Ricky Williams slams Texas lawmakers in explosive lawsuit, claiming the hemp THC ban defies federal law and endangers the rights of millions

Ricky Williams has always been more than just a football player. After a career marked by big runs and bold choices, the former Dolphins star is stepping into a different kind of spotlight—this time as a defender of cannabis rights.

In June 2025, Williams joined a federal lawsuit aimed at stopping a proposed Texas law that would ban hemp-derived THC products like Delta-8. 'Texas is attempting to outlaw these items against the will of hundreds of thousands of voters,' the legal complaint states. Now, Williams is bringing his voice—and his influence—to a battle that could change everything.
Ricky Williams warns Texas hemp THC ban could devastate the state's cannabis economy, risking billions in revenue and hundreds of small businesses
It all started when Texas lawmakers introduced a bill that would classify many hemp-based THC products as Schedule I substances—putting them in the same category as heroin and LSD.
If passed, the law would force shops across the state to pull popular items like gummies, vapes, and oils off the shelves.
That didn't sit right with Williams. So he teamed up with the Cannabis Freedom Alliance and signed onto a lawsuit challenging the proposed ban. Filed in Texas and cited in a report by ProFootballTalk, the suit argues that the state can't just override federal law. Specifically, it points to the 2018 Farm Bill, which legalized hemp-derived cannabinoids nationwide.
The suit also warns that Texas is threatening to undo years of work by businesses and farmers who've built a thriving industry under the protections of that law. And for Williams, this fight is personal.
Ricky Williams blasts Texas for ignoring science and silencing choice, calling the hemp THC ban a reckless move that punishes athletes seeking natural recovery
Speaking at a wellness event in Austin, Williams didn't hold back. 'Cannabis allowed me to extend my athletic career and recover without prescription drugs,' he said.
Since retiring from the NFL in 2011, Ricky Williams has leaned into a lifestyle built around healing—teaching yoga, practicing meditation, and advocating for holistic wellness.

To him, cannabis isn't just a talking point. It's a tool that helped him cope with pain, both physical and emotional.
Now he's using his platform to push back. Through social media, interviews, and public appearances, Williams has urged Texans to stand up for their rights. 'This ban doesn't just affect me—it affects small businesses, farmers, and consumers. Communities,' he said during a recent livestream.
Why Ricky Williams' fight against Texas' cannabis ban could set a national precedent
Texas lawmakers say they're concerned about the potency of products like Delta-8 and how they're marketed to younger audiences.
But critics argue that strict regulation—not a flat-out ban—is the real solution. Other states, like Idaho and Wyoming, have already tossed out similar laws in court.
This lawsuit could be the next to set a precedent. Legal experts say the outcome might not just shape policy in Texas—it could influence what happens nationwide. If the courts side with Williams and his legal team, hemp-derived THC products would remain protected.
But if the state wins? It could be the first domino in a wave of bans.
Ricky Williams may be done running on the field, but he's not done running toward what he believes in. With this lawsuit, he's putting his name—and his legacy—on the line for something bigger than football. Whether or not the courts agree with him, one thing's clear: Williams isn't afraid to challenge the system. Not when he thinks people's rights are on the line.

Chop Robinson injury update: Dolphins star shares 5-word message for fans amid practice scare

Chop Robinson seems to be up and ok. The Miami Dolphins edge rusher was carted off during Wednesday's joint practice with the Detroit Lions. According to the Palm Beach Post, the 22-year-old was attended by defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and fellow edge rusher Jaelan Phillips before the cart arrived. The rookie was hurt when he forced a fumble by Lions running back David Montgomery. Miami Dolphins linebacker Chop Robinson (44) does drills during practice(AP) As fans were concerned about Robinson's injury, the rookie posted a positive update on social media. 'I'm good yall (sic) nothing serious," he said on his Instagram story. The Dolphins have faced several injury scares leading up to the 2025 season. Last year, Bradley Chubb spent all of his time on the sidelines as he recovered from a knee injury sustained in December 2023. Jaelan Phillips endured a difficult stretch of injuries, first tearing his ACL in Week 4, then suffering a torn Achilles just two months later. Star wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are also among the players who were sidelined because of injuries. The two missed the first preseason game, and their status for Week 2 remains unclear. Dolphins placed Alexander Mattison on injured reserve on Monday after the running back suffered a season-ending neck injury vs the Chicago Bears. The veteran left Sunday's game with a neck injury after being tackled on a 21-yard pass play and landing awkwardly on his head in the fourth quarter. Coach Mike McDaniel said afterward that Mattison had some soreness in his neck and shoulder. First-round pick Chop Robinson, taken 21st overall in last year's NFL Draft, had a quiet start to his rookie campaign but finished with a flourish. The Penn State edge rusher notched six sacks over Miami's final 10 games, earning enough attention to place fifth in the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.

US Open: Venus Williams continues her comeback, receives singles main draw wildcard to feature at the 2025 edition

Two-time U.S. Open singles champion Venus Williams has received a wildcard entry into this year's tournament, organisers said on Wednesday, as the 45-year-old American continues her age-defying return to the court. She last played in the U.S. Open singles main draw in 2023, losing in the first round to Belgian Greet Minnen. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion had also received a wild-card entry with Reilly Opelka to play mixed doubles beginning Aug. 19. Williams has won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles with her sister Serena and another two in mixed doubles. Along with Williams, fellow Americans Clervie Ngounoue, Julieta Pareja, Caty McNally, Valerie Glozman and Alyssa Ahn are also handed singles main draw wild cards. On the men's side, plenty of American names have been handed wildcards. Brandon Holt, Nishesh Basavareddy, Tristan Boyer, Emilio Nava, Stefan Dostanic and Darwin Blanch are the home players to get entry into the main draw, along with France's Valentin Royer and Australian Tristan Schoolkate. The legendary elder Williams' sister became the oldest player to win a WTA singles match since 2004 when she beat Peyton Stearns at last month's Washington Open after a 16-month absence from competitive tennis. She later lost to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the Cincinnati Open. 'Just coming back, not everything's going to be perfect,' Williams had said then. 'From DC, I took a lot of things physically. I played four matches in four days. So in that last week, I really worked on the physical side. And, so after this match, I felt great and that's a plus.' The 51st-ranked Bouzas Maneiro, who wasn't born when Williams won her first four Grand Slam titles, advanced to her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal match last week in Montreal. It was their first meeting. 'She's a legend,' Bouzas Maneiro said. 'This was a privilege. I tried to do my best on court and enjoy every moment. It's an honor to play against her. She's an inspiration for young players.' With the crowd on her side, Williams pushed the 22-year-old Spaniard but struggled with her service game. 'She played super well,' Williams, who is one year removed from uterine surgery. 'She's got a great future ahead of her, clearly. I was just trying to figure things out as quickly as I could and I just ran out of time. Walking into this match, I felt good.' Williams was making her 11th appearance at the Cincinnati Open, where she reached the semifinals in 2012 and quarterfinals in 2019. She has spent 11 weeks ranked No. 1. 'I had so much fun out there,' Williams said. 'There were moments where I had a lot of chances and there were moments where I was working through the kinks. But there was never a moment where I didn't go for it.' Other women's singles wildcards included France's Caroline Garcia, in what will likely be the 2022 semi-finalist's last appearance at Flushing Meadows. The 2022 WTA Finals winner announced plans to retire from the sport earlier this year. The prize money at 2025 US Open will rise to nearly $85 million across all competitions this year, including a record $5 million each to the women's and men's singles champions, and total player compensation (including costs earmarked for hotel and food and not associated with performance) is $90 million, jumping 20%.
