Milk of mom's hard work: Girl hits new heights
'My only dream was to see my daughter study and make it big in life.' That dream has now taken her daughter, R Rajapriya, across the world to Brazil and soon to Finland. At 35, Rajapriya is now a post-doctoral researcher in cement chemistry, supported by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) in Brazil. Another leap came when she was recently awarded the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Fellowship 2024 with a perfect evaluation score of 100%. The fellowship, valued at Rs 2.8 crore, will see her researching sustainable construction technologies at the University of Oulu in Finland, with a six-month stint at C2CA Technology in Netherlands.
Rajapriya was just a toddler when her father, a farmer, died of jaundice. Left with no income and a child to raise, Santhi started selling milk to local cooperative societies. She recalled, 'We had four cows then, now only two remain.' With meagre earnings from selling, private schooling was out of reach. Hence, Santhi enrolled Rajapriya at Attur Government Girls' Higher Secondary School. Her brilliance soon spoke for her. By Class 8, a private school offered her free admission, impressed by her exam scores.
After scoring 1,096 out of 1,200 in Class 12, she chose civil engineering on the advice of a relative's friend during the Anna University counselling session.
Rajapriya said, 'Back then, we had no idea about higher studies. Based on his suggestion, I chose engineering at a college in Chennai.'
To cover her college and hostel expenses, the family had to take out an educational loan. After completing her BE, she took up teaching briefly before pursuing her ME in Construction Engineering and Management. Upon completing ME, she resumed teaching, this time at a private engineering college in Chennai, where she worked for two years.

Lokesh to meet Union Ministers to push for clearance for Andhra projects
Andhra Pradesh's Minister for Information Technology and Human Resources Development, Nara Lokesh, will meet Union Ministers in Delhi on Monday to discuss key pending projects of the state with the Central government. Lokesh will leave for the national capital on Sunday. He is scheduled to have a series of meetings with Union Ministers to push for faster clearances for pending projects and to discuss some new initiatives for Andhra Pradesh. Lokesh, who is the son of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, will hold meetings with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The state government is expected to present a set of proposals to each of these ministries during the discussions, according to a statement from the minister's office. Since the formation of the coalition government in the state, Minister Lokesh has already met Union Ministers on multiple occasions and has been actively pursuing the state's interests. His efforts have helped bring new projects to Andhra Pradesh and ensure quicker approvals from the Centre, it said. The HRD Minister is said to be making a concerted push to place Andhra Pradesh on par with the most developed states in the country. During his visit, Lokesh is also expected to meet Union Railway, IT and Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and thank him personally for sanctioning a Semiconductor Manufacturing Unit to the state. The Union Cabinet on August 12 approved a semiconductor facility in Andhra Pradesh. Advanced System in Package Technologies (ASIP) will be tying up with APACT Co. Ltd, South Korea, for an annual capacity of 96 million units. These will be used in mobile phones, set-top boxes, automobiles and other new-age electronics applications, and will greatly contribute to an Atmanirbhar Bharat, Lokesh had said while thanking the Prime Minister for sanctioning the facility. The Union Cabinet decided to set up new semiconductor manufacturing units under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). These units will come up in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Punjab. The cumulative investment will be around Rs 4,600 crore.

The ambitious program aims to send an Indian astronaut into space aboard an Indian rocket, launched from Indian soil, using entirely indigenous technology. If successful, India would become only the fourth country in the world to achieve this milestone, after Russia (then the USSR), the United States, and China. China reached this milestone in 2003, and no other nation has done so since using its own technology. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned Shukla's successful journey to space as he announced the creation of India's own space station as part of the self-reliance push in his Independence Day speech. India's space ambitions have expanded significantly in recent years, with milestones such as the successful Chandrayaan-3 lunar landing and the launch of the Aditya-L1 solar mission. These achievements not only demonstrate technological capability but also position India as a competitive force in global space exploration. The government continues to promote private sector involvement and international collaboration to accelerate innovation and expand the nation's presence in space.

IUML chief, ISRO chairman among I- Day awardees
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday presented various state government awards as part of the Independence Day celebrations after hoisting the national flag on the ramparts of Fort St George in Chennai. IUML president Prof KM Kader Mohideen (85) received the Thagaisal Thamizhar Award, which carries a cheque for Rs 10 lakh and a citation. 'Apart from his political career, Prof Mohideen has been an inspiring teacher who has shaped hundreds of graduates and elevated their lives. He is actively pursuing his mission to establish a Quran University in Tamil Nadu,' the citation read. ISRO chairman Dr V Narayanan received the APJ Abdul Kalam Award. Born in Melakattuvilai, Kanniyakumari, Narayanan pioneered propulsion systems for rockets and satellites, led the development of the C25 Cryogenic Stage for the LVM3 launch vehicle, and holds three world Kalpana Chawla Award for Courage and Daring Enterprise went to Selvi Thulasimathi Murugesan of Kancheepuram. Despite being born with muscular dystrophy in her left hand, she has won 40 medals, including 22 golds, in badminton tournaments.
