BlackRock's Custom Glidepath to Power Great Gray Trust Company's New Target Date Retirement Solution with Access to Private Markets
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jun 26, 2025--
BlackRock has been selected by Great Gray Trust Company, LLC ('Great Gray') to provide a custom glidepath that strategically allocates across public and private markets for Great Gray's first target date retirement solution featuring private equity and private credit exposures. BlackRock's index equity, index fixed income, and private equity offerings have also been selected to underpin the solution. BlackRock believes solutions that incorporate private market allocations in a target date glidepath provide opportunities to generate value while managing risk.
Great Gray is a leading provider of trustee and administrative services to Collective Investment Trusts, managing over $210 billion (as of March 31, 2025). BlackRock is the largest defined contribution (DC) investment-only firm with approximately $1.7 trillion in DC assets under management (as of March 31, 2025), including the LifePath ® franchise which manages more than $500 billion on behalf of clients across active, index, and income implementations. BlackRock and Great Gray have had a commercial relationship since 2013 and are at the forefront of expanding access to innovative solutions for retirement professionals and their clients.
As part of the solution, Wilshire Advisors LLC, a leading provider of investment and advisory services, will oversee implementation of the strategy, including liquidity management.
'Blending public and private markets exposures requires a thoughtful approach to asset allocation and the ability to actively manage risk across the whole portfolio. That's especially true for defined contribution plans,' said Nick Nefouse, BlackRock Global Head of Retirement Solutions and Head of LifePath. 'Great Gray has a clear vision of what it wants to bring to the retirement industry and has been great to collaborate with to develop this innovative approach. Together, we are going to help more working Americans meet their retirement goals.'
Private assets are becoming an increasingly important driver of economic growth and source of return for many institutional and high-net worth investors. BlackRock is already seeing demand for exposure to private assets in DC plans. In a recent survey 1, 21% of retirement plan advisors said they plan to include private markets investments in the defined contribution plans that they manage.
'For too long, access to private markets has been limited to institutions, leaving many retirement savers behind as capital markets have evolved. Great Gray's mission is to drive innovation in the U.S. retirement market, and for us to be true to that mission, we needed to create something that allows Americans to capitalize on private markets growth,' said Rob Barnett, CEO of Great Gray Trust Company. 'By strategically allocating across public and private markets, BlackRock's glidepath, systems and people are helping modernize the traditional target date solution.'
There are multiple ways plan sponsors and their advisors can incorporate private markets into DC plans. BlackRock's retirement clients have a variety of needs and preferences, and the firm is creating solutions that deliver specific private market allocations as well as fully integrated, whole portfolio solutions. In a new research paper, entitled 'The power of private markets: Unlocking the benefits of private assets in defined contribution plans,' BlackRock outlines how incorporating purpose-built private market solutions into a target date solution can add 50 basis points in portfolio returns annually over the lifecycle of a target date solution. The outperformance associated with having private markets exposures compounded over 40 years can translate into approximately 15% more money for a retiree.
'BlackRock has been working with institutional investors and financial advisors to help them access private markets for years and we continue to evolve our platform in response to our clients' changing needs. Innovating ways to thoughtfully incorporate private markets exposures into defined contribution plans underscores our commitment to providing them with the choices necessary to meet their investment objectives,' said Jaime Magyera, Co-Head of BlackRock's U.S. Wealth Advisory business and BlackRock's Senior Retirement Sponsor. 'Private assets play an increasingly important role in the global economy and today's announcement builds on our ongoing efforts to give investors more ways to access the capital markets so that they can retire better and live better.'
BlackRock believes the portfolio of the future will comprise 50% public equities, 30% public fixed income, and 20% private markets. BlackRock has taken a number of steps to help clients navigate this evolving landscape, with an established track record of bringing public-private offerings to the wealth channel, including this year's launch of a first-of-its-kind public-private model portfolio.

This BlackRock ETF Could Soar 12,770%, According to Billionaire Michael Saylor
BlackRock introduced an incredibly popular ETF early in 2024 that now has over $70 billion in assets. The price of the asset this ETF owns could rise almost 12,800% in 20 years, according to billionaire Michael Saylor. 10 stocks we like better than iShares Bitcoin Trust › Michael Saylor, the tech entrepreneur who founded the enterprise software provider Strategy (formerly known as MicroStrategy), has a net worth estimated at $9.3 billion. In the past few years, his focus has shifted to Bitcoin, the world's most valuable cryptocurrency. Saylor's business is now accumulating huge amounts of the digital asset. Based on his view that Bitcoin could skyrocket to $13 million per unit by 2045, Saylor is also implying that this popular exchange-traded fund (ETF), sponsored by giant asset manager BlackRock, also has 12,770% upside from today's price. Here's what investors need to know if they are even remotely interested in boosting their portfolio returns. No one can deny that Bitcoin has been the best-performing asset over the past decade, a period that saw its price soar by 41,820%. Investors who missed the boat might want to heed Saylor's forecast. The billionaire believes that Bitcoin will reach $13 million in 20 years, using his base case. As of June 23, it's trading at $101,000, so Saylor's prediction implies a 129-fold gain. The crypto has a fixed supply of 21 million coins. Saylor believes this key feature will make the digital asset more widely held in the future. In theory, capital will flow from other asset classes -- like bonds, equities, and real estate -- into Bitcoin. The base case calls for 7% of global wealth to find its way to the digital token, strong demand that will drive the price higher. Investors must realize that while this kind of price target gets a lot of attention, since it shows an annualized return of 27.5%, it's important to understand that no one knows what the future will hold. This is especially true with something like Bitcoin, which is still a relatively new phenomenon in the world of finance. At the end of the day, what really matters is if you're bullish on Bitcoin or not. Michael Saylor is perhaps the biggest Bitcoin bull ever. In 2020, following the onset of the pandemic and the unprecedented levels of government stimulus, Saylor completely altered his company's blueprint, with the sole intention of buying and holding as much Bitcoin as possible. Strategy now owns 592,000 Bitcoins, making it the single biggest non-ETF holder in the world. In a seminal moment for the crypto industry, the Securities and Exchange Commission finally approved spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024. These products were a monster hit, but the BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust (NASDAQ: IBIT) quickly became the most successful. As of June 23, 2025, it had $71 billion in assets. This ETF owns Bitcoin. As a result, its price is meant to track the price movement of the crypto. However, it's crucial that investors know that by owning the ETF, they don't directly own the digital coin. That might not matter, given that the ETF provides accessibility and convenience in a regulatory-compliant way. Investors can buy the iShares Bitcoin Trust in their traditional brokerage accounts. Even better, there's no need to open a wallet or account specifically for cryptocurrencies. This draws capital from investors who want a seamless option. There is a cost, but it's low at an expense ratio of 0.25%. For institutional investors like hedge funds, pension funds, or sovereign wealth funds, this is a small price to pay for operating within their mandates. At least they now have access to a wildly successful investment opportunity. Should Bitcoin one day reach Saylor's $13 million price prediction by soaring 12,770% in 20 years, the iShares Bitcoin Trust should also register a similar gain. Scott Galloway reveals real Social Security problem
Republican lawmakers are preparing to advance President Trump's sweeping Big Beautiful Bill in the coming days, with the Senate expected to hold its first procedural vote as early as June 28. According to the latest report from the Congressional Budget Office, which considers variables such as interest rates, inflation, and projected economic performance, the estimated cost is $2.8 trillion. New York University professor and popular podcaster Scott Galloway says Democrats have criticized the bill but have failed to offer alternatives, which he believes is a missed opportunity. That being the case, Galloway has a few thoughts of his own on problems with the bill and some suggested solutions, including how to handle increasingly pressing problems with Social Security. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Despite earning $16 million annually, Galloway believes he shouldn't receive Social Security benefits in retirement. He argues that means-testing - evaluating financial need - should be used to determine eligibility. He points out that although he makes millions, he still pays only about $9,000 a year into Social Security, the same amount as someone earning $160,000 due to the payroll tax cap. Related: Jean Chatzky sends strong message on buying vs. leasing a car In Galloway's view, many Social Security recipients end up collecting two to three times what they contributed over their lifetimes. He suggests that high earners such as himself, while technically eligible, don't necessarily need or deserve Social Security benefits simply because they paid into the system. Galloway explains further views on Social Security and what the Big Beautiful Bill might have included given different leadership in Congress. Galloway lays out some key facts that he believes should be driving the conversation about what should be done to fix Social Security. "Since 1957 the share of Americans who are 65 and older has nearly doubled from 9% to 17%," Galloway wrote in his "No Mercy / No Malice" newsletter on June 27. "At $1.5 trillion dollars, Social Security is the largest expenditure in the federal budget. U.S. seniors are the wealthiest cohort in history and the recipients of the largest redistribution in history, he added." More on personal finance: Dave Ramsey offers urgent thoughts about MedicareJean Chatzky shares major statement on Social SecurityTony Robbins has blunt words on IRAs,401(k)s Galloway points out that Social Security, which currently provides benefits to around 69 million Americans, is facing a looming funding shortfall expected to hit within the next eight years. He attributes this financial strain to a combination of factors: The growing number of Americans entering retirement (a positive sign of longevity and economic success)Longer life expectancies that mean people collect benefits for more years (also positive from a human perspective)A troubling dip in workforce participation, which results in fewer workers paying into the system to support current retirees "If/when Social Security becomes insolvent, America's grandparents will likely put their retirement on their grandkids' credit cards," Galloway wrote. "The fix is straightforward, but politically fraught: Means-test benefits and raise the retirement age (exempting people in physically demanding professions)," he added. According to a CBO analysis, Galloway explained, an increase in full retirement age by two months per birth year until it reaches age 70 for Americans born in 1978 or later would decrease total federal outlays by $122 billion through 2032. Related: Dave Ramsey has blunt words on spending money to keep a dog alive Galloway explains his belief that phasing out benefits for those with more than $150,000 of non-Social Security income would save an estimated $600 billion to $700 billion over the course of a decade. "We now spend $5 on seniors for every $1 on children," Galloway wrote. "Enough already. Seniors who need Social Security should get it, but it shouldn't mean an upgrade from Carnival to Crystal Cruises for NaNa and PopPop." "At current rates, within a decade, we'll spend half our federal budget on programs for seniors," Galloway added. Galloway also explains his views on an issue he believes to be a tax on the youth. He argues that tax policies such as reduced rates on long-term capital gains and mortgage interest deductions disproportionately benefit older and wealthier Americans - essentially moving resources from younger, lower-income individuals to those already financially secure. He highlights the fact that asset ownership - stocks and real estate - is largely concentrated among the wealthy and older population, while younger and poorer Americans are more likely to rent and earn most of their income from wages. In his view, this creates an unfair dynamic where those with the least are indirectly subsidizing the wealth-building of those with the most. Galloway advocates eliminating both the preferential tax treatment for capital gains and the mortgage interest deduction, proposing that investment windfalls be taxed at the same rate as regular income. According to his estimates, doing so could generate an additional $117 billion in annual government revenue.
