Tyla unveils her musical evolution and teases 'Chanel' in exclusive 'Variety' cover story

Fresh off the release of her four-track mixtape 'We Wanna Party' and a whirlwind half-year of success, Tyla is showing no signs of slowing down.
The 23-year-old Grammy-winning artist graced the latest cover of 'Variety' as one of this year's 'Power of Young Hollywood' honourees, and, in her feature interview, she opened up about her next musical chapter.
According to 'Variety', Tyla is gearing up to drop a new Amapiano single titled 'Chanel' later this year, with her sophomore album expected to follow.
Previously, she celebrated the launch of her 'We Wanna Party' mixtape in London and Berlin ahead of its release and revealed songs that would be featured; 'Chanel' was one of them, but it ultimately did not make it to the mixtape.

She also shed light on the creation of her sophomore album, revealing that it was recorded across various cities, including Los Angeles and Barcelona.
The new body of work sees the South African-born star embracing a global perspective, experimenting with fresh sounds such as rap and reggaeton.
'I had more time to work on this album than I did the first, so I have a lot of songs,' she said.
'It feels really current, and this time, I'm living what I'm singing; it feels way more personal. Way more like me.'
The yet-to-be-titled second album is still in progress, with Tyla currently finalising the track list from a growing pool of hits.
In July, she gave fans a taste of her evolving sound with 'We Wanna Party', a mixtape that includes chart-soaring songs like 'Mr. Media', 'Dynamite' and 'Is It'.
Tyla told 'Variety' that she wanted to release music that reflected her present moment as an artist, something bold, high-impact and unapologetic.
'I wanted something loud, aggressive, and worthy of summer. 'Mr Media' had to come out before the album, I needed to express those thoughts first,' she said.
''We Wanna Party' is the bridge. When the album drops, it's going to be a completely different vibe than what people are expecting,' Tyla added.
This new creative era aligns with the recognition she is receiving beyond music as one of the magazine's 2025 'Power of Young Hollywood' honourees, alongside 'Stranger Things' actor Finn Wolfhard and 'The White Lotus' star Sam Nivola.
Tyla is being celebrated not just for her breakout success but for her growing influence across entertainment and pop culture.

The Afrikaans comedy, which Innes wrote and produced with his husband Nick Ahlers, is a labour of love. 'We just love the bush,' he told 'Independent Media Lifestyle' during an interview. 'We always go there with friends and family, and when you see 'Khaki Fever' taking off, we thought someone had to make a movie about that, and we were the ones who did it.' Innes added: 'I love a good comedy and I think that the world needs one right now. I love doing the heavier stuff, but I don't think that the world has the bandwidth to engage with too much trauma on the screen and just needs a good laugh on a Friday night.' 'Khaki Fever' centres around a group of quirky game rangers who set up a challenge to see who can have sex with the most tourists during a season. As they battle for the 'King of Khaki' title as well as the losers' collective tips from the season, the eccentric rangers will also have to outsmart the stern and rigid conservative lodge manager. As they get their salacious shenanigans underway, the group also face the prospect of being fired if they are caught fraternising with the guests. Drawing parallels between this movie and risqué Hollywood hits, Innes warned that this type of comedy could 'ruffle a few feathers.' 'I think that the people who enjoy this kind of humour are going to love it, so if you like 'The Hangover', 'Bridesmaids' and those types of movies, you will definitely love this one!' 'I am expecting a mixed reception when 'Khaki Fever' is released because I know that it might offend and not impress many of the most conservative viewers, and that's fine; they don't have to push play.' 'We are not here with the necessary intention of being controversial, but you do have a group of people, where if there is even one swear word, they are upset, so this movie is definitely not for them.' Meanwhile, Innes spoke of the challenges of casting for this kind of project. 'Finding the cast was tricky because a lot of local actors either don't do sex and nudity or don't enjoy this style of humour but we had an excellent casting director which was vital for this film.' 'We wanted to make sure that beyond the talent, that everyone was lekker because film-making is hard enough and it was a case of making sure that everyone who came to the party wanted to be at the party and we ended up creating a hub of people who got each other, who cared deeply for each other and who felt safe.' Innes was thrilled with 'Khaki Fever's' illustrious cast, which includes Saftas-nominated Christopher Jaftha alongside four 2025 Silwerskerm nominees Anja Taljaard, Trix Vivier, Liam Bosman and Ilse Klink. They are joined by other top Afrikaans stars such as Abel Knobel, Francois Jacobs, Sean Brebnor, Juanita de Villiers and Izette Blignaut, with special appearances from exquisite lions, giraffe, hyena and a runaway French bulldog named Chardonnay. 'The headline that people lean into is how risque it is and I don't think they are going to expect how warm they will feel at the end of this.' Overall, Innes hopes that 'Khaki Fever' will result in a few more offerings as it brings people from all walks of life together. 'I would really love for it to become one of the most viewed films on the streamer because we have an entire world for a second and third movie.' 'Scorpion Kings Live with Friends': all-day pre-show line-up announced at Loftus Versfeld
Anticipation builds for the Scorpion Kings concert, as a hint of a surprise African artist joining the line-up has been revealed. Image: Instagram Amapiano DJ duo Kabza de Small and DJ Maphorisa, who are also known as 'Scorpion Kings', are taking their highly anticipated concert to the next level. The 'Scorpion Kings Live with Friends' concert at Loftus Versfeld Stadium is set to run from afternoon until late into the night, with the addition of a pre-show stage showcasing some of South Africa's top performers. Fans will be treated to a day full of music starting from 2pm. The stadium will host sets from new-school artists to old-school artists. Acts such as DBN Gogo, Blxckie, 25K, Venom, Dlala Thukzin, Dinho, Christos, Vinny Da Vinci, Ba Bethe Gashoazen, and Banques will be giving fans an early taste of the country's musical range. Without revealing too much, Maphorisa hinted during an interview with Metro FM that there would be a surprise African artist, as they have collaborated with artists such as Nigerian superstars Wizkid and Burna Boy on their sophomore album. Their joint projects 'Scorpion Kings' and 'The Return of the Scorpion Kings' have not only taken over from the beginning but also helped propel the genre into international spaces. Known for fusing deep house, kwaito and jazz-inspired elements, they have built a sound that resonates far beyond South Africa's borders. 'This is not just an Amapiano show; it's a full-day experience. We're inviting fans to come early, soak in the vibes, and discover some of the freshest talents the country has to offer. 'The pre-show stage is all about celebrating music and making the day at Loftus unforgettable,' the Scorpion Kings said in a joint statement. The concert will mark their first large-scale stadium appearance together since 2022, and they are promising a high-production showcase with performances that will showcase more than one genre. The event is positioned as a celebration of collaboration and culture, with Kabza and Maphorisa closely involved in shaping everything from the music selection to the stage design.
