Woman loses almost RM500,000 to Macau scam
Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) police chief Supt Jay January Siowou said the 39-year-old woman received a phone call on Feb 17 from an individual claiming to be a police officer, who accused her of being involved in a criminal case.
'The individual claimed that the suspect needed to make payments to settle the investigation that is supposedly being carried out against her. The suspect also threatened her not to inform anyone of the matter.
'The woman then made 47 online cash transactions amounting to RM256,550 to 13 different bank accounts and 12 cash deposits amounting to RM233,000 to four different bank accounts via the cash deposit machine, with the amount transferred totalling RM489,550,' he said in a statement today.
He said the victim only realised she had been duped after confiding in her younger brother and lodged a report at the Sungai Bakap Police Station yesterday, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Siblings drown in unfenced construction pond site in Ipoh
IPOH: Two siblings were found drowned in a water retention pond located within an unfenced construction site in Lebuh Perindustrian Sin Yong Seng, Taman Chemor Ria, here yesterday. "A post-mortem conducted at HRPB's forensic unit confirmed that the cause of death was drowning," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 33 of the Child Act 2001, which pertains to child negligence and is punishable by a fine of up to RM20,000, a jail term of up to five years, or both. He advised the public to always prioritise children's safety, especially when near high-risk areas such as rivers, ponds, mining pools, or construction sites. "Developers and contractors are also reminded to comply with safety regulations, including installing fencing and warning signs at construction sites to prevent unwanted incidents. "Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact the investigating officer, Inspector P. Munesuwari, at 016-5921325, or reach out to any nearby police station," he said.

Mistaken for animal: Octogenarian fined RM6,000 over fatal shooting in Serian

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali convicted Mangkok Mawa on his own guilty plea to a charge of causing death by negligence, framed under Section 304A of the Penal Code; and a charge of possessing a firearm without a permit, framed under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960. For the first charge under Section 304A, the accused was fined RM4,000 in default five months' jail, while for the second charge under Section 8(a), he was fined RM2,000 in default three months' imprisonment. He committed the offence at around 10am on July 23 at Kampung Engkeroh Mawang in Tebakang, Serian. Based on the facts of the case, police received a report from the public about a 52-year-old woman who had been shot dead in the village, and arrested Mangkok at about 2.40pm the same day. Seized from him were a shotgun, one spent cartridge, and a box containing nine live cartridges. Investigations revealed the accused was hunting squirrels in an orchard behind his house when he opened fire after mistaking the victim for an animal moving in the bushes. Civil servant denies corruption charge
LABUAN (Aug 21): A 44-year-old civil servant pleaded not guilty at the Labuan Special Corruption Court today to a charge of accepting a valuable item from a contractor linked to a fisheries-related project, four years ago. Anisah Embok was accused of receiving an ASUS A516E-AE121T notebook computer from a contractor involved in the supply of equipment for the Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) project under the MyKomuniti Tuna Fisheries initiative, on July 29, 2021. She was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries imprisonment for up to two years, a fine, or both, upon conviction. Judge Jason Juga granted her bail of RM10,000 with one surety and ordered her to report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) once every two months.
