Encounter breaks out between security forces, terrorists in Udhampur
An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday morning, according to the security officials.
According to the official, the joint operation, launched under the name "Operation Bihali," is currently in progress.
The White Knight Corps of the Indian Army said, "Op BIHALI. Based on specific intelligence, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu Kashmir Police in the Bihali area of Basantgarh. Contact has been established with #terrorists. The operation is currently in progress.
Officials confirmed that contact was established with the terrorists, and the gunfight began shortly afterwards.
"The encounter started early in the morning, and the operation is going on," said Bhim Sen Tuti, IGP Jammu Zone, while speaking to the mediapersons about the ongoing operation in Basantgarh.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Security forces conducted a joint mock drill at the Baltal base camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal in preparation for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to start on July 3.
The exercise was conducted under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ganderbal.
The exercise saw coordinated participation from multiple agencies, including the Jammu and Kashmir Police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), 49 Battalion CRPF, the Indian Army, Health Department, and Fire and Emergency Services.

The group of four Pakistan-based JeM terrorists was confronted on Thursday in the Bihali area of Basantgarh by a joint team of the Army and police. A gunfight followed, in which one terrorist—identified as Haider alias Maulvi from Pakistan—was killed. Notably, Basantgarh is a known infiltration corridor for terrorists entering India from the International Border in Kathua. The search for the remaining three is ongoing. 'The search operation is still on. The situation will become clear after the weather clears. It is a group of four terrorists. We had been monitoring these terrorists for the past year,' Tuti said. Security heightened amid Amarnath Yatra preps Security forces have conducted mock drills on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway ahead of the Yatra, which has historically been a major target for Pakistani terror groups. The first batch of pilgrims is scheduled to leave from Jammu on July 2. According to the Army's White Knight Corps, the terrorists were moving through forested terrain and using caves to avoid detection. Officials said the group was helped by overground workers (OGWs) for months. At least five OGWs have been arrested recently for aiding them with food and shelter. Sources said one of the JeM operatives being tracked is a local man who had returned from Pakistan and is now believed to be helping infiltrators. The encounter comes just weeks after heightened tensions in the region. On April 22, 26 people were killed in Pahalgam in a terror attack. That prompted India to launch Operation Sindoor on May 6, targeting terror camps. A short conflict followed between India and Pakistan from May 7 to 10 before ceasefire understanding.

4 JeM terrorists trapped in J-K's Udhampur
Jammu: Four Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists being tracked for a year are trapped in a forested area in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district with security forces attempting to neutralise them in rain and fog, officials said on Thursday. The encounter broke out when a joint search party of the army and police launched a search operation, based on a specific intelligence, in remote Bihali area of Basantgarh in the district this morning. Reinforcements have been rushed in and a massive search operation is going on despite bad weather. 'Contact was established with the terrorists around 8.30 am... they are believed to be four in number and we have been tracking (this group) for the last one year,' Inspector General of Police, Jammu range, Bhim Sen Tuti told reporters on the sidelines of a function here. He said a search operation was going on despite foggy conditions and the real picture would emerge once the weather improves. Officials added that the trapped terrorists are members of the Pakistan-based JeM and were found hiding near Karoor nallah by the joint search party led by the army's para commandos.

The IGP further said that adequate security arrangements were made for the ensuing Amarnath Yatra. 'This time around, we have got more paramilitary companies from the Centre,' he said. Tuti further informed that this year there shall be road opening parties on the Pathankot -Jammu national highway as well. The Jammu IGP also requested Amarnath pilgrims, who wish to start their Yatra from Jammu, to join only the official convoys for a safe and secure journey from Yatri Niwas base camp at Bhagwati Nagar. 'Such pilgrims should avoid independent travel,' he added. The Basantgarh encounter comes at a time when hardly a week has left for the annual Amarnath pilgrimage that begins July 3. The first batch of pilgrims from Jammu will be flagged off on July 2 for Pahalgam and Baltal-based camps. Meanwhile, security forces in Udhampur conducted a mock drill on Jammu-Srinagar national highway (NH 44) in view of the pilgrimage that has always remained a 'high value' target for the Pakistani terrorists. On April 22, Pakistani terrorists had attacked unarmed tourists in Pahalgam, leaving 26 dead and scores injured. The attack had compelled India to launch Operation Sindoor on May 6, resulting in strikes on terror camps. Consequently, India and Pakistan indulged in a conflict from May 7 to 10 before US president Donald Trump claimed he enforced a ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed countries.
