Starmer could attend second US-Russia meeting on ending Ukraine war, says Trump

The Prime Minister has been a key player in the group which has also included French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office at the White House, Mr Trump said: 'We have a meeting with President (Vladimir) Putin tomorrow, I think it's going to be a good meeting.
'But the more important meeting will be the second meeting that we're having. We're going to have a meeting with President Putin, President Zelensky, myself, and maybe we'll bring some of the European leaders along. Maybe not.'
He added: 'I think President Putin will make peace. I think President Zelensky will make peace. We'll see if they can get along. And if they can it will be great.'
Mr Trump said the summit aims to bring peace to Ukraine, and 'save a lot of lives'.
Earlier this week the US leader told his European counterparts that his goal for the summit was to secure a ceasefire.
Sir Keir chaired a meeting of the 'coalition of the willing' on Wednesday – a European-led effort to send a peacekeeping force to Ukraine to monitor any deal – and said there was a 'viable' chance of a truce.
It came after Sir Keir and Mr Zelensky met on Thursday at Downing Street, where they said there was 'strong resolve' for peace in Ukraine.

The two leaders embraced as the red carpet was rolled out for Mr Zelensky's arrival in Downing Street, and they later had breakfast.
They expressed cautious optimism about the prospect of a truce 'as long as Putin takes action to prove he is serious' about ending the war, a Downing Street statement said.
In a separate statement, Mr Zelensky said there had been discussions about the security guarantees required to make any deal 'truly durable if the United States succeeds in pressing Russia to stop the killing'.
But concerns linger over the prospect of Kyiv being excluded from negotiations over its own future, and pressured to cede territory, after Mr Trump suggested any agreement may need to involve 'swapping of land'.
Ukraine has already rejected any proposal that would compromise its borders.
In a readout of the morning meeting between Sir Keir and Mr Zelensky, a Downing Street spokesman said: 'They had a private breakfast where they discussed yesterday's meetings.
'They agreed there had been a powerful sense of unity and a strong resolve to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.'

During the meeting on Thursday, Mr Zelensky urged the UK to join PURL – Nato's Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List initiative – to provide weapons to Kyiv.
'It is important that, within the framework of the coalition of the willing, we should all be able to achieve effective formats for security co-operation,' he later said.
'We also discussed the continuation of support programmes for our army and our defence industry. Under any scenario, Ukraine will maintain its strength.'
The Times reported that Britain was planning to scale back its plans for a military peacekeeping force in Ukraine.
UK military chiefs are said to be considering air reassurance over western Ukraine, training support to the Ukrainian military and the clearance of mines from the Black Sea.
The Government has been contacted for comment.
Further sanctions could be imposed on Russia should the Kremlin fail to engage and the UK is already working on its next package of measures targeting Moscow, the Prime Minister said.
'We're ready to support this, including from the plans we've already drawn up to deploy a reassurance force once hostilities have ceased,' Sir Keir told allies on Wednesday.
'It is important to remind colleagues that we do stand ready also to increase pressure on Russia, particularly the economy, with sanctions and wider measures as may be necessary.'

Hillary Clinton urges Trump not to cede Ukrainian land to Putin

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she would nominate United States President Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize if he successfully brokered a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. The condition for this nomination is that the peace agreement must not involve Ukraine conceding any territory to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Her comments came as Trump is scheduled to meet with Putin in Alaska to discuss potential peace negotiations for the conflict. Clinton made the declaration on the Raging Moderates podcast, saying she aimed to incentivize Trump to make a deal that did not allow 'capitulation' to Putin, 'aided and abetted by the United States.' She emphasised that Trump has an opportunity to be the "architect" of a deal that prevents Russia from retaining seized Ukrainian areas.

India's Modi pushes for self-reliance in Independence Day speech amid threat of US tariffs

Prime minister Narendra Modi marked India 's 78 years of Independence on Friday by urging the nation to move towards more self-reliance amid the looming threat of additional US tariffs. Addressing the country from New Delhi's 17th-century, Mughal-era Red Fort, he said everything from fertilisers to jet engines and EV batteries should be manufactured in India. "Farmers, fishermen, cattle rearers are our top priorities," Mr Modi said in his customary annual address. "Modi will stand like a wall against any policy that threatens their interests. India will never compromise when it comes to protecting the interests of our farmers," he said. Mr Modi did not mention the tariffs or the US in his speech that lasted nearly two hours. Last week, US president Donald Trump imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, citing New Delhi's continued imports of Russian oil in a move that sharply escalated tensions between the two nations. Although local manufacturing and self-reliance have been Mr Modi's key focus areas for years now, the push is seen to have gained urgency amid ongoing global trade tensions and supply chain disruptions. "The need of the hour is to take a resolve for building a strong India ... I want our traders, shopkeepers to display boards for Swadeshi [Made in India] products," he said. He said made-in-India semiconductor chips would hit the market by the end of this year and that India was pushing for self-reliance in producing critical minerals with exploration underway at more than 1,200 locations. Mr Trump's tariffs threaten to disrupt India's access to its largest export market, where shipments totalled nearly $87bn (£ bn) in 2024, hitting sectors like textiles, footwear, shrimp, gems and jewellery. Trade talks between New Delhi and Washington collapsed after five rounds of negotiations over disagreement on opening India's vast farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil purchases. The prime minister announced India would set up a new defence system called 'Sudarshan Chakra' in the aftermath of India's four-day military conflict with Pakistan in May. "India has decided that it will not tolerate nuclear threats. For a long time, nuclear blackmail had been going on but this blackmail will not be tolerated now," Mr Modi said. Pakistani prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday announced the creation of a new "Army Rocket Force Command" to bolster the country's defense capabilities. Sharif made this announcement during a speech marking Independence Day celebrations, but gave no further details. India celebrates its Independence Day one day after Pakistan. The two states came into existence as a result of the bloody partition of British India in 1947. The process sparked some of the worst communal violence the world has seen and left hundreds of thousands dead. It triggered one of the largest human migrations in history and some 12 million people fled their homes.

Hillary Clinton admits she will nominate Donald Trump for Nobel Peace Prize if he pulls off major promise

HILLARY Clinton has admitted she would nominate her former presidential rival Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he managed to end the meatgrinder war in Ukraine. But, the former first lady warned Trump that he must convince tyrant Vladimir Putin to withdraw Russian forces from any invaded land, and rule out any territorial swaps. 7 7 7 Clinton shared the revelation ahead of Trump's high-stakes summit with Putin, which will be held at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base, located outside of Anchorage. 'I understand from everything I've read, he very much would like to receive the Nobel Peace Prize,' she told the commentator Jessica Tarlow on her Raging Moderates podcast. Clinton told how she would consider nominating Trump for the accolade if he could end the war in Ukraine. But, she warned that Trump would have to agree a deal with one of the terms being Ukraine not losing any land to Moscow. "If we could pull that off, if President Trump were the architect of that, I'd nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize," she said. She explained that she doesn't want to allow a 'capitulation' to Putin. White House officials have touted the idea of Trump being awarded the peace prize - a gong that was won by Barack Obama in December 2009. Officials are reportedly "very serious" about helping Trump win the prize, per The Hill. "There's no question the pressure's on," a former aide, who served in Trump's first term, told The Hill. "Trump sees this prize as the ultimate capstone to how history will remember him." Trump says tyrant Putin's need to kill 'might be in his genes' but onslaught 'hurts his negotiations' as leaders head to Alaska for Ukraine peace summit In July, Karoline Leavitt, the White House Press Secretary claimed: 'It's well past time that President Trump was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.' She said the president had managed to broker around a peace agreement or ceasefire per month over his first six months of his second term. Several world leaders, including Israel prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has backed nominating Trump for the peace prize. Hun Manet, the president of Cambodia, nominated Trump after a deal was struck for a ceasefire following the clashes at the Cambodia-Thailand border. Netanyahu handed over a letter to Trump - a moment that the president described as very meaningful. Pakistan's government also championed a move to nominate Trump, praising the leadership he showed in striking a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Leaders in Rwanda and Gabon have also endorsed Trump. Olivier Nduhungirehe, the Rwandan foreign minister, credited Trump for how he helped end the 30-year conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Reports in the Norwegian press have claimed Trump cold-called the country's finance minister to discuss the peace prize. 'Out of the blue, while finance minister was walking down the street in Oslo, Donald Trump called, he wanted the Nobel prize - and to discuss tariffs," an excerpt in Dagens Næringsliv said. If Trump wins the Nobel Peace Prize, he would join a small club of ex-presidents who achieved the feat. 7 7 Obama was awarded the gong for his work to strengthen international diplomacy. Jimmy Carter won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his human rights work and conflict resolution efforts in his post-White House career. Former president Theodore Roosevelt won the award for his role in ending the Russo-Japanese war that was fought between 1904 and 1905. And, Woodrow Wilson was recognized in 1919 for creating the League of Nations. Trump's meeting with Putin will be his first in six years with the Russian strongman. He warned Putin that Russia faces "very severe" consequences if he doesn't seem interested in striking a peace deal. Ahead of the summit, Russian forces launched aerial attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region and Ukrainian soldiers were forced to evacuate a Donetsk town. During a gaggle on board Air Force One, Trump seemed to imply that Putin's urge for killing may be in his genes. "In [Putin's] mind it helps him make a better deal if they can continue the killing," he told reporters. "Maybe it's a part of the world, maybe it's a part of his fabric, his genes, his genetics but he thinks it gives him strength in negotiating. I think it hurts him." Russian officials have been pictured arriving in Anchorage ahead of the high-stakes summit. Sergey Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, was seen wearing a sweatshirt with Soviet Union branding on it. Lavrov's choice of clothing has been perceived as a troll to the West. Trump-Putin's meeting will not be the first high stakes summit that has taken place in Anchorage. In 1971, President Richard Nixon held a 30-minute discussion with Emperor Hirohito at the Elmendorf-Richardson base. And in 2021, Joe Biden met with senior Chinese officials in Anchorage - just two months into his presidency. But, the choice of Elmendorf-Richardson as a location means that there will be the optics of a Russian president visiting a US military base. The White House had reportedly tried to avoid this possibility in the run-up to the summit but failed to find an alternative location. 7 7
