Mamelodi Sundowns star striker Lucas Ribeiro was crowned the inaugural winner of the 'Goal of the Tournament' at the recently concluded Fifa Club World Cup in the US.
The accolade for Ribeiro's goal highlights a competitive selection process. He surpassed prestigious contenders, including a striking free-kick from football icon Lionel Messi against FC Porto and a stunning effort from João Pedro that helped Chelsea secure a 2-0 victory over Fluminense.
Fifa's announcement confirmed that Ribeiro's goal not only dazzled supporters but also earned rightful recognition in a field of football's elite.
The Brazilian-born player showcased his prowess on a grand stage, capturing the hearts of over 40 000 fans who voted for his goal after an extraordinary 47-yard run against Borussia Dortmund.
Sundowns could not contain their excitement and declared on social media: 'A piece of #FIFACWC history that will live long in the memory!'
In his skilful solo effort, Ribeiro displayed incredible pace and determination, evading the challenges of two defenders before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
"I am always confident. I'm happy to have scored the goal," Ribeiro told FIFA.com.
"The moment I turned with the ball, I said, 'okay, let me go, let me put the ball in the space.' I'm happy with the goal, but the most important thing is that the team performed well."
The goal has now been recognised as a standout moment among the 63 matches of the tournament.
As he celebrates this achievement, Ribeiro is also in contention for further accolades in the upcoming weeks. Having already earned the Golden Boot for the season, he has been nominated for both the PSL Footballer of the Season and the Players' Player of the Season awards, further solidifying his status as a rising star in South African football.
As football fans approach the new season, one thing is clear: Lucas Ribeiro is a name to watch.

Orlando Pirates news: R120 million, exit looms, new deal revealed
Orlando Pirates secured a 2-0 victory over Granada on Saturday to conclude their European pre-season tour. 20-year-old phenom Relebohile Mofokeng was one of the names on the scoresheet in what could be his final game for the Buccaneers amid substantial interest from several clubs across the globe, including Ah Ahly, FC Cincinnati, and Dutch giants PSV. According to reports, the latter is willing to pay over R100 million for the Sharpeville-born star. 'R100 million is like a round figure. It's more than that! The amount they were negotiating for was initially R120 million,' an inside source revealed. 'You know it's not exactly what you want that you get, and that's why they are talking about the R100 million, but it's believed to be more than that.' A second source confirmed PSV's intentions, alluding to the fact that the Orlando Pirates star is the preferred choice over their initial target Iqraam Rayners. 'There are different scouts from Holland who are believed to be working with recruiters for PSV. They enquired about Iqraam Rayners but it is believed that they are looking at a long-term investment now, and that's why they have opened up negotiations with Orlando Pirates for Rele Mofokeng,' the second insider revealed. Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates have reportedly offered 35-year-old maestro Makhehlene Makhaula contract discussion. Talks have been in motion for a couple months the players agent, Sizwe Ntshangase, confirmed in June. 'What I can confirm is that our discussions with Pirates have gone very well, to the satisfaction of both parties. It is up to Pirates to issue an official statement on Makhaula's contract and its duration,' Ntshangase said. 'I don't like to talk too much (to the media) about the contract of a player I represent, but I leave a lot to his team once we have concluded negotiations with them.' This award is directly related to the work at Mamelodi Sundowns, including our champions league final qualification and winning the PSL.' The 53-year-old tactician has been nominated for the PSL Coach of the Season award, alongside Stellenbosch FC's Steve Barker and former Orlando Pirates boss José Riveiro. Reflecting on the campaign, Cardoso highlighted key moments that shaped his successful season. 'I have many fantastic memories that come to mind regarding the first season here in the PSL. I think there are different moments but I can highlight the start which was amazing and difficult but very good in terms of results with important matches that were won immediately against Stellenbosch FC and AmaZulu FC away,' he concluded. 'That gave us the positive energy to gather the souls of everyone together and then I remember the month of January where we scored goal after goal and won matches by big margins. At that moment we sent a powerful statement and I also remember the period after we won against Al Ahly and qualified for the Caf Champions League final.
