LA Kings president expects coach Jim Hiller to remain in charge after GM Blake's replacement hired
Robitaille expressed strong support for Hiller on Tuesday, one day after GM Rob Blake and the Kings mutually agreed to end Blake's eight-year tenure.
"Your general manager, you want to give him the freedom, you don't want to lock up a new person that's coming in, but the record of what Jimmy has done this year is really, really good," Robitaille said at the Kings' training complex. "It would be really hard for any GM to say, 'Well, this guy shouldn't come back.' He's been really good. I think Jimmy's a great coach, and I fully think that this guy is coming back, for sure."
Hiller has been in charge of the Kings' bench since February 2024, when the former assistant took over for the fired Todd McLellan. The Kings are 69-37-10 in Hiller's first job as an NHL head coach, and they matched franchise records with 48 victories and 105 points this season before losing to Edmonton in the first round for the fourth consecutive postseason.
Robitaille emphasized that the new GM would have the final say on the coaching staff, but the longtime team president reiterated his overall happiness with the state of the Kings' roster, their coaching staff and even their style of play despite their repeated playoff disappointments.
Robitaille made it clear that Blake supported the decision to seek new team leadership. Robitaille plans to hire a general manager who can provide a fresh perspective on how to change a talent-filled roster that can't get it done in the postseason.
"Blakey and I have been talking about it for probably a year," Robitaille said. "He always said he wanted to wait to sign (a contract extension). I'm not going to get into detail about our conversation, but it's something we talked about ... and we both agreed this was better for the franchise."
The former Kings teammates agreed that "it was time to probably bring a new voice just to get us to that next level," Robitaille added.
Los Angeles hasn't won a playoff series since raising the Stanley Cup in 2014, and the Oilers have bounced the Kings in four straight springs. Los Angeles has won only eight total games in those four first-round series, and Hiller's club lost its final four in a row last week after winning the first two at home.
Robitaille didn't sound close to hiring Blake's replacement. He plans to examine multiple candidates, including Marc Bergevin, the former Montreal GM who was a senior adviser to Blake for the past 3 1/2 years.
Robitaille isn't waiting until he hires a new GM to begin preparations for next season. Working with assistant general manager Nelson Emerson, Robitaille has already spoken to pending unrestricted free agents Andrei Kuzmenko and Vladislav Gavrikov, who both played significant roles in Los Angeles' late-season success.
When asked what he sought in a replacement for a general manager of a team coming off one of the best regular seasons in franchise history, Robitaille emphasized the importance of evaluating the Kings' roster with fresh eyes.
"We had a good year ... but it's sports, and you want to win the last game of the season," Robitaille said. "That's our goal."
Robitaille doesn't necessarily want to see the Kings abandon their regimented, defense-oriented style of play under McLellan and Hiller, however.
Fans often criticize Los Angeles' style as old-fashioned and not offense-forward, but Robitaille offered a passionate defense of a team that stopped relying so heavily on the neutral-zone trap this season and finished 14th in the NHL in goals scored (249).
"We had three of the best lines in hockey," Robitaille said. "We scored goals. We had a 40% power play (at the end of the season). We felt like we needed to tweak our power play, and credit to our guys, they figured it out. Some teams have a 60-goal scorer. We don't, but we have a lot of guys that can score goals. We play hard. We forecheck. We don't sit back. ... We want to push."

Steelers' Derrick Harmon gets emotional as he's carted off field with injury
The Pittsburgh Steelers may be without their top rookie for the near future. Defensive tackle Derrick Harmon was carted off the field during the Steelers' preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers. Harmon was injured while rushing from the interior. Panthers lineman Brandon Walton blocked him on the play and Harmon ended up on the ground as Carolina quarterback Jack Plummer rolled out to his right. Harmon was later seen on the broadcast reacting to his injury on the back of the cart. He's been ruled out of the rest of tonight's game. Pittsburgh drafted Harmon at No. 21 overall in the first round out of Oregon. One of the top interior defensive line prospects in the class, he is expected to start for the Steelers this season alongside Keeanu Benton and Cameron Heyward. Rookie Jaxson Dart gets the start in preseason finale for Giants, and continues to make plays
Jaxson Dart played his final game of this preseason for the New York Giants. The way he has played in the three preseason games, it shouldn't be long before we see him again. The first-round rookie quarterback has been one of the stars of the preseason. He had more highlights on Thursday night, leading a quick touchdown drive to start the game and making other nice throws. That's what he has done all month. Giants coach Brian Daboll has said at every turn that Russell Wilson is the team's starting quarterback, and he seems set on that plan for the opener. But Dart has gone from a player who everyone thought might need to sit half of a season or more to one that should get a chance pretty soon if Wilson struggles at all. There will continue to be speculation if he should just start the season as QB1. He has conjured up memories of the 2012 Seahawks and Wilson winning the job as a rookie with his stellar play in the preseason. Dart got the start as Wilson rested in Thursday's preseason finale against the New England Patriots, and the rookie made plays right away. He scrambled around on his first pass and hit Gunner Olszewski on a short pass. Olszewski turned upfield and gained 50 yards. The drive ended with Dart hitting tight end d for a 7-yard touchdown. Dart was much better than his final numbers would indicate. The Giants dropped five passes that should have been caught, including two by Beaux Collins and two more deep downfield to Jalin Hyatt. All of those passes were on the hands of the intended receiver, as Dart consistently delivered accurate passes. Dart also had a 13-yard pass wiped out due to a holding penalty, and that penalty led to the drive stalling. Dart finally had a bad play late in the first quarter. He scrambled on a fourth down play for the first down, but was hit hard and fumbled, and was taken to the medical tent to be checked for a concussion. The Giants kept possession due to a Patriots penalty on the play, Jameis Winston came on for Dart and on his first play he threw deep. Hyatt held onto that throw for a touchdown. Dart was back on the bench after a quick trip to the medical tent and cleared concussion protocol, but he was done for the night after the big hit. After Dart took that hit, the Amazon Prime broadcast caught a moment in which Daboll told his young quarterback, "Slide." He'll learn. Dart was 6 of 12 for 81 yards and it should have been way better if not for the dropped passes. He was only inaccurate on one pass, into the end zone after Olszewski's big again. Every time Dart has played in the preseason, he has made things happen. He might need some development coming out of an offense at Ole Miss that is much less complicated than a pro offense, but the results with the Giants have been promising. Wilson is a bridge quarterback to whenever the Dart era begins, and at this point in Wilson's career he has a fairly low ceiling. Giants fans aren't going to be patient if Wilson struggles, because they have seen Dart's ability to make plays. Given how good Dart was in August, Giants fans should see him again soon.
