Houston vs. Purdue: Can the Boilers take down Kelvin Sampson's top-seeded Cougars?

New York Times28-03-2025
Houston has made the Sweet 16 in the last six NCAA Tournaments, but is only 2-3 in that round during that span. This year's balanced team is seeking to show it's a national title contender. Can Purdue pull off the upset?

One reason I picked Houston to win the national championship back in October is its ability to make shots from all three guard spots. The Cougars are the best 3-point shooting team and the best defensive team in the country.

Something to watch is rebounding margins. Houston is one of the best offensive rebounding teams (11th nationally) and overwhelms teams with second-chance points. Purdue is 18-2 when grabbing 22 defensive rebounds or more but has only done it nine times this season. Houston is 20-1 when allowing fewer than 20 defensive rebounds.
In the past, teams have given the Cougars trouble in the pick-and-roll with short rolls, pops to the 3-point line or quick slips. Trey Kaufman-Renn has only shot 51 3s in his three-year career, but he is almost automatic around the rim with floaters, hooks and layups.
All-American point guard Braden Smith hasn't faced a defense this physical all season, but his toughness and poise can help the Boilermakers try to solve this feisty defense.
The foul count could also play a big role. Houston is physical and will look to impose its will. If one of Houston's guards gets into foul trouble, though, the game could shift.

Steelers' Cam Heyward hints at sitting out of games as contract negotiation tool

The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be in the midst of yet another ugly contract negotiation, as veteran DT Cameron Heyward recently hinted at what a worst-case scenario could look like. At training camp on Monday, Heyward was asked whether he'd contemplate sitting out games — missing time as he sought a new deal — and his response was hardly what Steelers fans were looking to hear. "I think there are definitely options out there that could reflect that," Heyward told reporters, via The Athletic's Mike DeFabo. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported last Thursday that Heyward and the Steelers were "privately" discussing a restructured contract after his dominant 2024 season — one where he was arguably the greatest defensive tackle in the league, despite being outside the top 20 in terms of salary. If sitting out games is truly where the contract negotiations are headed, the Steelers need to pay Heyward as soon as possible — especially with Pittsburgh appearing to be all in on 2025 for a Super Bowl push. Yankees make announcement on Gerrit Cole's return from injury

Yankees make announcement on Gerrit Cole's return from injury originally appeared on The Sporting News It's a good news, bad news situation for the New York Yankees. Gerrit Cole is making progress in his return from injury, but it won't be enough. The good: Cole has begun his throwing program, according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone's comments to reporters on Monday. But the bad news came from The Athletic's Chris Kirschner, who quickly answered the question everyone was thinking: "No, he is not an option in any capacity this season," wrote Kirschner. MORE: Twins' Ryan Fitzgerald reminds us why we love sports after a career spent in the minor leagues Cole underwent Tommy John surgery in spring training after experiencing discomfort in his right (throwing) elbow and learning that he needed reconstruction after a torn UCL. As expected, the Tommy John was a season-ending injury for Cole. The hope with that surgery is that the recovery lasts 12 months and not longer. The fact that Cole has begun his throwing program less than six months since the surgery is an optimistic sign that he may be ready to pitch by the start of the 2026 regular season. Cole's injury was just the first domino of many pitching injury issues the Yankees have had this season, not to mention a bunch of hitter injuries, too. MORE: Athletics use the first switch-thrower in MLB history That's part of the reason the Yanks are now third in the AL East and trying to turn their season around late to avoid an epic collapse out of the postseason field altogether. It'd certainly be nice to have Cole on the mound for some of the big games down the stretch, but that won't be happening. The Yankees will just have to settle for the good vibes that Cole has begun to throw at all, even though it won't impact the 2025 season.
