Bar Nestor was always popular – but then it got really, really popular. People started posting it on social media (and yes, I'm one of those people), and it kicked off. It went from being 'a' place to go in San Sebastian, to being 'the' place to go in San Sebastian.
Hence, the queues. Hence, the fact I haven't been back in five or six years – I don't want to line up for hours for something I used to just walk in for.
This is just one example of something that is happening all over the world right now. Those little secrets don't stay secret for long.
You could have a favourite little restaurant (at home or abroad), a place you call into all the time, somewhere family-run, friendly. And then one day you will arrive and there will be a huge queue out the front. It will be there tomorrow, and the next day, and next week and maybe next year.

An influencer I follow, who has a very large social media account – almost a million followers – posted recently about a tiny local restaurant in Greece, on the island of Folegrandos. It's a modest place, run by an elderly couple who don't have a menu, barely even a kitchen. They just make beautiful Greek food each day, and serve it to whomever comes in.
This influencer gushed about how perfect it was, how charming. But people commented: Why are you telling everyone about this? The place will be overrun. It will never be the restaurant that you found ever again.
There's a question we all have to ask ourselves as travellers now. This used to be something only a certain few would have to ponder, travel writers, celebrities, those with a following. But now everyone has to think: should I reveal my secrets?

It's not just restaurants either, it's viewpoints, natural phenomena, cultural attractions, entire towns, cities or even countries.
You discover them and you want to share them. You're excited about them. And yes, there's some ego at play here – look at what I found. Look at how amazing it is.
There's an urge to shout it from the rooftops, to tell the world. You might have only a modest following on social media of family and friends, but these things can go viral quickly, they can reach the world.
And what happens then? It can be good or bad, or both. It can save a struggling business. It can bring tourism dollars to a part of the world that desperately needs it. Or, it can bring hordes of people to a place that was only ever good because it didn't have hordes of people, because it was charming, because it was quiet.
I think about this all the time, but you should too. What is the effect of calling attention to a venue, a business, an attraction, a place? Will it benefit or will it be harmed? Will the extra attention be welcome, or will it destroy the very thing you're trying to spread the word about?
That influencer who posted about the Greek restaurant has since deleted his post. It's far too late, however, for Bar Nestor.

Bali villa raided by thief who stole Aussie's Airpods
A mischievous and unsuspecting thief has caused chaos at a luxury villa in Bali after raiding an Aussie's room and throwing their Airpods out the window. Aussie Jazz Walsh, who describes herself as a 'wellness corporate girlie', was enjoying a relaxing massage at a luxury resort in Uluwatu when the raid occurred. Ms Walsh saw the funny side of the raid, sharing the video on TikTok and revealing in the comments that the monkeys stole her Airpods but left the case behind. The video was flooded with comments, many praising the actions of the the hotel attendant. 'Why are Balinese are too cute,' one person commented. 'Omg he's so cute, I'm sorry I laughed. I hope the monkeys didn't take anything too valuable 😭,' wrote another. The four-star resort is located steps away from the popular Bingin Beach, and features a tree-top terrace, garden and cliffside restaurant. The Uluwatu area is renowned for thieving monkeys; the monkeys who have taken residence at Uluwatu Temple even featured on David Attenborough's documentary, Planet Earth III, for their developed skills in bartering. Many unlucky tourists were filmed having their sunglasses and mobile phones taken by the long-tailed macaques who would only return the desirable human items in return for a banana or chocolate bar. Parents dump 10-year-old son at airport in Barcelona and board plane after finding his passport had expired
Nothing was going to stop these parents getting away on a holiday. Not even their young son having an out of date passport — so they left him at the airport. The parents abandoned their 10-year-old on finding out that his Spanish passport had expired on checking in at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. Desperate for a holiday, they boarded their flight anyway, hoping a relative would eventually turn up to pick up their boy. With his mum and dad preparing to jet off, the boy was comforted by an air-operations coordinator only known as Lilian. She took to TikTok to blast the parents. 'The kid told police that his parents were on the plane, on their way to their home country for vacation,' she said in Spanish in the video. 'The explanation given to the authorities was that the child was travelling with an expired passport from Spain and needed a travel visa. 'Since he didn't have a visa, they left the kid in the terminal and called a relative to pick him up. 'I didn't see it as normal. The police didn't see it as normal either.' Lilian went on to say that it was one of the most bizarre experiences she had ever had. Directing her question to the parents, she said: 'Hallucinating? 'I'm an air traffic controller and as a controller, I've seen a lot of things but this has been completely surreal. 'I'm amazed to think how parents could possibly leave their 10-year-old son at the terminal because he can't travel due to documentation issues.' Lilian continued to berate the parents, wondering how they could be so selfish. 'They call a relative, who might take half an hour, an hour or three hours, and they calmly board the flight and leave the child behind,' she said. 'As a mother, I'd freak out.'
