Heavy defeats but Sharks maintain youth strategy as Junior Bok star starts
According to The Citizen, the Sharks lost their first two Currie Cup matches heavily (46–5 to the Lions in Johannesburg and 64–0 to the Bulls in Pretoria). The Gauteng sides have opted to back more senior, though fringe, players, and this has worked well for them in the competition. Both teams have 10 points after bonus-point wins.
The Sharks, however, sit with no wins and a points difference of -105 with five games to go. Believing their strategy of building depth will pay off in the prolonged seasons ahead, they selected another young and relatively inexperienced side to play the Cheetahs tomorrow at 17:10.
Vusi Moyo earns first start
This means that Vusi Moyo, who shone in the Junior Springboks' World Rugby U20 Championship title win, receives his first professional rugby start after appearing off the bench against the Bulls.
He is one of many bright lights emerging from the U20 side, a flyhalf with excellent composure in front of the posts, slotting kicks from over 50m.
He replaces Jean Smith, who will play from the bench, and teams up with Sharks vice-captain Bradley Davids at nine. When asked about this, coach JP Pietersen said after scoring just five points in two matches, the Sharks were desperate to find combinations that would yield results.
'We are just trying combinations with Bradley [Davids] and [Vusi] Moyo and then Jean [Smith] and Ceano [Everson] off the bench,' Pietersen said. 'See if they can enlighten the team and give us more of an attacking opportunity or something that can spark the team.
'We don't have a lot of time. We hardly had a pre-season. So in quite a short amount of time, we need to look for solutions.'
Sharks back youngsters for future rewards
Another SA U20 player, Matt Romao, features in the side that has seen some chopping and changing for the Cheetahs. See the Sharks' matchday 23 here.
'Every union has their own plan,' the Sharks coach added. 'If you look at us and Western Province, we have a plan where we want to develop youth, get growth for our United Rugby Championship because we know it is a long competition.
'You can see the Bulls and Lions have a different route, and only time will tell which is the right way.'

Cavaliers roar louder: Boland overpowers Lions in Currie Cup showdown
Boland Cavaliers flyhalf Ashlon Davids produced a commanding performance against the Lions on Sunday in the Currie Cup. Image: BackpagePix The Boland Cavaliers showed their Currie Cup mettle on Sunday as they subdued the Lions with excellent defence and a powerful scrummaging and lineout performance to claim a vital 29-10 bonus-point victory in Wellington. After two good wins, the Johannesburg side looked a shadow of the team they had been in the previous games, losing the physical battle, faltering in the lineouts, missing numerous tackles, and spilling their ball at scrum time. It was their counterparts who looked more dangerous, and the shock win in front of their home fans will give the Bolanders plenty of confidence as they continue a bright start to the tournament. Next Stay Close ✕ Despite losing their captain early in the game, and copping a yellow card in the first five minutes, the Cavaliers started the game off well and the two tries through winger Donavan Don, who has become a try-scoring sensation early in the competition, put the side in the driving seat. And they never gave up that dominance, taking a 15-5 lead into halftime. Last weekend, against Griquas, they also led at halftime but gave it up to eventually lose. However, this time around, the star-studded Lions couldn't muster up anything to disturb the rhythm of their hosts and the supporters at Boland Stadium were treated to a brilliant game by their side. Yes, there were plenty of errors that they can improve on, but despite that, they shut the Lions down. While it was an excellent team effort – something head coach Hawies Fourie will be proud of – a few of the Cavaliers players spearheaded the win. Eighth man Thurlow Marsh, who stole a couple of lineout balls, tighthead prop Dayaan van der Westhuizen, who emulated Richie McCaw with his ball stealing at the breakdown, and flyhalf Ashlon Davids also played out of their skin. The sharp attacking play of Davids, buoyed by Schreuder's speed behind the ruck, carved the Lions' defence up a couple of times when the ball came down the backline. Winger Xavier Mitchell and replacement Juan Mostert completed the try-scoring in the second half to seal the bonus point for the hosts. Currie Cup result: Boland shock Lions in Wellington
Both teams looked to play attacking rugby but were guilty of making numerous errors. The Boland Cavaliers shocked the Lions 29-10 in an entertaining, yet error-ridden round three Currie Cup match played in Wellington on Sunday afternoon to announce themselves as title contenders in 2025. Hawies Fourie's team scored four tries to the two by the Lions, who had comfortably won their two previous matches, at home against Western Province and the Sharks. And after the Bulls' loss on Saturday (to the Pumas), who were also unbeaten going into round three, there are no longer any unbeaten teams in this year's competition and the top six of the eight-team log is as tight as it can get. The Pumas, Cheetahs and Boland are on 11 points each, while the Lions, Griquas and Bulls are on 10 points each. The Cavaliers secured their bonus point late on thanks to a try by replacement Juan Mostert, who made a big impact. Earlier Donavan Don, who got two, and Xavier Mitchell scored tries for the team, while fullback James Tedder kicked well and also played a big role in his team's attacking game. The Lions' tries came from Kade Wolhuter and Gianni Lombard. Pumas beat Bulls The other big result of the weekend was the Pumas' impressive and unexpected 41-7 thrashing of the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls had won their two opening games of the season and were favoured to make it three in a row against the men from Mbombela. But Jimmy Stonehouse's Pumas played some sparkling rugby in scoring six tries to the one by their hosts. The 2022 champions are now very much back in the race for the semifinals, with four regular season games to play. They're next up at home against the Lions, while the Bulls will be in Wellington to take on Boland. Also on Saturday, the Cheetahs pipped the Sharks 7-5 in Clermont in a low-scoring but fairly entertaining match, though both teams made an abundance or errors. It was the third loss in a row for the men from KwaZulu-Natal. The Sharks next go to Kimberley for a date with Griquas, who pulled off a big win at home on Friday, beating Western Province 47-17 while the Cheetahs are up against the men from Cape Town in Bloemfontein. After three straight defeats without picking up a bonus point, Western Province are bottom of the points table, with the Sharks just a head of them with one (bonus) point.

JP Pietersen praises resilience of young Sharks in close call against Cheetahs
The Sharks XV suffered another loss against the Cheetahs at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont on Saturday. Sharks XV coach JP Pietersen praised the resilience shown by his young Currie Cup team in fronting up to the Free State Cheetahs, despite suffering a third loss on the bounce in the competition on Saturday evening at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont, west of Durban. "Obviously we didn't get the result but immensely proud of the team. It's been tow tough weeks. We stood up today against a well-coached Cheetahs team, fronting up on our home ground in showing the performance that we did today," the coach said after the match. The home team lost the closely contested match 7-5, with a missed conversion denying them at least a share of the spoils against their more experienced rivals. "The game was obviously won and lost defensively. You can see both teams defended well but the Cheetahs took the opportunity," Pietersen said. "It was just unfortunate we couldn't get our continuity on attack. We did some very good things on attack, we just couldn't get continuity. "But it takes time to build cohesion, to get a feel (for each other). Vusi Moyo was new at 10, Marnus Diego was new (at centre). It takes time, so I'm extremely proud of the group today."
