Mr. Ali scrambled back into his vehicle, threw it into reverse and sped off, security footage from a nearby house showed. 'It is sheer luck that he managed to get away unscathed,' a local prosecutor, Hannah Sidaway, said.
On Tuesday, Aimee Betro, 45, an American woman from Wisconsin, was convicted in the failed assassination attempt against Mr. Ali. A jury in a court in Birmingham found her guilty of conspiracy to murder, firearm possession and importing ammunition after a three-week trial.
Prosecutors say the botched attack, on Sept. 7, 2019, was the culmination of a feud between two families in England's Midlands region that had started the previous year with a fistfight in a Birmingham clothing store owned by Mr. Ali's father.
In that episode, Mohammed Aslam, 56, and his son Mohammed Nazir, 31, were injured. In the aftermath, they decided to exact revenge through a murder plot targeting Mr. Ali's father or other members of the family, the police said. The assassin they chose was far from local.

Woman charged with assault after migrant ‘walked into her flat'
A woman has been charged with assaulting a security guard at a hotel housing migrants after one of its residents allegedly walked into her flat, the Metropolitan Police has said. The migrant, who is in his early 20s, has also been arrested on suspicion of assault, the force said. Footage began circulating on social media on Wednesday of a man entering a house after being told 'to go back to the hotel'. He was later detained by members of the public nearby. In an update on Friday, the Met said Channay Augustus, 22, has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon, affray, assault on an emergency worker, common assault and possession of cannabis. She is an occupant of the flat that was entered. The affray and common assault charges relate to an altercation at the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf later on Wednesday evening, police said. The hotel has been a focus of protests in recent weeks. The alleged victim of the common assault is a security guard at the hotel, the Met said. Augustus, of Tower Hamlets, will appear at Thames Magistrates' Court on Friday. Officers arrested the migrant in the Hackney area on suspicion of common assault in the early hours of Friday morning. 'We can confirm that this is the man who allegedly entered the flat,' a statement said. He remains in police custody.

Man arrested after girlfriend's decomposing body found in his Limpopo home
A 33-year-old man was arrested in Seshego, Limpopo in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, after her decomposing body was found in his home on Tuesday night. 'Police were called to the scene at about 23:35, where they found the lifeless body of a 26-year-old woman inside the suspect's residence. The victim had sustained multiple injuries. Preliminary investigations suggest that she may have been killed several days earlier, as her body was already in an early stage of decomposition,' said police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba. The man is expected to appear in the Seshego Magistrate's Court on Friday on a murder charge. Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, said the murder was 'deeply disturbing and senseless'. 'We urge communities to report any signs of domestic violence before they escalate to such tragic outcomes,' he added.
