Cowboys thrash Knights to pile more pressure on O'Brien
The 16th-placed Knights, after their sixth loss in a row, have the worst attack in the NRL. For the 11th time this season they were kept scoreless in the first half as the hosts took a 20-0 lead into the break in Townsville on Sunday.
It is the equal worst record in the State of Origin era, since 1980, in the "zero points in the first half" statistic, along with the 2014 Wests Tigers - and they still have three rounds to go.

The Knights are just two points clear of Gold Coast and could still finish with the wooden spoon.
O'Brien is contracted until the end of 2027. The Knights have been without injured playmakers Kalyn Ponga and Fletcher Sharpe, but their impotent attack has been an issue all year.
The Cowboys, now in 13th spot, look so much better when middle forward powerhouses Jason Taumalolo and Jordan McLean are on the field at the same time.
Injury has limited their liaisons this year, but they gave their side a flying start on Sunday.
Drinkwater has been his side's most creative force this year. He entered the match with the equal most try assists (20) and soon went to work to add two more to that tally.
He finished the match with 22 points courtesy of two tries and seven goals.
The 28-year-old whiz started and finished the opening try with nice ball play by Viliami Vailea.
Drinkwater showed immense commitment in defence and dislodged the ball with a desperate effort as Knights prop Jacob Saifiti was about to score under the sticks.
Cowboys rake Reece Robson spent 10 minutes in the sin bin for a professional foul, but the Knights attack was clueless.
They were made to pay when Cowboys co-captain Tom Dearden swooped on a Knights error when they failed to defuse a bomb, as they had for most of the half.
Winger Braidon Burns snared an intercept for an 85m try. A proud Gamilaroi man, the 29-year-old had a blinder in Indigenous round.
The Knights did not improve after the break. Drinkwater sent centre Jaxon Purdue on one of his graceful gallops to score in the 47th minute.
Knights winger Dominic Young grabbed a Jake Arthur bomb to get his side on the board, but Drinkwater grubbered to perfection for second-rower Jeremiah Nanai to score.
Drinkwater then backed up Dearden to add his second try.
Newcastle's 19-year-old debutant Connor Votano had a baptism of fire under the high ball with two early errors, but his teammates did not give him the support required.
Votano could have scored two tries, but was unable to latch on to passes that went above his head.

Latrell Mitchell has an almighty fight on his hands to reclaim the fullback jersey for South Sydney, after a staggering performance from Jye Gray on Saturday night. Gray was best on-field as the Rabbitohs beat the Eels 20-16, taking them out of wooden spoon calculations. Gray had 27 runs for a whopping 221 metres, making six tackle-breaks, a line-break and a try assist. But it was his work on the defensive side of the ball that was most noteworthy. Wayne Bennett usually prefers Mitchell in the No.1 jersey, but Gray was received plenty of playing time in 2025 due to injuries for Latrell. Mitchell made his return from a quad injury in the centres last week, before a pinched nerve in his back ruled him out of the Eels game. 'Not the right time': Family detail as major news about Cameron Smith emerges
Kevin Walters has revealed Cameron Smith won't be part of his coaching staff when the Kangaroos travel to England for the end of year Ashes tour, with the NRL legend choosing to prioritise family and his media commitments instead. Smith was believed to be in the running for the Kangaroos role when Mal Meninga departed, but it went to Walters instead. There'd been speculation that Smith would become an assistant to Walters when Australia play three Tests in England after the completion of the NRL season. But the Kangaroos coach revealed over the weekend it won't be happening. 'I don't think Cameron will be involved,' Walters told . 'It's just not the right time for him to be involved. We'll let him do what he needs to do with his commentary and family and we'll get on with the tour. 'It's been a bit of a slow process (finalising support staff), but that's okay. I've spoken to (Justin Holbrook and Trent Barrett) but we're still contemplating what the makeup of the staff will be.' Cameron Smith puts family and commentary first Speaking last month, Smith admitted he'd have to weigh-up what was best for his young family and role with Channel 9 when making a potential move into coaching. "I love my role with the commentary team at the moment, I've got three young kids as well, I'm up in Bundaberg watching my eldest play netball (tonight)," he said on Channel 9. "But it's a wonderful opportunity to be able to coach our country. I was lucky enough to play for Kangaroos many, many times. To be able to coach such a wonderful team full of wonderful footballers would be a great opportunity." It's not because they couldn't do it, it's just the workload," Walters said. "(Haas' decision) wasn't surprising to me. It's been on the table for probably 12 months. I'd like to have seen Payne playing for Australia, but I respect his decision. 'I said to him from the get-go when I got the job, 'Mate, whichever way you go, we've still got a strong relationship and that remains intact'. I'd like the opportunity to work with him again but he's chosen Samoa and I totally respect that." Injured Wallabies Slipper and Pietsch ruled out of second test against South Africa
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Australia prop James Slipper and winger Dylan Pietsch were ruled out of the second Rugby Championship test against South Africa in a double blow to the Wallabies' hopes on Sunday. Slipper reported concussion symptoms after the shock 38-22 win over the Springboks on Saturday in Johannesburg and failed a head injury check. Pietsch broke his jaw in a first-half tackle, not long after scoring Australia's first try. They returned home alongside flyhalf Ben Donaldson, whose adductor strain made him unavailable for the first test. Utility back Hamish Stewart has joined the Wallabies in Johannesburg, and winger Filipo Daugunu and prop Rhys van Nek will catch up with the squad in Cape Town, site of the second test on Saturday. No. 8 and captain Harry Wilson was forced from the field after a knee injury but Rugby Australia said he was walking more comfortably and staying in the republic. The injury to Slipper, the Wallabies' most capped player, means Aidan Ross could make his test debut for Australia three years after his sole test for New Zealand. Tom Robertson was another loosehead option.
