
Climate training programme launched
The initiative aims to equip professionals with the skills to utilize climate data and modern technology in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
As part of the program, Dr. Michiaki Sugita, Meritorious Professor at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, and an Evapotranspiration (ET) expert with FAO, visited SAU.
During his visit, Dr. Sugita inspected the advanced Flux Tower installed at the university's Latif Experimental Farm. The tower captures detailed atmospheric and environmental data, playing a critical role in supporting climate-Resilient agricultural research.
Dr. Michiaki Sugita was briefed on the tower's data acquisition capabilities, storage systems, and ongoing applications in research. He also met with SAU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Altaf Ali Siyal to discuss the importance of utilizing real-time environmental data for academic research, student training, and knowledge transfer to farmers.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Altaf Ali Siyal noted that Sindh is among the regions' most vulnerable to climate change globally, stressing the urgency of adopting science-based agricultural strategies.

Archaeological project: Japanese researchers collaborate with SALU
HYDERABAD: A delegation of Japanese researchers, led by Professor Akinori Uesugi Department of Cultural Properties, Tsurumi, Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Japan, called on Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Yousuf Khushk at Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, to discuss ongoing archaeological research collaboration. During the meeting, Dr. Khushk emphasized the strong ties between Pakistan and Japan, stating, 'Japan is close to us. We have previously organized programs with the Japanese Embassy and welcome such academic partnerships.' He assured full support for the research initiative, saying, 'We will extend all kinds of help if needed.' Professor Akinori Uesugi highlighted the ongoing three-week research project in collaboration with SALU's Archaeology Department. 'We are studying Pakistan's ancient civilizations, focusing on three key sites to understand how early communities communicated and cultivated crops,' he said. The team is analyzing pottery, life patterns, and other cultural artefacts to develop new theories on historical human settlements. Prof. Dr. Tasleem Abro, Head of the Archaeology Department, appreciated the VC's support and noted the project's benefits for students and faculty. 'Japanese experts are helping us in preservation, documentation, and research of archaeological findings, including pottery and beads. Their expertise is invaluable,' she said. The partnership also includes knowledge-sharing sessions, with an upcoming lecture by Dr. Akinori on pottery and cultural materials once the university reopens. The meeting was attended by Dr. Takehiro Miki, Prof. Dr. Agha Nadia and Dr. Sahib Oad, among other faculty members. Challenges facing academic sector: FPCCI body, SSUET organise meeting
KARACHI: The meeting of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Core Committee on Education Reforms, Edu-Tech Summit 2.0, was organized in collaboration with the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) of Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology. The primary aim was to identify challenges within the academic sector and to formulate strategies to enhance education through modern technology, artificial intelligence, and improved digital infrastructure, thereby elevating the quality of education across schools, colleges, and universities. The meeting was attended by the Chancellor of Sir Syed University, Muhammad Akbar Ali Khan, Registrar Cdre. Syed Sarfraz Ali (retd), Coordinator of Prime Minister Youth Program Sindh, Fahad Shafiq, Convenor FPCCI Education Reforms Committee, Ms. Sadaf Bhatti, Chairman of Computer Science & IT Department, Dr. Kashif Sheikh, Manager ORIC, Syed Muhammad Riazul Haq and representatives from different academic and industrial organizations. During the proceedings, Chancellor Muhammad Akbar Ali Khan emphasized the importance of leveraging modern technological education to unlock the youth's potential, stating that Sir Syed University aims to lead this transformative journey. Coordinator of Prime Minister Youth Program Sindh, Fahad Shafiq highlighted that integrating technology into education equips youth to face future challenges and reaffirmed government support for initiatives driving revolutionary educational change. Convenor of the Education Reform Committee of FPCCI, Sadaf Bhatti outlined the objectives of the upcoming Education Tech Reform Summit 2025, offering suggestions to promote AI and tech-based education within institutions to empower youth and enhance their performance. The speakers collectively underscored the critical need to empower young people, foster innovation and practical skills, and promote digital education nationwide as fundamental pillars of educational reform.
