Polestar Australia boss calls for overhaul of ute tax incentives
Scott Maynard, managing director of Polestar in Australia, says lucrative tax concessions for high-riding utes have gone too far, resulting in taxpayers subsidising cars that are harmful to the environment.

Large four-wheel-drive utes can be exempt from luxury car tax and fringe benefits tax that apply to other vehicles.
Maynard says the fringe benefits tax concession 'continues to disproportionately serve the sale of dual cab utes and not what I would consider to be a far more progressive style of transportation, which is electric vehicles'.
'Consider that three of the top five selling cars in Australia for the entire first half [of the year] were dual cab utes and their variants,' he said.
'We've now got more than one and a half times the dual cab ute to tradie ratio, which doesn't make sense.
Polestar Australia's Scott Maynard says the focus of the tax break system for cars is misguided.
'If you consider some of the positioning of some of those particular vehicles, which are clearly no longer tools of trade, I don't think it's a difficult jump to make to put that on the fact that they've enjoyed tax let off since 2000.
'Wouldn't it be great to see benefits like that afforded to vehicles that are now cheaper to own um easier to live with and better for the environment?'
Rod Campbell, research director at The Australia Institute, made headlines in 2024 when pointing out the 'considerable costs on society' of subsidising large utes such as the RAM 1500 and Ford F-150.

'The Australian public is subsidising big, dumb utes by hundreds of millions of dollars each year,' he said.
'These vehicles are damaging roads, reducing safety and increasing emissions, yet they are given a massive tax break.
'Removing the luxury car tax exemption will not affect most ute drivers, particularly tradies.
'Instead it targets those buying large luxury vehicles, worth sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars, for personal use.
'Economics 101 says that governments should tax things they want less of, and subsidise things they want more of, and it is stunning that the Australian Government seems to want more big, dumb utes.'
Maynard's views differ from peers at the top of the car industry.
Polestar has effectively split from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, a collective that lobbies on behalf of member companies such as Toyota, Ford and Mitsubishi – brands that rely heavily on the sales of utes such as the HiLux, Ranger and Triton.
But Polestar doesn't have a ute.

It doesn't have any cars that require petrol or diesel fuel – every Polestar sold in Australia is a pure electric vehicle.
Maynard said the brand's all-in stance on electric vehicles 'does open a window for us' as rival brands water down their commitment to EVs.
The brand has recorded an uptick in interest from customers who were considering plug-in electric vehicles before a tax break expired on April 1, pushing them toward EVs.
'Anecdotally, I feel like I'm talking to more and more customers that say now that's done,' he said.
'At a function last night, I spoke to three people at a table that said, 'you know, we were squaring up for a PHEV [but] we will probably just go full electric now'.
'And I know that there was a lot of people that were trying to get their PHEV deals secured before that FBT incentive [expired].'

'It can add significant weight, prevent airflow, and act as an insulator, causing components to heat up much quicker. It's highly corrosive and can clog up fans and alternators, preventing them from running correctly.' Ford used a specially designed track at its You Yangs Proving Ground in Victoria, a 'purpose-built mud hell' with deep ruts, bog holes, and long, open sections of thick, sticky clay. It then sent the Ranger Super Duty through it day after day, allowing the mud to build up each time instead of hosing it off. Ford weighed the prototype vehicle before and after testing to confirm just how much mud it packed on. The end result? More than 600kg of packed-on mud or, as Ford notes, the equivalent of a full-grown Brahman steer. Engineers then continued to drive the vehicle to see how it coped with having mud smothering key components. 'Our mud-pack testing is a key part of our 'Built Ford Tough' validation,' said Mr Hugo. 'So, for the Ranger Super Duty, we knew we had to turn it up to 11. We packed more mud onto this vehicle during development than we ever have before.' Ford says this test simulated the type of extreme conditions a customer might face, for example on a remote mine site or during recreational off-roading. The Ranger Super Duty will be priced from $82,990 before on-road costs – before a tray is fitted – when it goes on sale in local showrooms in early 2026. It offers the highest towing and payload capabilities of any Ranger offered to date and gives Ford a uniquely capable option against key rivals including the Toyota HiLux and newcomers like the Kia Tasman and BYD Shark 6. The Super Duty lineup will use the 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine already offered in other model grades, making 154kW of power at 3250rpm and 600Nm of torque at 1750rpm – the same torque figure, but down 30kW in power. Ford announced pricing in June for the Single Cab-Chassis, Super Cab-Chassis and Double Cab-Chassis body styles, which will be the first Super Duty models on sale. The company has confirmed the Ranger Super Duty Pickup and XLT Super Duty will follow, joining the initial cab/chassis models in Ford Australia showrooms in late 2026. The cab/chassis pricing doesn't include a tray, with Ford offering three different types: a galvanised steel tray, body colour steel tray or a matte black steel tray. Depending on the tray type and variant, you're looking at an extra $5966 to $9376 including fitment. That brings the Super Duty Double Cab-Chassis price to $98,156 before on-road costs with the most expensive tray added. It comes with 295mm ground clearance and a payload of up to 1825kg. All three Super Duty variants have a 1710mm track width – matching that of the Ranger Raptor, which is 90mm wider than the rest of the Ranger lineup – and a braked towing capacity of 4500kg. They also have a front axle load rating of 1900kg and a rear axle load rating of 2800kg – compared to a best of 1450kg front and 1959kg rear on other model grades including the Ranger XLT dual-cab. Ford says it has upgraded the cooling system for the Super Duty to improve performance and reliability with its increased towing as well as its higher 4500kg gross vehicle mass (GVM) and 8000kg gross combined mass (GCM). Abetz in, Barnett out as treasurer in Tasmanian Liberals cabinet shuffle
Former federal MPs Bridget Archer and Gavin Pearce are new faces in Premier Jeremy Rockliff's latest cabinet, Roger Jaensch has been dumped, and Deputy Premier Guy Barnett moved on as treasurer. Ms Archer has been appointed to the demanding health portfolio, replacing Jacquie Petrusma, who has stepped down to focus on her recovery from a serious hamstring injury she suffered in June. Mr Pearce will be the minister for primary industries and water, and veterans affairs, replacing former children and youth minister Roger Jaensch. Mr Barnett has been moved from the treasury portfolio following an immense backlash over this year's state budget, which projected that net debt would grow to almost $11 billion in the 2028-29 financial year. Eric Abetz will take on the portfolio. Mr Rockliff will have no ministerial responsibilities in his new-look cabinet after he was re-commissioned by Governor Barbara Baker on Wednesday, saying he wanted to concentrate on his duties as premier. "It's important that with the new make-up of parliament that I'm able to dedicate the time to working across all areas of parliament and the crossbench, so I can have greater opportunity and investment of time in collaboration and listening and learning from all members of parliament," he said. Mr Rockliff said Ms Archer, who has also been appointed to the new ageing portfolio and as minister for Aboriginal affairs, would be a great addition to his cabinet. Mr Rockliff said Mr Barnett had not been dumped as treasurer, but was instead taking on "increased responsibility" by also adding the justice and small business portfolios. "There was a range of areas of responsibility, and I want to ensure that each member of parliament has the right workload balance to be able to support them in making key decisions," he said. Education Minister Jo Palmer will also become the children and youth minister, and be responsible for the closure of the Ashley Youth Detention Centre. Mr Abetz will remain responsible for the government's proposed AFL stadium, in a renamed role as minister for Macquarie Point urban renewal. Mr Rockliff said he was confident his new cabinet would remain in place for the next four years, despite his government being expected to face a no-confidence motion as soon as parliament resumes on August 19. Labor Leader Dean Winter, who met with all five Independent MPs on Thursday as he continued his bid to form a minority government, has confirmed his party or a crossbench MP will move a no-confidence motion. The premier said Mr Winter had "had learnt nothing" from last month's state election, where Labor suffered a 3.1 per cent statewide swing against it. "What Tasmanians want is a stable parliament, a government that works across the parliament in the best interests of Tasmanians and a government that can get on with the job of delivering key areas of our agenda, but also key areas of passions for other MPs as well," he said. Ms Archer, who topped the poll in her seat of Bass after being defeated at this year's federal election, said she looked forward to taking on the challenge of the health portfolio. She said the government had made great strides in reducing the elective surgery waiting list under Ms Petrusma's leadership, and hoped to "continue the momentum". "I very much look forward to being able to work collaboratively with the parliament and across stakeholders in our community in what is, I think, one of our most important areas of responsibility in northern Tasmania and right across Tasmania," she said. Mr Rockliff said he had great admiration for Ms Petrusma, and "her diligence over the course of the last 15 or 16 months as she has dedicated her time to the health system".
