Prisons dept was okay with Najib filing report, says Shafee
KUALA LUMPUR : Najib Razak's lawyer claims that the prisons department would have allowed the former prime minister to file a police report over the royal addendum issue if home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had given permission.
However, Shafee Abdullah said that multiple letters for permission from the minister went unanswered, forcing him to help lodge the report on behalf of his client.
'The prison authorities are generous, they had no objections to Najib filing a report himself. Unfortunately, they needed permission from their superior, which is the home minister.
'We wrote to him multiple times but there was no reply,' he told a press conference at the lobby of the court complex here today.
Earlier this week, Shafee lodged a police report against former attorney-general Ahmad Terrirudin Salleh for allegedly 'deliberately misleading' the High Court that the royal addendum was speculative and based on hearsay evidence.
He lodged the report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters.
Shafee claimed that Terrirudin had committed an offence under Section 209 of the Penal Code, which relates to dishonestly making a false claim before a court.
He also accused the ex-AG of committing an offence under Section 204 of the Penal Code by hiding a document with the intention of preventing it from being used as evidence in court.
Last month, Najib filed an application to initiate contempt proceedings against Terrirudin, who is now a Federal Court judge.
His legal team claimed that Terrirudin, while serving as the AG, failed to reveal the former king's royal addendum allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his jail sentence under house arrest.
During a hearing in January, Shafee told the Court of Appeal that the addendum was sent by the Pahang palace to Terrirudin on Jan 29, 2024.

Akmal Saleh gives statement to police at Dang Wangi station

Passenger drives off as e-hailing driver takes toilet break
SEREMBAN: Police have arrested a 22-year-old passenger who drove off when the e-hailing vehicle owner went to relieve himself at a petrol station here. District OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Hatta Che Din said police managed to track down the vehicle via GPS and caught the suspect at the parking lot of an apartment block in Seri Subang, Selangor. 'The e-hailing driver picked up the passenger at Taman Bukit Jed at 3.30am on Wednesday and then stopped at a petrol station in Bandar Ainsdale. 'After he had fuelled up, he went to the toilet but left the engine running as the passenger was inside,' he said. The 61-year-old driver got a shock when he saw his car and the passenger missing after he came out. He then lodged a report. 'We caught the suspect around noon on Thursday and a preliminary probe revealed that he had driven the car away. 'We managed to locate the vehicle,' said ACP Mohamad Hatta. Checks revealed that the suspect has a criminal record for committing mischief, housebreaking and vehicle theft. The suspect also tested positive for methamphetamine. The case is being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code, which deals with vehicle theft. Offenders can be jailed between one and seven years and fined upon conviction.

Two accused of supporting IS
JOHOR BARU: Two Bangladesh factory workers have been charged at a Sessions Court here for allegedly supporting the Islamic State (IS) group. Md Refat Bishat, 27, was accused of possessing an image of an IS flag in his mobile phone at a house in Jalan Datin Halimah, Larkin, here at around 4.30pm on July 10. No plea was recorded because the accused told the court he did not fully understand the charge, which was read to him in Bahasa Malaysia. 'Faham sikit-sikit saja,' he told the court. The charge was framed under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which carries imprisonment of up to seven years or a fine, and confiscation of the material. Deputy public prosecutor Nur Ainaa Ridzwan then requested for a Bangladeshi translator. Meanwhile, Md Mamun Ali (pic), 31, was separately charged with providing support to IS via Facebook under the name 'Sahifulla Islam' from July 28, 2023 to April 30, 2024. The offence, framed under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code, carries life imprisonment or up to 40 years with a fine upon conviction. Md Mamun said he did not understand what was read to him. DPP Maryam Jamielah Ab Manaff also requested for a Bangladeshi translator. Judge Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail granted the requests of both DPPs and fixed Sept 12 for next mention for both cases. In July, police announced they had smashed a network that was using social media to recruit supporters for the group with the arrest of more than 30 Bangladeshi nationals since April. The network had been spreading IS ideology and canvassing for funds from the migrant worker community to support its operations in Syria and Bangladesh.
