NCC expedition team successfully scales Mt Everest
The team included 10 NCC cadets -- five boys and five girls -- along with four officers, two Junior Commissioned Officers, one Girl Cadet Instructor and 10 Non-Commissioned Officers, a Defence Ministry statement said.
The selected cadets al novices were chosen from across the country. They underwent a strict selection and training process. As part of their preparation, they undertook a pre-Everest Expedition at Mt Abi Gamin. From this group, 15 cadets were selected to undergo winter and technical training at the Army Mountaineering Institute, Siachen Base Camp. After months of training, ten cadets were selected for the Mt Everest expedition.
The team, comprising youngest climbers with an average age of 19 years, soon became the centre of attraction and were noted for their fitness and discipline during acclimatisation training at various stages of the ascent. Sherpas of Nepal also praised the NCC team for their physical readiness and morale.
Despite facing challenging weather and terrain, the cadets successfully unfurled the Tricolour and the NCC Flag atop the world's highest peak, representing national pride and youth power.
The expedition was flagged-off by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh from New Delhi on April 3. This is the third ascent of Mt Everest by the NCC, following previous expeditions in 2013 and 2016.

Boland backs Australia to thrive against England in Ashes if wickets stay consistent
Veteran seamer Scott Boland has backed Australia to thrive against England in this year's Ashes if wickets in the country stay consistent and bowler-friendly to counter the visitors' aggressive 'Bazball' approach. The five-match Ashes series starts in Perth on November 21. "They're going to play aggressively. If the wickets stay similar to what they've been over the last few years, I think we're going to be in the game all the time." "There were little parts of the England tour last time, when the ball sort of moved around and favoured the bowlers, but generally over there, the wickets have been a bit flatter. And then when you come to Australia, certainly the last three or four years, they've been bowler friendly," Boland was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo, on the sidelines of making 100 days to go for the Ashes in Melbourne. Boland claimed 18 wickets at an average of 9.55 in his debut Ashes series against a pre-Bazball England team in 2021/22. But he managed to pick only two wickets at 115.50 in last year's Ashes in England. With Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood ahead of him in the pecking order, Boland stated he is prepared to give his best if given the opportunity. "I've obviously thought about it a lot since it happened in 2023. But I still think there were times in England where I bowled pretty well and just didn't get a wicket. I'm a better bowler than I was back then. I'm going to be in our conditions that I know really, really well. I'm hoping to put in some good performances," he added. He also believes Australia may not field a four-man fast-bowling attack during the Ashes, citing Nathan Lyon's effectiveness at home and the likely availability of all-rounder Cameron Green as a seam bowling option. "I hope so, but probably not in Australia. Nathan's one of the best spin bowlers in the world, so I think he can bowl in any conditions. He's probably been the glue to our bowling line-up over the last few years." "And then I probably see Greeny (Cameron Green) coming back and bowling a lot more, he obviously hasn't bowled for 12 months, so that probably hurts the chances of four quicks as well," he added.

Cincinnati Open: Sinner plays through fire alarm to beat Diallo
Ohio (USA), Aug 12 (UNI) World number one Jannik Sinner played through a fire alarm to beat Gabriel Diallo and reach the fourth round of the Cincinnati Open. The alarm began to sound and lights started flashing in the second game of the second set but the pair agreed to play through it after a delay of several minutes. Sinner, 23, remained composed and booked his spot in the last 16 with a 6-2 7-6 (8-6) victory against the Canadian. "It was a very difficult day at the office," Sinner said. "You have to find the balance against these big servers. I struggled with that at times today. "But I need tough matches like this, I'm happy I got one before the [US Open] Grand Slam." The third-round tie started later than expected because of a 75-minute power cut, which cut the TV feed and left the venue without electronic line calling. Sinner was broken in his opening service game but hit back with three successive breaks of his own to wrap up the set. The second was much more competitive and went to a tie-break after staying on serve, with defending champion Sinner holding on for victory. Next up for Sinner is French qualifier Adrian Mannarino as the Italian looks to build momentum for the US Open later this month. The four-time Grand Slam champion has already won the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year, according to a BBC news. UNI BM
