Young boxers shine at event which has seen Anthony Joshua win at
The fighters were battling at the Haringey Box Cup, one of Europe's largest amateur boxing tournaments, held at Alexandra Palace in London.
Former heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua is a former winner at the prestigious event.
In the quarter-finals of the senior 75kg category, Blackbird Leys ABC's Jamal Franklin beat Tommy Naismith with a dominant display, winning by unanimous decision. Teammate Morris James (youth 75kg) received a bye into the semi-finals.

Johnny Taylor of Banbury took on Scottish national champion Oliver Jackson in the youth 67kg category, but lost on points.
His twin, Chris Taylor, was in outstanding form, outworking Nadeem Harabia for a clean 5-0 victory in the youth 63.5kg group.
James got into the action against Alex Savga, and using sharp combinations and fast hands in the early rounds, he earned a deserved 4-1 split decision win.
Franklin then defeated Joash Oluwatoki, using crisp counters and smooth footwork to edge the bout with a split decision.
Chris Taylor faced Zac Kazimi in his semi-final, and despite boxing well, he came up short on the scorecards in a 4-1 split loss.
In the final, Franklin met Jenson Burrows. He started strong, landing clean shots and slick counters, while avoiding Burrows' aggressive attacks. Franklin sealed a clear win and a deserved gold medal.
James faced Oliver Male, the current Youth Open national champion from Bridlington. He boxed smartly and showed good movement, but the experience of Male showed as James walked away with a silver medal.

Misfits Boxing is getting into the MMA game for its Aug. 30 event in Manchester, England. Before the headlining boxing bouts featuring ex-UFC stars Luke Rockhold, Darren Till and Tony Ferguson, Dillon Danis will return to action against Warren Spencer in a battle for the inaugural Misfits light heavyweight MMA title. It's been nearly two full years since Danis last competed in combat sports, coming up short in a boxing match against Logan Paul in October 2023, which ended a four-year hiatus from combat competition for the former Bellator MMA prospect. Danis went 2-0 in Bellator from 2018-19, however his upcoming match against Spencer marks his return to the sport for the first time in six years. Spencer, on the other hand, makes his MMA debut on Aug. 30 after starting his pro boxing career with a win in April. Calling in through Zoom to confront Danis on Tuesday's edition of "The Ariel Helwani Show," Warren revealed that he has no intentions of playing on the ground with the jiu-jitsu specialist. "I'd be stupid not to think that Dillon wasn't going to come and dive for my legs," Spencer said. "I think he's going to dive for my legs, I really do. I'm going to hit him with a big fresh one-two [combination] down the middle. He's going to go, 'Oh s***, this is real power,' and then he's going to dive for my legs and try and sniff my balls and tap me out. I'm not going to let him. I'm not going to let myself get my leg ripped off on live television or get strangled on live television. I'm tapping. "We're fighting for real. Punches, kicks, knees, elbows, flying dragon kick, or I'm tapping. ... You've shown the world now that when you've got nothing left — look at the Logan Paul fight, when there's nothing left, you die. You shoot for the legs and you die. When you know you've lost, you die." Never one to shy away from a verbal exchange, Danis quickly bantered back and forth with his upcoming opponent. Danis scored first-round submissions in his lone two MMA fights and advised Warren not to follow the footsteps of his previous foes. "I hope you tap quick because it's going to be a bad night," Danis responded. "You're not going to be able to walk. You're going to be taken out on a stretcher when your knees are mangled. "I'd fight you right now in this f***ing room, and I would whoop your ass 10 times out of 10. You don't understand it." Obviously, keeping the fight on the feet is the best path to victory for Spencer, as he admitted and desires. The Brit took it a step further, praising Danis and stating that there was no point in wasting his time learning jiu-jitsu ahead of the match. Before this fight came together, Danis was lined up to take on the aforementioned UFC veteran Ferguson in the now-defunct Global Fight League (GFL). Thanks to his brash, outspoken personality, Danis has previously found himself linked to much more experienced fighters than Spencer, and "The Mechanic" is aware of that. Therefore, he insists he's only trying to help Danis, to an extent. "I want to see Dillon come out and show everybody he's a well-rounded fighter," Spencer said. "He's calling out Jon Jones, all these big, crazy names. Look, you've got to get through 'The Mechanic' first. If you want to show everyone you're a well-rounded fighter and you want to show you can strike, then do it. "I'm going to make you richer. I'm going to give you a stepping stone to be a UFC legend, so you have to like me. Dillon's like my little stepson. What kind of father would I be if I wouldn't support my son?" Ultimately, Danis wasn't overly amused by Spencer's overtures and promised their upcoming fight would be his own return to the win column, while also keeping Danis undefeated in MMA. "It's going to be f***ed up when your stepson takes you down and puts you on your ass," Danis said.

NFL Great J.J. Watt Enjoys Honeymoon Period As Espanyol Shareholder
Dawn is breaking at Espanyol in Spain's La Liga. Fans of the Parakeets, a team less followed and with more grounded aims than local colossus Barcelona, hope it won't be a false one. Meanwhile, ex-defensive end J.J. Watt has a role to play. Now turning his attention towards being an NFL game analyst this coming season at CBS Sports, dissecting a game he knows inside out, Watt got a first taste of another new role—in soccer—last weekend. The 36-year-old looked on from the stands, fists pumping, as Espanyol fought back to beat Atlético Madrid in the surprise result from the opening matchday. The former Houston Texans player is a shareholder of Velocity Sports Limited (VSL), an investment branch of ALK Capital, which is led by U.S. managing partner Alan Pace. VSL acquired Espanyol from the Rastar Group, controlled by the Chinese businessman Chen Yensheng, for a reported €130 million ($152 million) in July (though Rastar retains some input). VSL also controls Premier League club Burnley. Much optimism surrounds Watt's arrival. El Mundo has gone as far as calling him Espanyol's new idol (Spanish). Much of that is down to the American ingratiating himself after saying a couple of phrases in Catalan, enjoying a beer with supporters outside the stadium, and getting behind the players inside it. Watt says he can't return there until February because of work commitments on Sundays, yet it's already a shift from the previous owners, who were rarely present and oversaw two relegations despite initially eyeing a place in the Champions League. Is The Future Bright For Espanyol? There's a peculiarity with ownership in soccer today. Many, even those who attend every fixture or know their side's history back to front, will understand that a foreign executive arriving on the scene doesn't. But if they stay involved, not least by investing in the squad, that's good enough. Very much the face of VSL in Espanyol right now, Watt has made a good impression. Then again, it's the honeymoon period, and at a club whose main target will still be avoiding demotion to the second division. How Espanyol does under U.S. guidance in the long term is what matters. It's worth noting that while Burnley and Espanyol are part of the same investment group, and therefore could be deemed part of the growing multi-club ownership model, the Spanish entity stressed that each will remain independent. Still, when interests are diversified, does Espanyol become the priority, or is that consolidating Burnley's place in the Premier League? Then, there's a cultural angle; Watt may have donned the blue and white scarf, but VSL is adapting to a different division in a different country, and everything that entails. U.S. Links To Spanish Soccer Are Tightening Of course, U.S. majority ownership in European soccer—Spain in this instance—is nothing new. Notably, top-tier Mallorca has former tennis player Andy Kohlberg at the top, while Leganés—relegated to the Segunda in 2024/25—is led by Blue Crow Sports CEO Jeff Luhnow. All the while, the Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) has approved controversial plans to host a first La Liga game on U.S. soil (Miami) this December. As the games and seasons progress, with Espanyol set on taking more scalps after the fast start against Atlético, it will become clearer whether the Catalans benefit from their end of the deal. At least the initial signs are promising.

Newcastle United has told Alexander Isak that he won't be leaving the club this summer after the striker broke his silence on social media and issued a statement.
