Migrant workers who rescued driver from Singapore's Tanjong Katong sinkhole invited to Istana open house
According to CNA, the President's Office said it had invited the workers, along with other guests, to the Istana open house this Sunday.
The workers are site foreman Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah, 47, his colleagues Velmurugan Muthusamy, 27; Poomalai Saravanan, 28; Ganesan Veerasekar, 32; Bose Ajithkumar, 26; Narayanasamy Mayakrishnan, 25; and Sathapillai Rajendran, 56.
'There will be opportunities for interaction between the guests — including the migrant workers — and the president during the Istana open house,' the President's Office said.
The incident occurred last Saturday when a sinkhole opened up near an active PUB construction site, where workers were building a 16-metre-deep shaft to connect three sewer lines.
According to the national water agency, a concrete component in the shaft failed around 5.50pm, causing a nearby section of road to collapse and a car to fall in.
Subbiah and his team quickly jumped into action, using a rope to pull the woman to safety within minutes.
Their swift response has drawn widespread praise, including from President Tharman.
'Bravo! Thanks to the migrant workers led by foreman Pitchai Udaiyappan Subbiah. They moved quickly and with courage,' he said in a Facebook post.
On the same evening, all seven men were awarded a Friends of ACE appreciation coin by Minister of State for Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash.
The token — named after the Ministry of Manpower's Assurance, Care and Engagement (ACE) Group — is given to migrant workers who show public-spiritedness, courage or initiative during emergencies.
While some on social media questioned whether the coin alone was sufficient recognition, the ministry said it welcomed public feedback and was encouraged by calls for more ways to honour the workers.
Meanwhile, migrant worker charity ItsRainingRaincoats said on Wednesday it had reached its donation campaign target of S$70,000 (RM230,000) for the seven men.
The campaign raised S$72,241 from 1,639 donors.
The funds will be divided among the workers and transferred to their bank accounts.

'It's a very, very positive step that shows Malaysia's recognition that US technology remains cutting-edge, and that when it comes to nuclear, trying to have reliable partners who have a commitment to safety is really key. 'This is a very significant step. We think that Malaysia is a good partner, and there we will need to negotiate. It will need to be ratified,' Kagan told Bernama in an exclusive interview recently. A 123 Agreement, named after Section 123 of the US Atomic Energy Act, is an essential legal framework required by the US before any transfer of nuclear materials, technology or equipment for peaceful purposes can take place. The agreement must go through negotiation and ratification, to ensure adherence to international non-proliferation and safety standards. On whether a timeline has been outlined to conclude the agreement, Kagan said the next steps would depend entirely on Malaysia's internal energy planning. 'Malaysia is going to need to make its decisions about how quickly it wants to go,' he added. 'We believe that it's very much in the interest of both countries to have a 123 Agreement. We look forward to working with Malaysia, but ultimately, this will be done at Malaysia's pace and in response to Malaysia's decisions about what it wants for its energy mix,' he said. — Bernama

Sabah Umno's strategy may not change election outcome, analyst claims
Sabah BN risks being sidelined in post-election negotiations if it seeks to contest the upcoming state polls on its own, a political analyst has claimed. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A political analyst has claimed that the outcome of Sabah's 17th state election does not depend on whether Sabah Barisan Nasional-Umno continues its alliance with Pakatan Harapan or contests independently. Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said this was because BN lynchpin Umno and PH hold few, if any, overlapping seats in Sabah — making direct electoral clashes unlikely. 'The cold, harsh fact is that most parties will go solo, without any overlapping wherever possible. So this decision is no better or worse than if BN teams up with some other parties. 'BN and PH have few overlapping seats as the latter focuses mostly on urban and suburban seats while Umno focuses mainly on rural seats. So, it makes little difference if they team up or not,' he told FMT. Separately, Universiti Malaysia Sabah's Bilcher Bala warned Sabah Umno that its grassroots support has weakened considerably since the 2020 state election, and that contesting alone could be a highly risky strategy. Bilcher said going up against PH and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) would only benefit the likes of Warisan or Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM), putting Umno at risk of losing seats it currently controls. 'BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has already stressed that no single party is expected to win a simple majority in the state election. Therefore, alliances are key to forming the state government. However, Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin brushed off the remark, saying the state chapter will not act hastily in pinning down its election strategy. Bilcher said Sabah Umno may have little choice except to maintain its pact with PH, especially since the central leadership favours that alliance. 'If Sabah BN leaves this pact, they risk losing central support and access to national machinery, allowing PH and GRS to dominate.' He added that Rosman's statement clearly contradicted Zahid's stand on electoral alliances, especially since the Umno president had claimed the party may find 'friends among enemies'. 'The Sabah Umno leader's actions may be seen as challenging the central leadership and could spark internal tensions, especially if it affects BN's chances at the polls,' Bilcher said. 'If Sabah Umno really wants to go solo, it must prove that it still has grassroots support through the addition of new members.'

Kedah Umno Youth slams ‘hypocritical' MIC leader as spat widens
Ties between the Umno and MIC chapters in Kedah have been strained after the latter passed a motion to work with PN in GE16. PETALING JAYA : A Kedah MIC leader has been branded a hypocrite by the state's Umno Youth after he criticised them for joining forces with DAP, as the rift between the two Barisan Nasional (BN) components widened. Kedah MIC chairman SK Suresh was reported to have said that Umno was in no position to talk about loyalty as it was now collaborating with DAP. Suresh also said that Umno was willing to throw the past away after joining forces with its once bitter rivals. He had said this in response to Kedah BN information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin who had yesterday remarked that the coalition would not beg for the support of those who had turned their backs on them. Shaiful also said that loyalty 'is not something to be toyed with, traded during elections and reclaimed in times of difficulty.' His comments came in the wake of a motion passed by Kedah MIC to work with Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the next general election (GE16). In a statement yesterday, Kedah Umno Youth chief Raqib Abu Hassan said Suresh was being a hypocrite, while the latter's response to Shaiful was 'shallow'. 'Taking a swipe at Kedah Umno for 'cosying up' with DAP is trite. 'The reality is that it is MIC that has lost its allies and influence in Kedah, not Umno.' Raqib also said that Kedah MIC should stop playing 'hero', adding that Kedah BN would not be cowed by such threats. He also went on to wish Kedah MIC all the best and sarcastically suggested that the Indian-based party no longer needed to be part of a coalition that once came to its rescue. The motion by Kedah MIC was raised at the party's state annual general meeting yesterday, which was also attended by its president SA Vigneswaran. Suresh, however, said that the motion would be brought to the central leadership for a final decision. The motion comes a week after Vigneswaran said MIC was prepared to engage in discussions with any political party to ensure its survival and better serve the Indian community. MIC's future has been under scrutiny after deputy president M Saravanan said the party's direction would be decided at its annual general meeting in October. In an interview with Utusan Malaysia last month, Saravanan said MIC felt like an 'unwanted guest' in the unity government with no posts in the government despite having senior political figures like himself as party leaders.
