The daughter of the man who created the Freddo chocolate bar has revealed the reason why she hasn't bought one since he died.
Leonie Wadin's father Harry Melbourne first crafted the frog-shaped bar around a century ago in Australia, naming it after his friend Fred. When it was first introduced to the market, it cost just a penny.
But Ms Wadin, 74, said her dad 'was disgusted with how small it is now and how much they charge for it,' adding: "He'd roll over in his grave if he could see it now; he'd be disgusted. It was a penny chocolate.
The bar has become a symbol of 'shrinkflation' in the UK – a phenomenon that sees food products both increase in size whilst subtly becoming smaller.
This has been particularly pronounced in chocolate products in recent years, as weather conditions affecting global cocoa production make the cost of producing them more expensive.
Relaunched on the UK market in the 1990s costing just 10p, the Freddo remained at this price until 2005, when it was re-priced at 15p. But this year, it was spotted selling in supermarkets for £1, prompting outcry from fans.
Some now also hold the sweet treat as an ironic barometer of the rising cost of living in the UK, which economists say continues to sit at unsustainable levels far past the peak of the Covid pandemic and cost of living crisis.
Fluctuating interest rates and inflation over the past three decades makes it difficult to verify conclusively just how pronounced the 'shrinkflation' of the Freddo is.
According to the Bank of England 's official inflation calculator, a product worth 10p in 1990 should only cost 24.8p in 2025.
While most Freddo bars in the UK sell for around 36p, that price is still higher than the amount at which it should stand when accounting for inflationary rises.
The bar has also got noticibly smaller, remaining around 18g in the UK, but shrinking to 12g in Australia.
Mondelez International, owners of Cadbury, told Sky News: 'Whilst it's important to stress that as a manufacturer we do not set the retail prices for products sold in shops, our manufacturing and supply chain costs have increased significantly over the past 50 years, and Freddo has become more expensive to make.
'We have absorbed these increased costs wherever possible, however on occasion we have made changes to our list prices or multipack sizes to ensure that we can continue to provide consumers with the Freddo that they love, without compromising on the great taste and quality they expect.'

It said car finance lenders are not yet contacting customers about compensation. People should hang up immediately if they receive such calls and avoid sharing any personal information, the regulator said. Scam calls and texts should be reported by forwarding them to 7726. In general, people should contact the police and their bank if they are worried they may have fallen for a scam. Many banks have signed up to the simple-to-remember 159 phone number service, putting people through to their bank if they are worried about any suspect contact. Nisha Arora, director of special projects at the FCA, said: 'We're aware of scammers calling people and posing as car finance lenders, offering fake compensation and asking for personal details. There is no compensation scheme in place yet. If anyone receives a call like this, hang up immediately and do not share any information.' The FCA recently announced that it will consult on a compensation scheme. Many motor finance firms were not complying with rules or the law by not providing customers with relevant information about commission paid by lenders to the car dealers who sold the loans, it said previously. Nikhil Rathi, chief executive of the FCA, said previously: 'It will take time to establish a scheme but we hope to start getting people any money they are owed next year.'

Wikipedia has lost its High Court challenge against the UK Government over Online Safety Act verification rules. The non-profit Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), along with an anonymous editor (BLN), sought to exempt the platform from regulations introduced in March. They argued that compliance would force the online encyclopaedia to impose verification on unwilling users or limit its UK user base. However, in a Monday judgment, Mr Justice Johnson rejected those claims, suggesting ways to operate within the law "without causing undue damage to Wikipedia's operations". The Online Safety Act includes provisions aimed at reducing harmful content. Part of the regulations classify some sites as category one, which is defined by the number of monthly users a site has, as well as the systems through which information is shared. Rupert Paines, for WMF, told a previous hearing that the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, which was defending the claim, had made the regulations too broad. He said that if Wikipedia is to be classified as category one, and verification is to become mandatory for all users, it would make articles 'gibberish' because content from non-verified users would be filtered out. The regulations were more designed for 'major, profit-making technology companies ' such as Facebook, X and Instagram, he argued, while imposing verification on Wikipedia users would be a breach of their human rights. Cecilia Ivimy KC, for the government, said ministers reviewed Ofcom guidance and considered specifically whether Wikipedia should be exempt from the regulations and rejected that. She said they decided that Wikipedia 'is in principle an appropriate service on which to impose category one duties' and how ministers arrived at that choice was not 'without reasonable foundation nor irrational'. Rejecting WMF and BLN's claims, Mr Justice Johnson said his decision 'does not give Ofcom and the Secretary of State a green light to implement a regime that would significantly impede Wikipedia's operations'. Doing so would mean the government would have to justify the imposition as proportionate, he added. The judge also said that the decision to make Wikipedia a category one service now lies with Ofcom. If that happens, it may open a possible avenue for further legal action. 'Ofcom's decision as to which services fall within category one is a public law decision which is potentially amenable to the court's review on grounds of public law error,' Mr Justice Johnson said.

Walkers launches two surprise new crisp flavours for the first time in decades

Walkers has officially introduced two brand-new crisp flavours to its permanent range for the first time in decades as stores take shoppers by surprise with the never-before-seen additions. The British snack giant has quietly developed the new flavours unbeknownst to crisp fans who can now look forward to trying the Sticky Teriyaki and Masala Chicken packets for themselves. Both of the new flavours are already available to buy from Tesco, with a six-pack of 25g packets costing £2.15. The packaging claims that the Sticky Teriyaki flavour is 'inspired by the flavours of Japan,' while the Masala Chicken takes its inspiration from India. Walkers says it has been working on the flavours for around a year, in a six-step process that saw 63 different flavour submissions analysed. Describing the new flavours, the crisp-maker said: 'With a balance between sweet and tangy, the new Sticky Teriyaki flavour is sure to hit your senses with an array of tastes inspired by flavours from Japan.' 'Packing a punch of flavour, the new Masala Chicken provides a rich and spicy taste and with Tikka Masala being a firm favourite dish in the UK, the new crisps give you a bite sized flavour you can enjoy on the go.' Both flavours are available from 11 August, meaning there is no time to wait for those who want to pick up a packet. The new editions to Walkers core range mark the first time in decades that brand-new flavours have made the cut. Classic flavours Ready Salted, Cheese & Onion and Salt & Vinegar were first introduced in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Other classics like Prawn Cocktail, Roast Chicken and Smoky Bacon came later, around the 1970s. Since then, Walkers has largely focused on limited-edition flavour campaigns, with very few making the leap to the permanent range. Both of the new flavours have appeared in Walkers packets in very different forms before. In the 2018, a '1980s Chicken Tikka Masala' flavour was available for a limited time, while another – the 'Chicken Tackle Masala' – was brought out to coincide with the UEFA Champions League in 2021. There was also a 'Japanese Teriyaki' flavour trialled in 2010 as part of Walkers' 'Flavour Cup' which saw fan-submitted ideas pitted against each other. In the end, the flavour came third with eight per cent of the vote, while the winner – English Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pudding – received 20 per cent. However, both of the new flavours are brand new formulations, developed and tested over the course of the past 12 months. Wayne Newton, senior marketing director at Walkers said: 'Our development team has been on a mission for the past year to find two new flavours that meet the highest standards. After thousands of crisps crunched, flavours tested, and bags rustled, we're pleased to bring something entirely new to the table with Sticky Teriyaki and Masala Chicken.'
