Student visa giant Study Group secures reprieve with new funding
Sky News has learnt that Study Group, which was acquired by the French private equity group Ardian in 2019, has sealed a deal which will see it become majority-owned by Intermediate Capital Group (ICG) and Bain Capital.
City sources said the two firms were injecting a substantial sum into the company, with Ardian remaining involved as a minority shareholder.
The recapitalisation of Study Group comes after a challenging period for the company, amid growing scrutiny over the number of foreign students who go on to claim asylum.
It emerged last year that more than 800 students for which it had secured visas in the UK had later claimed asylum.
Sources close to Study Group's financial restructuring insisted, however, that its new majority-owners were "highly optimistic" about its prospects.
The company is said to have won a number of significant new contracts recently, although details of these were unclear.
Responding to an enquiry from Sky News, a spokesperson for ICG said: "Bain Capital and ICG will increase their existing stake in leading international education provider, Study Group, partnering with existing shareholder, Ardian, who will retain a stake in the business.
"This new investment underpins Bain Capital and ICG's conviction in Study Group's ambitious growth programme and outstanding management team."
Ardian is said to have injected additional funding into the business on two separate occasions.
At the time of its acquisition of Study Group, it said it supported 30,000 students from more than 140 countries every year.
The company prepares international students for undergraduate courses at leading English-speaking universities by teaching them academic and language skills.
In 2023, it sold its Australian operations to Navitas, a multinational education group.
A spokesperson for Ardian has been contacted for comment.

Manchester Airport told to 'do more' on drop-off and pick-up fees
A government minister has written to Manchester Airport, raising concerns about its drop-off and collection fees. Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton MP Jim McMahon has called for a full review of signage and the appeals process for those who are fined. It comes after the RAC claimed that Manchester Airport was the most expensive UK airports on a 'cost-per-minute' basis, along with London Luton. Research shared by the company revealed that 11 out of 20 airports increased their drop off charges since last summer. However, drop- off fees at several airports, including Manchester, remain frozen. The current drop-off charge at all of the airport's three terminals is £5 for five minutes, increasing to £6.40 for up to 10 minutes, while those who take up to 30 minutes must pay £25. He has called for 'more to be done' to make sure there is fairness and transparency for people across the region to use the airport. He said: "Having an international airport - the 3rd busiest in the UK and the busiest outside of London - on our doorstep is fantastic for our borough. "It gives local people great access to places around the world for holidays and business, which goes unmatched in the vast majority of the country. "The money being invested into the Airport City project and the upgrades to terminals 2 & 3 is investment which we support. "However, it is important during this summer holiday season to raise concerns about the approach to charging for drop-off and collections at the airport terminals, and the impact on drivers who find themselves faced with unfair charges." In his letter, the MP calls for a 'full review' of signage approaching the airport, at the terminals, and immediately on arrival, an end to the practice of 'stacking up charges' and a review of the appeals process given that unsuccessful appeals increase penalties further. The minister also asked the airport to publish data on income from the drop-off and collection charges so that there is transparency on how much money is made through duplicate charges and late payments. The Manchester Evening News understands that the airport has responded to Mr McMahon and has been invited him to visit. A Manchester Airport spokesperson said: "Drop-off and pick-up charges help us to manage demand for access to our forecourts, where space is limited, and reduce traffic congestion around the site. "It means that the areas remain efficient even at busy times because people are not staying there for extended periods. "This means people can feel assured that if they wish to use our pick-up or drop-off facilities they will be able to do so quickly and effectively. "There are clear signs in and around the drop-off and pick-up areas that remind people to pay online or over the phone by midnight the day after their visit. "We also offer a completely free drop-off facility next to the nearby JetParks 1 car park. It is served by a 24-hour shuttle bus that runs every few minutes and takes less than six minutes to get to all three terminals."

Bugatti Is Sold Out Until 2029
The automotive industry is volatile. Emerging technologies, changing government regulations, tariffs, and fickle consumer trends make planning for the next model year a Herculean effort of hope and stress. It's why so many automakers play it safe with their products, but there are outliers, like Bugatti . Demand for the brand's newest hypercars is so high that any potential buyers will have to wait years for their car, if they can order one at all. And that's good for the bespoke automaker. Bugatti's design director, Frank Heyl, told CarBuzz that the brand has so many orders that it makes it easy for Bugatti to 'plan ahead.' 'It's all set,' he said. Heyl told the publication that finishing up Bolide production and beginning to build the Tourbillon would keep it busy for the next four years and that it's sold out until 2029. 'If you have this [financial stability] as a business owner, it works out very solid,' he said. That gives Bugatti plenty of time to figure out what comes after the Tourbillon , a hybrid hypercar with three electric motors and an 8.4-liter V-16 engine. It makes 1,800 horsepower , which can propel the car to 60 miles per hour in just 2.0 seconds. It also costs around $4 million to start, but good luck getting one. If you have the cash for that kind of performance, and haven't already placed your Tourbillon order, you'll have to set a reminder for 2029 to see what Bugatti cooks up next. The company has plenty of time to figure it out, and we're already excited to see it.
