New Zealand loose forward Wallace Sititi has been ruled out of the Rugby Championship opener against Argentina while still recovering from ankle surgery, coach Scott Robertson said on Tuesday.
Sititi, who was the All Blacks Player of the Year in his debut 2024 season, missed the entire France series with the injury and had hoped to be back for Saturday's match in Cordoba.
He faces at least another week on the sidelines, though, opening the door for a potential recall for Peter Lakai or a debut for Simon Parker.
Robertson, who names his squad on Thursday, may opt for continuity in the starting back row, though, having deployed enforcer Ardie Savea at number eight and Du'Plessis Kirifi at openside flanker in the third and final test against France after Luke Jacobson was a late withdrawal due to injury.
The All Blacks won that match 29-19 in Hamilton to whitewash the French 3-0.
New Zealand have lost three out of their last 10 matches to the Pumas, including last year's Rugby Championship clash in Wellington, but have never been beaten in Argentina in 40 years of tests against the South Americans.
Robertson said the 38-30 upset in Wellington was on the minds of his players.

In the March 13, 2024 episode of Kelce and his brother Jason's New Heights podcast, Kelce gave a glowing review of his visit between March 7 and 9, calling the city state 'high-tech' and 'futuristic', exceedingly 'well planned out' and 'more interesting' to him than Sydney, Australia, where he also travelled to for The Eras Tour. He also made nods to the diverse cuisine and the '100 deg F' (38 deg C) temperatures. Czech man triumphs over 2.68m catfish after a 50-minute battle

A man in the Czech Republic rewrote his own national record after catching a 2.68m catfish in what he described as a 50-minute 'intense battle'. Mr Jakub Vagner, 43, caught the freshwater fish on Aug 2 at Vranov Reservoir, 200km south of the Czech capital Prague. Pictures on his social media accounts showed him with the massive catfish, which is slightly longer than the one he caught about 10 months ago. Mr Vagner, host of National Geographic Channel's Fish Warrior, spotted the fish in the early morning while he was on his boat. He then cast his custom-made rod towards the fish and waited. 'Ten minutes passed and nothing happened. Suddenly, it turned and went straight into my trap,' he told What's The Jam website. 'After almost 50 minutes, it was lying half-tired next to my boat. I was shaking, completely done,' he said. With the help of his friend, Mr Vagner took a few pictures with the enormous fish, and released it back into the waters. 'A beautiful, almost flawless fish, which has potential to grow even further,' he wrote on his Instagram. In October 2024, Mr Vagner set the national record when he caught a 2.64m catfish with a fishing rod at the same reservoir.

LOS ANGELES – As he seeks his third BMW Championship title this week, Patrick Cantlay's daily routine begins long before he steps to the first tee. Managing a longstanding back issue, the American sees his physical therapist 2½ hours before his tee time and then visits his trainer in the gym. 'For me it's all about putting deposits in the bank. I want to do all the preventative things possible to make sure I feel good every day, and that way I don't have to push the panic button when something starts to hurt,' the 33-year-old told reporters on Aug 12. 'I think, if I can do all the good things all the time as a practice, as a discipline, as a habit, then I don't have to worry about my back hurting because it never really gets in a spot where it can hurt.' Cantlay, the 2020-21 FedExCup champion, heads into the second leg of the FedExCup play-offs and final weekend of Ryder Cup qualifying after a T9 finish at the St. Jude Championship in Memphis last weekend. He finished 27-under to win the 2021 BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, the site of this week's tournament. He made it back-to-back BMW wins at the Wilmington (Del.) Country Club in 2022. Cantlay lived up to his 'Patty Ice' nickname to capture the 2021 event, holding off Bryson DeChambeau to win on their sixth play-off hole. The course at Caves Valley has since moved from a par 72 to a par 70. 'Yeah, I've heard they've made some changes to the golf course, and I think this time of year it really all depends what kind of weather we get,' Cantlay added. 'If it rains a lot and there's not a lot of wind, it will play easier. If it gets firm and fast conditions, a golf course like Caves Valley could be extremely difficult. 'Especially now hearing – this is the first time I've heard it's moved to a par 70. You get a long golf course and make it par 70, it's most likely going to be difficult.' Cantlay ranks 15th in the Ryder Cup rankings with three automatic qualifying spots to be determined this weekend, with missed cuts at this season's last three Majors costing him dearly. He is No. 24 in the Official World Golf Ranking. The nine-time PGA Tour winner has not collected a trophy since his 2022 BMW Championship victory, but he will stick with his daily regimen to stay healthy and in contention. 'We play so much golf so often and practise so hard that we need to make sure we're doing enough preventative things to allow our bodies to do that work every day,' he reiterated. 'It's just something I committed to, like you say, as a result of having some back injuries in the past. Fortunately, I've felt good for a long time now, and by now it's just a habit.' REUTERS
