Canada Man Arrested For Killing Daughter Had Affair, Almost Lost One Eye In Ethiopia Attack

Besides his daughter Melina, Luciano had no ties to Montreal, with his primary base of operations located in Ethiopia.
Luciano Frattolin, a 45-year-old Canadian man, has been arrested for the alleged murder of his nine-year-old daughter while on vacation in the United States. According to reports, Frattolin—an Ethiopian-born businessman—was said to have loved his daughter deeply but did not want the responsibilities of raising a child.
'He loved his daughter, but he didn't like the idea of being tied down," a former friend of Luciano told the Montreal Gazette. Reportedly, Melina's mother was granted full custody following her divorce from Luciano, with the father permitted to visit his daughter only once a year.
Besides his daughter Melina, Luciano had no ties to Montreal, with his primary base of operations located in Ethiopia. Reports also indicate that Luciano had an extramarital affair while living in Ethiopia, which came to light when his wife travelled there to visit him.
The revelation reportedly surfaced around the time Luciano discovered a mine in partnership with a Beijing-based company. In 2019, the venture secured a 20-year concession to extract iron ore.
However, just days after the deal was finalised, Luciano was assaulted—a violent attack that, according to a friend quoted by the Montreal Gazette, left him with permanent damage to one of his eyes.
His wife visited him in Ethiopia after the assault, and got to know about her husband's affair with another woman. The couple got a divorce after this, with the mother getting full custody of the daughter.
On Saturday, Luciano called 911 to report the alleged kidnapping of his daughter, claiming she had disappeared after he stopped his car to urinate. However, as the investigation unfolded, authorities determined that Luciano had misled them.
The following day, the body of the nine-year-old girl was discovered. An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was drowning.

HIV-Infected Girl Raped, Forced To Abort At Children's Home In Maharashtra

Last Updated: An HIV-infected minor was allegedly raped for two years at Sevalay shelter in Maharashtra's Latur. She was forced to abort when pregnant. Six were booked, four arrested. In a shocking incident, an HIV-infected minor was allegedly raped for two years at a children's shelter in Maharashtra's Latur district and was later forced to undergo an abortion when she became pregnant. In her complaint filed at Dhoki police station in her native Dharashiv district, the 16-year-old victim claimed that she was raped at least four times by an employee between July 13, 2023 and July 23 this year at Sevalay, a home for HIV-infected children in Hasegaon, news agency PTI reported. After she fell ill, she was taken to a hospital where tests revealed she was four months pregnant, following which the accused got a doctor to perform an abortion procedure without her consent, the news agency reported citing an official. The victim further claimed that she was threatened to not disclose the ordeal to anyone. The girl also wrote a letter to officials and dropped it into a complaint box. The institution's management, however, did not help her and tore up the letter, the official said. 'As per her complaint, the child was at the institution for the past two years. She was allegedly raped by an employee of the children's home four times. The institution's management did not help her and even tore up a letter she had marked for officials and had dropped into a complaint box," the official said. Based on the complaint, six people were booked by Dhoki police, including the founder and superintendent of the shelter, the employee who allegedly raped her, and the doctor who carried out the abortion procedure. After the case was transferred to Ausa police station, in whose jurisdiction the alleged incidents took place, four persons were arrested, Latur Superintendent of Police Amol Tambe told the news agency. He identified the four as Sevalay founder Ravi Bapatle, its superintendent Rachna Bapatle, employees Amit Mahamuni and Pooja Waghmare. Unknown gunmen kill 6, wound 20 in attack on court building in southeast Iran

Last Updated: Dubai, Jul 26 (AP) Unknown attackers launched a gun and grenade attack on a court building in southeast Iran Saturday, killing six people, including a child and wounding 20, state TV reported. The report said security forces killed three of the gunmen in the armed clash in the country's restive southern province of Sistan and Baluchestan. It did not identify any of the victims. State TV said the attack happened in the province's capital city of Zahedan. Police and security forces immediately took control of the site, 1,130 kilometres or 700 miles southeast of the capital, Tehran. A report by the semiofficial Tasnim news agency, believed to be close to security forces, blamed the attack on the militant group Jaish al-Adl, which wants independence for Iran's eastern Sistan and Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan provinces. The province, bordering Afghanistan and Pakistan, has been the site of occasional deadly clashes involving militant groups, armed drug smugglers and Iranian security forces. In October, an attack on an Iranian police convoy in the province killed at least 10 officers. view comments First Published: July 26, 2025, 15:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
