Amazon to invest US$54bil in UK over 3 years: govt

LONDON: Online retail giant Amazon will invest US$54 billion in the UK over the next three years, the government said Tuesday, a boost for Prime Minister Keir Starmer as he struggles to kickstart the economy.
Starmer, who met Amazon CEO Andy Jassy last week, said the announcement "adds another major win to Britain's basket and is a massive vote of confidence in the UK as the best place to do business.
"It means thousands of new jobs – real opportunities for people in every corner of the country to build careers, learn new skills, and support their families.
"Whether it's cutting-edge AI or same-day delivery, this deal shows that our Plan for Change is working – bringing in investment, driving growth, and putting more money in people's pockets," he added.
The £40 billion will be used to build four distribution centres, creating an estimated 4,000 jobs, and to renovate the historic Bray Film Studios, acquired in July 2024.
In December, Amazon signed an agreement with Games Workshop, the British company that owns the rights to "Warhammer 40,000", to produce films and TV series based on the futuristic fantasy universe.
The project is set to star Henry Cavill, known for his roles in in "Superman" and "The Witcher."
The investment also includes part of the £8 billion previously announced in September 2024 for building, operating and maintaining data centres in the UK, aimed at boosting artificial intelligence (AI) computer capacity.
The announcement coincides with the publication of the government's "Modern Industrial Strategy", which outlines how the state and high-growth industries will collaborate in the future.
It offers a rare piece of good news for the Labour government, which has been buffeted by US tariffs and global conflicts and seen its domestic policy of tax hikes and public investment fail to deliver on its promise of growth.
Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds will visit Amazon's headquarters in London on Tuesday to mark the announcement.
"Our Modern Industrial Strategy will ensure the UK is the best country to invest and do business, and seeing massive international firms like Amazon bank on Britain shows we are on the right track," he said.
Amazon already employs more than 75,000 people in over 100 sites across the UK.
Jassy said the company was "bringing innovation and job creation to communities throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
"Amazon has been proud to serve our customers in the UK for the past 27 years. Thanks to their support, we've grown to be part of over 100 communities nationwide, from developing drone technology in Darlington to producing world-class entertainment at our studios in Bray," he added.
Jassy announced last February that Amazon would invest more than US$100 billion this year, primarily to boost its cloud and AI capabilities.
Australia was the focus last week, when the US firm announced US$13.3 billion over five years for its data centres, the largest technology investment ever made in the country.
In June, Amazon also announced major investments in North Carolina (US$10 billion) and Pennsylvania (US$20 billion), again for data centres and AI projects.
Amazon is currently under investigation by the UK Food Regulator, suspected of late payments to food suppliers.
If found guilty, Amazon could be fined up to one percent of its annual UK turnover.

Young Anwar Once Burned 'Subversive' Book By Tunku Abdul Rahman, Student Reminds

Subscribe to our FREE Last weekend, a group of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students burned a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim after they closed their 'Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0' rally in Kota Kinabalu. The likeness of Anwar accompanied by the phrase 'Madani Pelindung Rasuah Sabah' (Madani: Protector of Sabah's Corrupt) was set ablaze by Suara Mahasiswa UMS, a student activist group at the university. According to Free Malaysia Today, more than 100 took part in the rally to protest against a scandal involving the This act has prompted authorities to begin Quick history lesson: The Sedition Act 1948 is a law that criminalises speech and actions that are deemed to have a 'seditious tendency'. It was originally enacted by the British colonial government to suppress communist insurgents but it remains in force today. The definition of 'seditious tendency' is pretty broad and open to interpretation. 'I burned Anwar's face in Sabah because I took Anwar burning Tunku Abdul Rahman's book as an example,' the caption wrote. Saya bakar muka Anwar di Sabah sebab saya contohi Anwar bakar buku Tunku Abdul Rahman. THREAD — Fadhil #GempurRasuahSabah (@fxdhilss) The book, titled '13 Mei, Sebelum Dan Selepas' was a perspective on the 13 May 1969 racial riot incident written by Malaysia's Father of Independence. However, a handful of students from the Malay Language Society of Universiti Malaya (PBMUM) viewed the book as subversive to society. They felt that the book sent a one-sided narrative of the 13 May incident and challenged the government at the time to take accountability. However, there are those who criticised his actions for destroying historical records and impeding freedom of speech. This led the Anwar-led language committee to hold a ceremony to bury the book by burning it in public. The student who posted the photos commented on his own Tweet, with a tinge of sarcasm, 'I think Anwar Ibrahim, after watching our video, will be moved to recall his memories at the University of Malaya in the 70s. But that's just a feeling, my friend. The reality is that Anwar is now the Prime Minister of Malaysia, not a student activist'. Share your thoughts with us via TRP's . Decision on Syed Saddiq's appeal tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: The Court of Appeal will deliver its decision tomorrow on the appeal by Muar member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman against his conviction and sentence for abetting in criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property and money laundering involving Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (Armada) funds. The decision on the appeal would be made by a three-member panel comprising Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Datuk Azman Abdullah and Datuk Noorin Badaruddin at 9 am. Lawyers Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden and Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, representing Syed Saddiq, and Deputy Public Prosecutors Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin and Farah Ezlin Yusop Khan, completed their submissions before the panel on April 17. On Nov 9, 2023, the Kuala Lumpur High Court sentenced Syed Saddiq, 32, to seven years imprisonment, two strokes of the cane, and a RM10 million fine after finding him guilty on four charges of abetting CBT, misusing property, and money laundering involving Armada funds. He was convicted of abetting former Armada assistant treasurer Rafiq Hakim Razali, who had been entrusted with RM1 million of party funds, in committing CBT by misappropriating the money at CIMB Bank Berhad, Menara CIMB KL Sentral, Jalan Sentral 2, on March 6, 2020. The former Youth and Sports Minister was also found guilty of misusing RM120,000 from an Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise account with Maybank Islamic Berhad by directing Rafiq Hakim to dispose of the funds at Malayan Banking Berhad, Jalan Pandan 3/6A, Taman Pandan Jaya, between April 8 and April 21, 2018. Additionally, the former Armada chief was convicted on two counts of money laundering, involving the transfer of RM50,000 each from his Maybank Islamic Berhad account into his Amanah Saham Bumiputera account, believed to be illegal proceeds, at a bank in Jalan Persisiran Perling, Taman Perling, Johor Bahru, on June 16 and 19, 2018.

Seoul Foreign Minister pick to prioritise US-North Korea talks

A visitor uses binoculars to watch the North Korean side of the Demilitarised Zone dividing the two Koreas, from South Korea's Odusan Unification Observatory in Paju on June 12, 2025. South Korea's new Foreign Minister has pledged to restore severed communication channels with the North and reopen talks to defuse tension. - AFP) SEOUL: South Korea's foreign minister nominee Cho Hyun pledged to make resuming the US-North Korea dialogue a top priority, underscoring new President Lee Jae Myung's vision of building lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. Facilitating talks between Washington and Pyongyang will be central to the Lee administration's diplomatic strategy, the former ambassador to the United Nations told reporters on Tuesday (June 24), a day after his nomination. Cho emphasised that the issue must be handled with "careful consideration and coordination,' and any engagement initiative would require the combined efforts of government, lawmakers and civil society. "I believe that achieving a successful North Korea-US dialogue to establish peace on the Korean peninsula is one of the top priorities,' he said. "We will work closely with the US and like-minded countries to ensure there are no obstacles in advancing the goal.' A return to high-stakes diplomacy with North Korea could reshape regional security calculations, especially as its leader Kim Jong Un's regime remains largely unresponsive to overtures from the US and South Korea while deepening its military ties with Russia. Reviving the dialogue could also help South Korea reassert its role as a regional mediator as the US-China rivalry simmers and as North Korea pushes to rapidly develop its military capabilities and nuclear ambitions. Lee has pledged to restore severed communication channels with the North and reopen talks to defuse tension. Speaking at a cabinet meeting Tuesday, on the eve of the 1950-53 Korean War anniversary, Lee called for stepping up the campaign to foster peace on the peninsula, saying security issues are directly linked to the economy. During his first term as president, Donald Trump made unprecedented diplomatic overtures to Kim as he aimed to defuse nuclear tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Trump's bold strategy included three high-profile summits and direct personal engagement, marking a departure from traditional US policy. While the talks garnered global attention and temporarily eased hostilities, they ultimately failed to yield concrete denuclearisation commitments, leaving the regime's weapons programme largely intact. Trump has said he is open to renewing contact with Kim in his second term, though the North Korean leader has been coy. Trump tried to send a letter to Kim but was rebuffed, according a report by NK News earlier this month. Cho also struck a pragmatic tone on managing alliance tensions with the US, including issues related to defence costs burden-sharing and tariffs under Trump. Cho said the Lee government would pursue a "calm and wise' approach grounded in what the president dubbed pragmatic diplomacy. President Lee's administration represents a pivot from the hawkish stance of his conservative predecessor, reopening the door to potential engagement with Pyongyang. In a symbolic first move, Lee halted border loudspeaker broadcasts, prompting a reciprocal gesture from Kim. North Korea convened a major political gathering over the weekend to assess progress in achieving its economic goals and to recalibrate its domestic agenda, state media KCNA said Tuesday. There was no rhetoric targeting Seoul or Washington in that report. Cho said relations with Beijing and Moscow would require delicate handling, while the current thaw in ties with Tokyo requires "out-of-the-box' thinking and "quiet diplomacy' to resolve historical disputes. - Bloomberg
