Major family-owned construction firm to change hands after 57 years
Cubby Construction had worked on many of Carlisle's major infrastructure projects.
In late 2024, it emerged that Cubby had moved away from its contract on the Carlisle Southern Link Road project.
Director Tommy Cubby told the News & Star that financial issues with working on and subsequently leaving the project led to an agreement with investment and acquisition company Svella Plc.
He said that the damage to the Sands Centre roof, another Cubby project, during Storm Eowyn in early 2025 'compounded' the temporary woes.
Negotiations with Svella now seem to be nearing a conclusion after the company issued a statement.
A Svella Plc spokesperson said: "Svella Plc is pleased to confirm that, following agreement by all parties, it is targeting completion of the solvent acquisition of Cubby Construction Limited by the end of June.
"This development represents a highly positive outcome for customers, employees and suppliers alike.
"The acquisition will ensure continuity of operations for Cubby Construction and provide the investment necessary to support the long-term growth and success of the business."
It is understood Cubby employs more than 200 members of staff.

You Can't Break the Laws of Economics
Nearly every week, someone writing for a major news outlet argues that economics has failed. Our models are too abstract. Our predictions are always wrong. President Trump's recent firing of Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer is the latest notable example of this anti-economics sentiment. Let me make what appears to have become a radical argument: Simple economics is surprisingly good at making real-world predictions.
