Former Greens candidate Hannah Thomas hospitalised after pro-Palestinian protest in Sydney

A former Greens candidate has been hospitalised after being injured during an arrest at a pro-Palestinian protest.
The incident occurred outside SEC Plating in Belmore in Sydney's south-west on Friday morning.
The protesters allege the company supplies components used by the class of jets which are flown by the Israeli Defence Force.
NSW Police attempted to move the group on, claiming the action was unauthorised.
"During the 35-year-old woman's arrest, she sustained facial injuries and was taken to Bankstown Hospital for treatment," police said in a statement.
The woman has been identified as Hannah Thomas, who challenged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the federal seat of Grayndler at the election earlier this year.
A video filmed by one of the protesters shows a scuffle between police and some of the attendees.
Some of the protesters can be heard saying "let go of her".
A woman in a black coat is then led away from the group and falls to the ground with a police officer.
Police can be heard saying "get up now", and the woman can be heard replying: "I'm trying".
A photo from after the incident appears to show Ms Thomas standing beside an officer with a swollen eye.
A protester who witnessed the incident spoke to ABC News on the condition of anonymity.
The witness said they saw Ms Thomas being tripped to the ground, and that she was struck in the face when officers attempted to get her to her feet.
"It was very clearly a strike to the eye."
Another attendee, Zack Schofield, said he saw her face after the incident.
"I looked over to my right and saw a young woman with blood gushing out of the right side of her face, her right eye completely closed," Mr Schofield said.
"She had clearly been struck with significant force."
Police have told ABC News the incident is not being formally investigated as a critical incident, but will be recorded and reviewed as is standard practice for any use of force.
"At this stage no issues have been identified, and no complaints have been received regarding the Belmore protests," a police spokesperson said.
No charges have been laid against Ms Thomas.
SEC Plating has also been contacted to respond to allegations it supplies components used by the Israeli military.
The ABC understands Ms Thomas was scheduled for surgery this afternoon.
It's believed doctors have been investigating whether her injuries could threaten her vision, and if she has any broken bones in her face.
Federal Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi said she'd been assisting Ms Thomas.
"Hannah's health is my top priority," Ms Faruqi said
"It is devastating that police would bring violence against a non-violent protest for peace, but not surprising.
NSW Greens MP Sue Higginson issued a statement, alongside federal MP David Shoebridge.
"I have spoken with the people in police custody this morning, in my legal capacity, and they cannot believe what they saw happen to the individual who has sustained serious injury as a result of the excessive police force," Ms Higginson said.
Police said four others were arrested at the protest, including a 24-year-old man who they allege temporarily stole a police body worn camera.
They were taken to Campsie Police Station where they were charged with a range of offences and granted conditional bail.
The four charged are due to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Tuesday, July 15.

Teen, 16, charged after allegedly throwing headrests, rocks at cops pursuing stolen ute

A teenager has been charged after allegedly pelting headrests and rocks at police who were pursuing an allegedly stolen ute. Police were patrolling the Pacific Hwy near Kempsey about 4am on June 21 when officers attempted to stop a utility vehicle which had been reported stolen. A pursuit was initiated when the vehicle allegedly failed to stop, NSW Police said in a statement. 'Officers deployed road spikes to stop the vehicle; however, it continued driving and the pursuit was terminated after police lost sight of the vehicle,' a NSW Police spokesperson said. 'A short time later, the utility drove past Kempsey Police Station and a headrest was thrown from the utility, causing minor damage to a police vehicle.' It is alleged a second headrest was thrown at an officer inspecting the damage, hitting them in the abdomen. The officer was not injured. Officers continued to patrol the area and were approached by the ute when they stopped in West Kempsey, where more rocks were allegedly thrown at their vehicle. 'When police attempted to pursue the utility, it turned around and allegedly drove at speed toward the officer's vehicle, resulting in a collision,' the police spokesperson said. A large rock was allegedly thrown at the police vehicle again, smashing the front windscreen and rendering it inoperable. No officers were injured. It is alleged rocks and a headrest were then thrown from the ute at a different police vehicle in West Kempsey. Another attempted pursuit was terminated after police lost sight of the vehicle. About 5.45am that same morning, the ute was recovered on Jack Bond Cres in West Kempsey. 'The vehicle was seized to undergo forensic examination, and officers attached to Mid North Coast Police District commenced an investigation,' a police spokesperson said. Following extensive inquiries, police executed a search warrant at a home in West Kempsey on Friday, before arresting a 16-year-old boy in South Kempsey. He was taken to Kempsey Police Station where he was charged with two counts of be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner. He will front a children's court on Saturday.

Grafton man allegedly steals cow semen and embryos

Police have charged a man over his alleged theft of cow semen, embryos and dozens of Wagyu cattle from his former employer. A strike force was formed by NSW Police last year to investigate allegations of 'fraud and stolen genetics' from a cattle farm on the state's north coast. An extensive search led police to a 34-year-old man who had been requested to sell 200 recipient and empty cattle on behalf of his employer. Instead, police allege, the man also sold 45 full-blood Wagyu cows and heifers against his employer's wishes. Further, it is alleged that he used a third-party buyer to purchase the 45 full-blood cattle alongside dozens of other cows for himself. In his dealings, police allege the man gained almost $100,000 of a financial advantage from the greatly reduced price of the 45 cows. But it was during a search warrant executed by police that a 'genetic liquid nitrogen storage tank which contained stolen cattle semen' was seized, police said. The semen was worth $100,000. NSW Police seized a genetic liquid nitrogen storage tank they say contained stolen cattle semen. Picture: NewsWire/ Gaye Gerard Further, the man allegedly engaged a 48-year-old Grafton veterinarian after he was asked to get medical help for six sick Wagyu bulls. The vet allegedly produced false documentation of providing care without treating the cattle, with at least two later dying from their illness. The 48-year-old man was arrested on Monday and charged with commit an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal, being in charge of an animal fail to provide vet treatment, and do act intending to pervert the course of justice. The 34-year-old alleged semen thief was arrested on Tuesday and charged with 20 offences. His charges include two counts of steal cattle, three counts of take and use others cattle, and a charge of commit an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal. He was bailed to appear in Grafton Local Court on Monday, August 4, 2025, while the 48-year-old was bailed to appear on Monday, August 11, 2025. Federal Group wants 'independent assessment and oversight' of Macquarie Point stadium

Daniel Hanna I think we always thought this would be the final process. Obviously, we had a debate not that long ago about referring the stadium proposal to the Project of State Significance and the Planning Commission. So we put in submissions in good faith. And yeah, I certainly believe probably the process should continue. I think we need some independent assessment and oversight of this proposal. Obviously, we've got quite a number of concerns about what is proposed for the stadium at Macquarie Point. I want the opportunity to hear them and think they should be independently assessed. David Reilly So to be clear, you feel like this overriding legislation that's been proposed or that's been supported, that's already been tabled and supported by both Labor and Liberal, we're expecting after the election, you feel that that is the wrong approach, Daniel Hanna? Daniel Hanna Yes, absolutely we do. I've had a good look through that draft legislation, which was previously tabled. And there obviously was a consultation process. We put in a submission to that, but we had a lot of concerns. I mean, effectively that draft legislation, if anyone can have a look at it, I'd encourage them to do so. Really what that took away was all of the, for example, the appeal rights for any third party. It would override any piece of legislation, anything in the planning scheme, and also would give the Minister of the Day absolute discretion to make amendments at any time. So really there's, we thought all of the usual protections that neighbours and other parties have would be overridden. And it's, I don't think a good piece of legislation at all. David Reilly So opening submissions today, you're not due to give evidence, I think for a week or so, is that right? But what's the gist of what you'll be telling the commission? Daniel Hanna Yeah, look, we're appearing next week and we'll be making our submissions. Obviously we put in a comprehensive submission to the TPC and we'll be making submissions along those lines. I mean, we've got a number of concerns and certainly some of the more general ones are around this. We believe this stadium is just, what's proposed is in the wrong location. It's in a heritage zone. We, as a private sector operator and investor, have developed in good faith, complying with the existing Sullivan's Cove planning scheme, which represents a lot of those heritage values. And we just don't think a 55 metre tall stadium of the bulk and height that's proposed is appropriate right to the edge of Evans Street. And it will forever change what is a beautiful maritime heritage zone that's valued by Tasmanians and visitors. David Reilly Well, also, of course, valued by your company, it does push up pretty closely against some of your own accommodation assets. Exactly what's in that area that Federal Group currently owns and operates? Daniel Hanna So we own and operate the Henry Jones Art Hotel and the facilities that surround the Henry Jones. We've also got the Mac One Hotel, both on the waterfront. Clearly the Henry Jones is probably the most impacted. If you look at that iconic vista, I guess, from the docks from Mures over towards Hunter Street and the Henry Jones, it really is one of the iconic images in Tasmania. Unfortunately, with the stadium that's proposed, we'll have a massive structure looming right over the top of Henry Jones, right to the edge of Evans Street. We've also got some other very direct concerns around the stadium during construction and operation in that location. And that goes to things like getting access, for example. We believe Evans Street will be closed a significant proportion of the time during construction and then operation. And that's how our guests, our staff and our suppliers can all access our hotels. We're very concerned about access. We're also concerned about other things, yeah, noise, lights and shadowing, and parking as well, to be frank. David Reilly We've had a couple of people asking about this Mac 2.0, the Stadium 2.0 proposal, backed by Dean Coleman and of course, former Labor Premier, Paul Lennon. One text are asking, is it true that Federal Group is behind Stadium 2.0? Now it's sort of gone off the boil a little bit, this project, but is that still your preference, that site? Daniel Hanna Yeah, look, that would still be our preference. I think it deals with a lot of the heritage issues that we've got concerns about. So I would certainly encourage whenever we run over this election and we have a new government in place to consider that proposal. But let me first of all, address the concern raised in that text. I can absolutely tell you that Federal is definitely not behind 2.0. David Reilly So not linked to 2.0 and Paul Lennon? Daniel Hanna No, we have nothing to do with that project. Obviously the proponents of that project have presented to us in the past as a company, many months ago. And we thought that that was a very good project, worthy of consideration, would address a lot of our concerns and is, I think, still worthy of consideration. We think it's a much better location and I think delivers a better bang for the buck.
