TalkTV presenter and radio broadcaster James Whale dies aged 74

Metro3 days ago
TalkTV host and veteran radio broadcaster James Whale has died at the age of 74.
News of his death was announced by Talk TV in a statement which read: 'The staff, presenters and friends of Talk are devastated at the passing of Talk presenter and broadcasting titan, James Whale MBE, who has died aged 74 after a long battle with cancer.'
In an obituary read on air by colleague and friend Mike Graham, Talk paid tribute to Whale and his outstanding contribution to radio over the last six decades, and his eight years on Talk and talkRADIO.
The British presenter and media personality was originally diagnosed with kidney cancer over 20 years ago—he underwent surgery at the time.
However, in August 2020, he announced that his cancer had returned and spread to other parts of his body, including his spine, brain, and lungs.
Whale faced the condition for a further XXXX years before his death.
After news of his death broke, tributes poured in from across the industry.
Whale was born in Surrey in 1951, initially expressing an interest in archery rather than radio—his first job was as a trainee buyer at Harrods in London.
While working at the upscale department store, he was inspired to become a radio DJ, following in the footsteps of Tony Blackburn, Johnnie Walker, and David 'Kid' Jensen.
He began his broadcasting career in 1970, working for Radio Topshop after initially being turned down for the position, and was working for Metro Radio in the northeast by 1974.
In the 1980s, he launched a TV series, named after himself, on which comedian and writer Steve Coogan would make frequent and regular appearances.
Later in his career, Whale worked for LBC radio and Play Radio UK, before presenting on BBC Radio Berkshire, BBC Three Counties Radio, and BBC WM, as well as doing occasional stints on BBC Radio Kent.
In 2016, he entered the Celebrity Big Brother house and finished in ninth place, later making the move to talkRadio. He was briefly suspended by the station after appearing to laugh when an interviewee described how she had been sexually assaulted.
Whale had announced in spring 2024 that he didn't expect to live much longer, admitting that he had already expected to die before receiving his MBE.
The host was awarded the MBE after being a popular voice on radio and TV since the 1970s, starting his career at the age of just 22.
Speaking after the ceremony, which saw him recognised for services to broadcasting, he told the PA news agency: 'I didn't think I'd be here to receive this.
'But who knows? I've been terminally ill now for nearly four years. 25 years ago, I had the original cancer. So I might make the end of this year; I might not. I might be around next year.'
He continued, remaining defiant: 'I think you've got to be positive. I know it's getting a bit worse than it was. You just have to go with the flow, really. You have to do that to get through it.
'1 in 2 of us is going to go on this journey until they find a cure. They will find a cure.'
At the time, he also gave fans hope that he might live even longer, saying he was initially told he had a year to live in 2020.
'But you have to make the most of it,' he added. 'When you're my age—and I've had a good life—you say maybe you have another year left. Four years ago, we thought we had months.'
Whale had revealed in 2022 that his treatment was no longer working and that he had stopped taking steroids, which made him 'look like a balloon'.
Just before Christmas that year, he said his blood transfusions weren't 'doing the trick' anymore and that he had lungs 'full of blood clots' as he shared pictures from hospital at the time. More Trending
Whale recorded his last-ever interview mid-July this year, after which colleagues declared him a 'legend' and a 'warrior to the end'.
His interview took place with Reform leader Nigel Farage, who spoke in a garden setting.
Affectionately known as 'Whaley,' the broadcaster's final interview aimed to celebrate his life and career.
Whale's ex-wife, Melinda Maxted, also died from lung cancer in 2018. He is now survived by Nadine Talbot-Brown, whom he wed in 2021, and two sons from his first marriage, James and Peter.

I quit watching EastEnders but Zoe Slater's return will bring me back

When I rage-quit watching EastEnders in 2017, I really couldn't imagine a world where I'd be lured back. And then came the news two months ago that Michelle Ryan is returning as Zoe Slater. Lo and behold, it has me ready to recommit to the legendary British soap. EastEnders always felt like the pedigree of soaps. At its best, the acting and writing were unrivalled, and it had the ability to capture the entire nation. I'll never forget the excitement around 'Who Shot Phil?' I was knee-deep in EastEnders by then, but even people who didn't watch the show remember the moment when almost 20 million viewers discovered the culprit was Lisa. The only other event that could unite the nation like that was a World Cup final and we hadn't seen one of those in more than 30 years. Natalie Cassidy, Steve McFadden, Pam St. Clement, Lucy Benjamin, and Barbara Windsor were just some of the top-tier actors around this time, and they truly were some of the best of British TV. And then came a new family: The Slaters. Right at the height of the demonisation of 'chavs' and the end of the Spice Girls era, a new clan arrived in Albert Square and redefined 'girl power'. Kat, Lynne, Little Mo, and — who we believed at the time was their youngest sister — Zoe, were a tour de force unlike anything seen on any soap before. Joined by Charlie and nan 'Big' Mo, they took absolutely no prisoners, instantly became central to all the drama, and I can't think of another family in any soap since that captivated audiences so immediately. I didn't just care about the Slaters from the get-go, I loved them. Especially Zoe and Kat. Almost a year after the Slater family's arrival, Kat and Zoe were at the centre of what was easily the biggest rug-pull I'd ever seen on EastEnders by that point – the moment Zoe screeched, 'You ain't my muvva!' only for Kat to howl back, 'Yes I am!' I can't think of a scene with such extraordinary levels of absolutely sensational high camp. They don't get the credit they deserve, but there are few performances as remarkable as Jessie Wallace and Michelle Ryan's as Kat and Zoe. Their chemistry was dynamite, their shared history was painful, and the betrayal of that shock felt so real and so rich. This is especially impressive considering that, relative to other characters on EastEnders, we'd only just really got to know them. They were all survivors in their own right, and as a young gay kid, nothing got me more excited than the power of a strong woman. Zoe, especially. She was young, fun, and making mistakes I couldn't wait to make myself, with my teenage years just around the corner. Ryan was also an incredible talent — which is why Hollywood soon beckoned and she was cast as the lead in a reboot of Bionic Woman, leaving the Square in 2005. I was devastated but still I persisted. Stacey Slater has recently arrived and like every Slater before her came into her own almost immediately. Lacey Turner, for me, is the greatest EastEnders actor there's ever been and has been tried, tested and pushed to her limit more than any other. From her affair with Max to watching Bradley fall from the Queen Vic and caring for her mum Jean who was defined by he bipolar diagnosis for years, Stacey was a true Walford heroine who filled the void. But my interest waned and one storyline, in particular, devastated me. The moment I knew I was done with the show came on New Year's Day 2017. It was the day Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell were killed off — mercilessly bumped off in the two most inexplicable deaths I'd ever seen on EastEnders. They died in a hotel swimming pool. Roxy was apparently so drunk she was incapable of swimming, and Ronnie's dress was seemingly the weight of a sinking ship, so she drowned with her. As I write this now, I'm still so unreasonably angry about it. That episode tipped me over the edge. In what felt like the blink of an eye, what was once my favourite 30 minutes of the day became something I began to dread. So I stopped watching. But then I got the news that Michelle Ryan would be coming back, and suddenly I felt able to forgive and forget – put the last eight years behind me. Everything about her return has been EastEnders gold. From Kat snapping at her son Tommy 'I'm your muvva' moments before the big reveal of Zoe, to the sheer shock of it. Zoe's gone off the rails, Stacey's kept her in hiding and dragged Alfie into another mess he can't afford. Zoe's talent is causing trouble; during her brief return earlier this summer she caused plenty of it. Lying, drinking and trying to fleece her own family, Ryan slipped back into Zoe's demons like she's barely been away. The second episode with Zoe hiding in the bedroom with her mum just feet away was agonising, perfectly setting up the incoming reunion and moment we've waited 20 years for. Zoe's got a secret, revealing she's done something 'so bad' her family will never forgive her. The possibilities are endless but it's going to be colossal. I can feel it. More Trending Just a few weeks ago, I couldn't have imagined watching EastEnders again. Now, I can't imagine missing a single second of Wallace and Ryan together on screen. This is the most exciting — and unlikely — reunion since Take That, and I am not going to miss a moment of it. It's been a long time since I truly invested in EastEnders. Thankfully, I still recognise most of the main cast, even if I have no idea what they've been up to for the best part of a decade. View More » Like Zoe, I've got a lot of catching up to do. But with the promise that Michelle Ryan is back for the foreseeable future, I'm ready to dive straight back in with full commitment. Do you have a story you'd like to share? MasterChef winner defends John Torode and admits 'I feel awful'

MasterChef winner defends John Torode and admits 'I feel awful' Thomasina Miers became the first winner of a new look MasterChef when it launched in 2005, but now she has spoken out on what she thinks of the recent allegation against John Torode John Torode has been axed from MasterChef (Image: BBC) Former MasterChef winner Thomasina Miers has said that she "feels awful" after John Torode sacked from his role on the BBC show. ‌ After the pair were chosen to co-host the rebooted MasterChef in 2005, John Torode and Gregg Wallace formed what quickly became one of the most iconic duos in British TV. ‌ But their partnership was torn apart in recent weeks after 45 complaints were upheld against Wallace, which included one for "unwelcome physical contact" and three involving a state of undress. Meanwhile, soon after Wallace's demise his co-host Torode saw one allegation of racism upheld against him, leading to his dismissal. ‌ Torode has passionately denied the allegation of racism and has expressed his shock and sadness. Thomasina Miers won MasterChef in 2005 (Image:for Pen) Thomasina shared a look back to her time on the show during a chat on the Spooning with Mark Wogan podcast. She disclosed what she thought about the news of Torode's upheld allegation: "I felt awful for John. I mean, and also the elegance of his response to it, how he conducted himself." ‌ She added: "I think, yeah, I was kind of gobsmacked by John (the news of the allegation being upheld), who was so caring and intent on the people under his watch, under his care." Thomasina was crowned winner of MasterChef in the first of the rebooted series of the show in 2005. A year after winning the competition, she co-founded her own restaurant chain, the popular Mexican-style street food brand Wahaca, which now has 14 sites in the UK. John Torode saw an allegation of racism upheld against him (Image: Dave) ‌ Thomasina is not the only celebrity to show their support for Torode following the racism allegation. Amanda Holden and McFly star Danny Jones liked the former MasterChef star's post on Instagram from July 14 where he confirmed that he was the individual who was alleged to have used "racial language". A BBC spokesperson released a statement saying: "John Torode has identified himself as having an upheld allegation of using racist language against him. "This allegation – which involves an extremely offensive racist term being used in the workplace – was investigated and substantiated by the independent investigation led by the law firm Lewis Silkin. John Torode denies the allegation. ‌ She was the first winner of the rebooted MasterChef in 2005 (Image: Getty Images for Freuds) "He has stated he has no recollection of the alleged incident and does not believe that it happened. He also says that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment. "The BBC takes this upheld finding extremely seriously. We will not tolerate racist language of any kind and, as we have already said, we told Banijay UK, the makers of MasterChef, that action must be taken. John Torode's contract on MasterChef will not be renewed." Article continues below The first three episodes of the latest series of MasterChef - featuring Torode and Wallace before they were axed - dropped on iPlayer yesterday morning (Wednesday, August 6). The episodes appear to have been edited to include fewer jokes between the pair and less chat between them and the amateur chefs than usual.

Terry's Chocolate is launching a ‘top secret flavour'

The Terry's Chocolate Orange is a British staple. While they're often reserved for stockings at Christmas, the treat is available all year round. And though many fans insist you 'can't beat' the original flavour, that hasn't stopped Terry's from trying. From mint chocolate balls to chocolate orange truffles and white chocolate treats, the chocolate brand has tested a range of new flavours over the years. And now it's teasing a 'top secret' new recipe – but fans are convinced they already know what it is. Terry's shared the news on its Instagram account with a picture of a golden envelope. 'Sealed, secret, and seriously delicious. Not long now…' the caption read. Naturally, chocolate lovers flooded the comments with guesses – the majority seemed to agree on one possibility. Pistachio. User @welliesandwaffles asked: 'It's going to be pistachio, isn't it?' While @ wrote: 'I feel like it's pistachio.' 'Don't tell me Pistachios,' @charlottejade_ added. Some were on board with the potential new flavour. User @amy_f_wills said that while the original chocolate orange 'cannot be beaten', the 'only other flavour worth doing is pistachio.' It's not a wild guess. Pistachio chocolate has been everywhere this year – largely thanks to the Dubai chocolate trend that exploded on TikTok. Dubai chocolate, which is filled with crispy knafeh, pistachio cream and tahini spread, was first launched by Dubai-based firm Fix Dessrt Chocolatier in 2021. But the sweet treat really took off after influencer Maria Vehera shared a TikTok video of herself trying it, racking up over 120 million views. Suddenly, everyone wanted a bite. The trend sparked a global demand and has even been blamed for contributing to a global pistachio shortage, as brands rushed to create their own pistachio-inspired treats. Lindt launched its own Dubai chocolate-style bar while Aldi launched pistachio creme jars, while plenty of other pistachio products filled supermarket aisles. Still, not everyone is thrilled with another pistachio product. 'As long as it's not based on Dubai chocolate. Sick of hearing of it now,' @polly_199131 wrote under Terry's Chocolate Instagram post. Others suggested the secret flavour could be Caramel, which some fans were quick to point out is already in stores. User @Uknewestfoods commented: 'This can not be the caramel Terry's, which is literally already out in shops? More Trending 'Is it caramel that is already out?', asked @woofidin. The flavour was spotted on the Snack News & Reviews Facebook page last week. It doesn't contain any orange flavour at all. The Caramel treat is only available at Co-op and doesn't seem to be available online yet. Fans said it was 'delicious'. View More » Metro contacted Terry's to see what the potential new flavour could be, but so far they've remained tight-lipped. Still, that isn't stopping fans from speculating in the comments.
