Former Hall of Fame trainer takes aim at integrity officials in fight to resume training career
Former Hall of Fame greyhound trainer and convicted live baiter Ron Ball issued a stinging broadside to Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) officials in a last-ditch attempt to return to the industry this week.
Ball, who prepared the great Flying Amy during his six-decade training career, fronted the Queensland Racing Appeals Panel on Thursday in a bid to have a ten-year disqualification overturned.
83-year-old Ball was handed a life-ban for live baiting in 2015 before the penalty was sensationally slashed to 10-years on appeal, opening the door for a potential 2025 return to the training fold.

But in the lead up to the decade long ban expiring last month, QRIC officials disqualified Ball for a further 10-years, after he was found to be on the property and handling greyhounds of his partner and then licenced person Serena Lawrance back in October, 2022.
'They call themselves QRIC but it should just be QRC because the I stands for integrity and they don't have any,' Ball blasted at Thursday's appeal hearing.
'I served my 10 year punishment and when I go to make inquiries about reapplying for my licence, a matter from 2022 gets raised and dealt with without any communication with me at all.
'It just suits a narrative to keep me out of the industry. I believe I'm being discriminated and victimised against, it's unjust and excessive.'
Ball went on to raise uncontested evidence from an internal QRIC review in 2022 after his partner Serena Lawrance's initial 18-month disqualification for allowing Ball onto her property was extended to 30 months.
'In that review, the body cameras worn by the QRIC inspectors were provided where they said words to the effect of 'she's not as fat as you said she was' as Serena was going to open the gate for them,' Ball said.
When Panel Chair Kerry O'Brien quizzed Ball on the relevance of that to this appeal, Ball said that 'it spoke to the way they've been treated.'
In response to Ball's representations, QRIC's legal representatives argued that stewards were well within their rights to impose the further penalty under Greyhounds Australasia (GA) Rule 179.
The rule allows for the recommencement of a penalty if a person is found to have breached the rules while disqualified.
'Mr Ball failed to comply with the conditions of his warning off period,' QRIC's legal team said.
'If Mr Ball had welfare concerns about the greyhounds he should have raised those concerns with QRIC in the first instance.
'But instead Mr Ball chose to breach GA rule 178 which serves as a serious regulatory tool to safeguard the industry.
'He has demonstrated a pattern of non-compliance with the rules.'
In return, Judge O'Brien said he was 'troubled' by the way in which the penalty had been handed down.
'Generally there would be a charge, submissions and the chance to respond before reaching a conclusion,' Judge O'Brien said.
'I accept there must be a consequence but there has been no charge issued in respect to rule 179 and no inquiry held.
'It was just concluded that Mr. Ball would be given 10 years.'
The Appeals Panel said it was also reasonable for Mr Ball to accept correspondence from QRIC in April, 2024 that he would be free to reapply for his licence in 2025.
'Mr Ball isn't a lawyer,' Judge O'Brien said.
'In that correspondence there's no hint of a further breach and he has read the letter as any reasonable person would.'
The Appeals Panel has reserved their decision until July 7.

'We'll get beat': Alice Springs trainer Dick Leech charged after prejudicial comments in leaked video
Alice Springs trainer Dick Leech has been charged with conduct prejudicial for comments in a leaked video about stopping Darwin Cup-bound Hasseltoff from winning a lead-up race on Saturday. In a video sent to owners of the former Victorian-based galloper Hasseltoff, Leech said the Alice Springs Cup winner would go around Saturday 'for a look' in the 1300m ROANT Gold Cup (Div 2). 'He's getting a fair bit of spark in him now,' Leech said after initial commentary about the gelding's condition. 'He'll go around next Saturday in the 1300m … but we'll only be going for a look. 'We'll get beat … we gotta get beat then we'll go for the Chief Minister's (Cup) a fortnight later, mile. 'We got to win that and then on towards the (Darwin) Cup but going quite good.' A person behind the camera then asked Leech, 'all right, so hopefully the jockey can hold him?' 'Yeah, yeah, he will be getting held,' Leech laughed. 'The worst jockey in Australia put on him.' NT Stewards obtained the leaked footage on Thursday and ordered Leech to front an inquiry on Friday. NT chairman of stewards David Hensler said Leech pleaded guilty to a conduct prejudicial charge. Stewards expect to hand down a monetary penalty in coming days. 'It's of great concern to us, the stewards, that (vision) would be in the public arena,' Hensler said. 'We've treated the matter very seriously. 'I only saw it (video) yesterday (Thursday) and we acted on it today … that's how seriously we've treated (this matter).' Leech scratched Hasseltoff on Thursday after the horse pulled up lame from a track gallop. 'It saved a further issue for us to deal with, really,' Hensler said. 'Hopefully, for the connections, the horse can get over the lameness and progress to the (Darwin Cup), because that's obviously its target.' Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock Director Darren Dance, managing owner of Hasseltoff, lamented the 'unfortunate situation' as a prank gone wrong. 'Turns out to be an unfortunate situation as Hasseltoff was always going to be first up in the Chief Minister's Cup, en route to win the Darwin Cup as his main mission for the preparation,' Dance said. 'After a super preparation in Alice Springs, where he was unbeaten … the team up there appeared to be joking around about him running this Saturday. 'To stir me up, as they know I am keen for him to go through the carnival undefeated. 'It was never the intention to run (Saturday) as he was always going to be weighted out with his rating … now, it's a big story.'

Former Greens candidate Hannah Thomas hospitalised after pro-Palestinian protest in Sydney
A former Greens candidate has been hospitalised after being injured during an arrest at a pro-Palestinian protest. The incident occurred outside SEC Plating in Belmore in Sydney's south-west on Friday morning. The protesters allege the company supplies components used by the class of jets which are flown by the Israeli Defence Force. NSW Police attempted to move the group on, claiming the action was unauthorised. "During the 35-year-old woman's arrest, she sustained facial injuries and was taken to Bankstown Hospital for treatment," police said in a statement. The woman has been identified as Hannah Thomas, who challenged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the federal seat of Grayndler at the election earlier this year. A video filmed by one of the protesters shows a scuffle between police and some of the attendees. Some of the protesters can be heard saying "let go of her". A woman in a black coat is then led away from the group and falls to the ground with a police officer. Police can be heard saying "get up now", and the woman can be heard replying: "I'm trying". A photo from after the incident appears to show Ms Thomas standing beside an officer with a swollen eye. A protester who witnessed the incident spoke to ABC News on the condition of anonymity. The witness said they saw Ms Thomas being tripped to the ground, and that she was struck in the face when officers attempted to get her to her feet. "It was very clearly a strike to the eye." Another attendee, Zack Schofield, said he saw her face after the incident. "I looked over to my right and saw a young woman with blood gushing out of the right side of her face, her right eye completely closed," Mr Schofield said. "She had clearly been struck with significant force." Police have told ABC News the incident is not being formally investigated as a critical incident, but will be recorded and reviewed as is standard practice for any use of force. "At this stage no issues have been identified, and no complaints have been received regarding the Belmore protests," a police spokesperson said. No charges have been laid against Ms Thomas. SEC Plating has also been contacted to respond to allegations it supplies components used by the Israeli military. The ABC understands Ms Thomas was scheduled for surgery this afternoon. It's believed doctors have been investigating whether her injuries could threaten her vision, and if she has any broken bones in her face. Federal Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi said she'd been assisting Ms Thomas. "Hannah's health is my top priority," Ms Faruqi said "It is devastating that police would bring violence against a non-violent protest for peace, but not surprising. NSW Greens MP Sue Higginson issued a statement, alongside federal MP David Shoebridge. "I have spoken with the people in police custody this morning, in my legal capacity, and they cannot believe what they saw happen to the individual who has sustained serious injury as a result of the excessive police force," Ms Higginson said. Police said four others were arrested at the protest, including a 24-year-old man who they allege temporarily stole a police body worn camera. They were taken to Campsie Police Station where they were charged with a range of offences and granted conditional bail. The four charged are due to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Tuesday, July 15.
