Sun's South Pole Photographed for the First Time

It took millions of years of being a species before humans took the first picture of our own Earth's southernmost point. Now, after less than a century in space, we've photographed the Sun's south pole.
The European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter's images aren't just groundbreaking. Learning more about our star's polar regions will help scientists understand and predict the Sun's effects on Earth.
For all human history, we have had only one angle on the Sun. The view was straight on. This is because the planets and their spacecraft rotate around the Sun on a flat circle called the ecliptic plane. Picture a CD playing. Or don't, I'm not your boss. At any rate, that flat-on angle prevented us from seeing either pole.
Escaping the ecliptic plane takes some doing, by which I mean a lot of very expensive rocket fuel. The Solar Orbiter used Venus's gravity to help pull it out of the usual equatorial orbit around the Sun. Every time it passes Venus, the planet's massive gravitational force shoves it out of the ecliptic plane. As it keeps looping around Venus, it gets pushed further and further out of alignment with that plane.
In January 2027, it should come around the Sun again at a more tilted angle, giving us an even better view.
The Sun's polar regions are pretty busy and chaotic places, it turns out. The ESA's press release about their findings goes so far as to call the Sun's magnetic field "a mess." The Sun's magnetic north and south poles switch places every 11 years, and it's a somewhat sloppy process.
During the transition period, called the "Solar Maximum," the magnetic field becomes a confused tangle, with no clear north or south pole. These magnetic upsets can cause a variety of startling and unpleasant effects on Earth, as seen in the history of solar superstorms. Look forward to power outages, satellite communication breakdowns, and particularly striking auroral displays until the sun settles down again and decides which end is which.
The images and readings from the Solar Orbiter give scientists a better idea of what's going on with the Sun's magnetic fields. This, in turn, will allow them to predict future solar activity more accurately. We aren't there yet, but this is a massive step toward building accurate computer models of solar magnetic behavior.

With its reddish-hued surface and surroundings, Mars has more than earned its colorful nickname. But how would the Red Planet appear under clear-blue Earth skies? Thanks to a NASA rover wandering the Martian iron oxide-infused surface, we now have a rough idea. Perseverance, one of two car-sized robotic rovers managed from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, has spent years exploring the Mars surface for signs that the planet was once habitable. Scientists believe the geology of Mars may hold valuable clues about past ancient life, and so the robotic vehicles, controlled remotely from Earth, have slowly navigated the rocky terrain to scoop up and collect intriguing samples. Along the way, Perseverance has made some extraordinary finds and captured some stunning vistas. The latest came earlier in May, when the rover captured what NASA described as "one of the sharpest panoramas of its mission so far." NASA released the mosaic in August, which, with color-enhancing technology, unveils the Martian landscape under a sky that is "deceptively" blue. What to know about NASA rover In July 2020, the Perseverance rover underwent a 200-day, 300-million-mile journey to reach Mars. After landing in February 2021 in the Jezero Crater, the robot, controlled remotely from Earth, spent nearly four years searching for and collecting more than two dozen rock samples – many of which are stored at the first-ever depot on another planet for future retrieval. The bottom of the Jezero Crater – believed to have formed 3.9 billion years ago from a massive impact – is considered to be among the most promising areas on Mars to search for evidence of ancient life. Perseverance's adventures have revealed some insights about the enigmatic Martian geology. Then in 2024, after years in the trenches of Jezero, Perseverance in December finally summitted the steep Martian crater to begin the next leg of its journey exploring the crater's rim. The rocks Perseverance has spent years collecting are of high interest to NASA and the European Space Agency, which hopes to one day soon retrieve the samples and bring them back to Earth before humans themselves venture to the Red Planet. NASA's Curiosity rover has also been exploring the Martian surface since 2012 in the Gale Crater. 'Enhanced-color' photo shows Mars under Earth-like skies The imaging team of NASA's Perseverance Mars rover took advantage of clear skies May 26 on the Red Planet to capture the recent panoramic image from the rover's Mastcam-Z camera. The final product, a 360-degree panorama of an area nicknamed "Falbreen," was stitched together from 96 separate images. One version shows Mars in all its natural rust-colored glory. The other mosaic is what NASA refers to as an "enhanced-color" version that had its color bands processed to "improve visual contrast and accentuate color differences," NASA said in a press release. The result? A Martian sky that more accurately resembles Earth's. "In this particular mosaic, we have enhanced the color contrast, which accentuates the differences in the terrain and sky," Jim Bell, Mastcam-Z's principal investigator at Arizona State University in Tempe, said in a statement. Several interesting features are visible in the image, including a rock that appears to lie on top of a sand ripple and hills as distant as 40 miles away. Tracks from the rover's journey to the location can also be seen toward the mosaic's right edge about 300 feet away. Martian 'helmet' and other recent rover discoveries The panoramic photo is just one of several recent sights and discoveries made possible by Perseverance in 2025. Earlier in August, NASA published a photo of a rock on the surface of Mars with a pointed peak and a flared "brim" resembling a centuries-old helmet. The image, taken Aug. 5 by the rover's Left Mastcam-Z camera, was chosen as the photo of the week for week 234 of its mission on Mars. Perseverance also made two incredible finds earlier in the year, the most recent of which occurred in March when the rover came across an oddly textured rock comprised of hundreds of millimeter-sized spheres. In January, Perseverance also witnessed a relatively uncommon sight of two dust devils swirling and spinning near one another. NASA released the video and imagery of the phenomenon in April. A 'planet parade' is now visible in the eastern sky before sunrise. Best seen at least an hour before sunrise, bright planets Venus and Jupiter — now beginning to draw away from each other after their close conjunction on Aug. 12 — dominate in the east while Saturn shines in the south. If you persevere until just before sunrise, you may see Mercury, which will get higher each morning this week. Though neither is visible to the naked eye, the distant outer planets Uranus and Neptune will also be in the sky. A spectacular 'planet parade' (also called an alignment) featuring six planets is visible during August 2025. getty This "planet parade," which started around Aug. 10 and will continue throughout the month, features Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune — though the latter two gas giant planets are too dim and distant to be seen with the naked eye. On the morning of Friday, Aug. 15, Venus and Jupiter, shining at magnitudes -3.9 and -1.8, respectively, will appear to be about two degrees from each other. Saturn will be easy to see in the southern night sky, shining alone. Mercury will become visible just above the eastern horizon about 45 minutes before sunrise. It will be farthest from the sun (and, therefore, highest in the sky) on Aug. 19 and remain visible until around Aug. 26. Mercury will appear below 10 degrees altitude, according to NASA, so observe from a location with an unobstructed eastern horizon. However, the planets' exact rise times depend on location. The next highlight of the 'planet parade' will come on Wednesday, Aug. 20, when a slender crescent moon will shine very close to a brilliant Venus. The following 'planet parade' will happen during October 2028, when five planets will be visible together, again before sunrise. Stellarium Although the peak of the Perseid meteor shower was earlier this week, this annual display of "shooting stars" underwhelmed this year because bright moonlight restricted the view of its 50-75 meteors per hour. However, by the evening of Friday, Aug. 15, the moon will have dimmed and moved into the post-midnight sky, creating a window of dark skies in the late evening when it may be possible to see the Perseid meteors. The 'planet parade' will this weekend be joined by a waning crescent moon, as well as more easily visible Mercury. On Monday, Aug. 18, a 26% crescent moon will be seen near Venus and Jupiter. On Tuesday, Aug. 19, Mercury will be at its highest in the morning sky as a 16%-lit crescent moon forms a curve with Venus and Jupiter. On Wednesday, Aug. 20, a 9%-lit crescent moon will be close to Venus, with Mercury below and Jupiter above. On Thursday, Aug. 21, a 4%-lit waning crescent moon will be beneath Jupiter and Venus, close to Mercury. Uranus and Neptune will also be in the sky but not visible. Best seen about an hour before sunrise, the highlight will be on Wednesday, Aug. 20, when a slender crescent moon will shine very close to a brilliant Venus. Saturn is high in the south, with Neptune just above. Uranus is high in the southeast, but like Neptune, requires a telescope to see. You don't need anything but your naked eyes to see this 'planet parade.' Joining the 'planet parade' all week is a waning crescent moon, which will get slimmer on each successive morning and pass close to the Venus, Jupiter and Mercury later in the week. Mars is the solitary planet left in the evening sky, so isn't part of this 'planet parade.' Sunday, August 17: A 'Planet Parade' Stellarium Here's what to expect this week as the 'planet parade' peaks: Sunday, Aug. 17: a 36%-lit crescent moon will shine high above Jupiter, Venus and a low-lying Mercury, with Saturn high in the south. Monday, Aug. 18: the crescent moon slims to 26%-lit, drawing nearer to the planets and glowing with Earthshine — sunlight reflected from Earth onto the lunar surface. Tuesday, Aug. 19: Mercury will be at its highest in the morning sky as the moon wanes to 16%-lit and forms a curve with Venus and Jupiter. Wednesday, Aug. 20: a now 9%-lit crescent moon will appear right next to Venus, with Mercury below and Jupiter above. Thursday, Aug. 21: although it will be tricky to see, a slender 4% moon will be positioned just above the horizon, near Jupiter and Venus, and close to Mercury and the Beehive Cluster of stars. Surprising Fact You'll hear the erroneous term 'planetary alignment' used to describe this event, along with advice about seeing six planets despite only four being visible to the naked eye. Stargazers prefer 'planet parade.' That's because the planets aren't aligned in space — they just appear that way from our vantage point on Earth. The planets are spread out, as they always are, along the ecliptic — the plane of the solar system. If you think of the solar system as a fried egg, with the sun at the center, the planets (including Earth) orbit in a circle around it. If planets were truly aligned, they would all appear as a single point of light as seen from Earth. Alignment in astronomy typically refers to syzygy, such as an eclipse, which does not apply here. Though these planets appear close in the sky, they're separated by staggering distances. Venus is around 118 million miles (190 million kilometers) from Earth this week, while Jupiter is almost five times farther at 548 million miles (882 million kilometers), with distant Saturn 888 million miles (1,430 million kilometers). Mercury, the closest, is about 80 million miles (128 million kilometers) away. A 'planet parade' is purely a line-of-sight phenomenon. However, it will be worth taking a look early on Aug. 31, when Venus will meet the Beehive Cluster in the early morning twilight. The next sky highlight — particularly for those with a backyard telescope — is Saturn at opposition on Sept. 21, 2025. With Earth between Saturn and the sun, the ringed planet will appear at its largest, brightest, and best in 2025, visible from dusk through dawn.
