Southern Living says this small Georgia town serves as the Watermelon Capital of the World

Yahoo21-06-2025
Nestled in the heart of Georgia's farm country, lies a small town with a big title, the "Watermelon Capital of the World."
Southern Living has just recently highlighted this small town calling it "home to farms, wide-open countryside, and more watermelons than you've likely seen in one place."
See where.
Located in Cordele, Georgia, there are fields of the iconic summer fruit. From here, watermelons are shipped across Georgia and beyond, feeding a region's appetite for this ultimate warm-weather treat.
"'Watermelon Capital of the World, and if you ever taste our home-grown melons, you'll understand why!" the city's website wrote. "Other major crops grown in the area are cotton, peanuts and pecans."
Cordele, Georgia is a small city located in Crisp County in south-central Georgia, about 140 miles or two hours south of Atlanta.
This town serves as the county seat of Crisp County and is often referred to as the "Gateway to South Georgia." Its central location makes it a convenient stop for travelers heading to or from Florida, and it's best known for its rich agricultural roots, especially its watermelon production.
According to World Population Review, this town has a population of just under 10,000.
But Cordele is more than just melons.
According to Southern Living, here are some things to do in this town:
Take a scenic ride on a vintage train car
Time your visit with the Watermelon Days Festival
Go to the Georgia Veterans State Park
Go golfing at the Memorial Golf Course
Watch a race at the speedway
Visit The Titan I Missile Monument

Underrated vacation destination? This SWFL city gets the nod from Southern Living

Note to self: send thank you cards to the editors at Southern Living. Maybe include crate of mangos and a box of Norman Love chocolates. Why the generosity? Southern Living has picked Fort Myers and the surrounding area as one of its "underrated vacation destinations" for 2025. And even better, the article recognized the fact that after a tumultuous couple of years dealing with hurricanes, including historic Hurricane Ian in September 2022, Fort Myers has recaptured its appeal as a place to visit. "After sustaining heavy damage from Hurricane Ian in 2022, Fort Myers, and its surrounding communities, have recovered nicely and are more than ready to welcome visitors to experience the magic of the City of Palms," Southern Living said. Now that is some good news! Southern Living calls Fort Myers "a gateway" to Southwest Florida. The story states: Fort Myers's downtown has plenty to see, do, and eat—and did we mention it's also situated on the beautiful Caloosahatchee River? Seeking a beach vacation where you can enjoy some R&R in the company of sand, sun, and surf? Fort Myers Beach has all you need. And if you want to venture down a road slightly less traveled, nearby Sanibel Island and Captiva Island offer even more room to roam. Southern Living went on to list, in detail, 20 best things to do in Fort Myers, including: This article originally appeared on Fort Myers News-Press: Southern Living's list of Florida's best underrate vacation places

Fire forces Delta flight from Atlanta to make emergency landing. Here's what caused the issue

A Delta Air Lines flight departing from Atlanta was forced to make an emergency landing Monday morning after a lithium battery reportedly caught fire in a passenger's backpack, prompting safety concerns mid-flight. Here is what we know about the incident. Delta flight makes emergency landing on Monday Flight 2135, going to Fort Lauderdale, was diverted to Fort Myers after the fire was detected onboard around 8:30 a.m. Crew members quickly responded, extinguishing the flames and securing the bag in a containment device designed for lithium battery fires. 'Ok, so the backpack has been contained. We think it was a lithium battery that caused the smoke and the fire. It's in a containment bag. No smoke in the cabin at this point. No active fire. It's in the lavatory. We're planning on taxiing clear of the runway,' the pilot told the Air Traffic Control Tower. The aircraft safely landed at Southwest Florida International Airport, and evaluated. No injuries were reported. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that it has opened an investigation into the incident Vanessa Countryman is the Trending Topics Reporter for the the Deep South Connect Team Georgia.
