. 'By being able to work with the customers holistically, not just with lending, but also with advisory and as well as cash management, enables us to not only just look at lending or (net interest income) as a source of revenue, but really growing our fee-based revenues,' Han said.
