Mubadala Capital Finalises Take-Private of CI Financial

CI Financial has been officially taken private by Mubadala Capital following the completion of all necessary approvals, effective 12 August 2025. The deal, structured under a statutory plan of arrangement governed by Ontario's Business Corporations Act, sees Mubadala Capital purchasing all outstanding common shares of CI Financial for C$32 per share, valuing the company's equity at approximately C$4.7 billion and implying an enterprise value near C$12.1 billion.
The transaction adds CI Financial to Mubadala Capital's expanding roster of asset management businesses, bringing its total assets under advice, management, or administration to over US$430 billion. CEO Kurt MacAlpine, who is rolling over all his equity into the continuing entity, emphasised that CI has gained a partner aligned with its growth aspirations, one that will help accelerate its expansion and unlock greater value for clients.
CI Financial will remain headquartered in Toronto and continue to operate under its existing structure, branding and leadership. Mubadala Capital has committed to maintaining its Canadian operations and preserving its independence from Mubadala's broader portfolio.

By integrating CI Financial, Mubadala Capital strengthens its position in private wealth management and continues its push into North American markets. The firm's strategic expansion aligns with its ambitions to build a robust, globally diversified asset management platform covering private equity, credit, special opportunities, and wealth services.
CI Financial's board, including a special committee of independent directors, had unanimously supported the transaction, highlighting the premium of C$32 per share—about 33 per cent above the prior closing price and 58 per cent above the 60-day volume-weighted average—as an excellent outcome for shareholders and a source of certainty amid volatile markets.
With regulatory approvals now secured, the deal shifts from strategy to execution. CI gains access to substantial long-term capital and Mubadala's global network, positioning it to scale key initiatives such as the expansion of Corient—the U. S. subsidiary—with its distinctive private partnership model preserved.
This landmark transaction marks one of the largest take-private deals in Canada in recent times. It signals Mubadala Capital's commitment to active participation in the private capital and wealth management space, building on previous large-scale investments such as Fortress Investment Group and others.
Emerging trends point to growing interest from sovereign wealth funds and private investors in acquiring established financial services firms. The CI deal serves as a case study in leveraging private ownership to provide operational flexibility, strategic focus, and capital stability while benefiting shareholders through a significant premium.

Given the UAE's partnerships with both Western and Asian powers and its role in humanitarian and conflict mediation, the institute is well-positioned to serve as a bridge between regional stakeholders and the global community, Idris said. As part of its engagement efforts, RSDI recently hosted a high-level panel examining the possible impact of US President Donald Trump's return on US-China dynamics and regional security frameworks. Discussions pointed out that the renewed Trump presidency would open new avenues for US–East Asia cooperation, particularly in sectors like semiconductors and renewable energy. Building on its foundation of dialogue and collaboration, RSDI is expanding its impact through a series of pilot initiatives designed to deepen regional security cooperation. 'In 2025, we are set to launch the Annual Middle East Security (AMES) Conference, a collaboration with TRENDS Advisory and Research. Then in 2026, we plan to launch the Middle East Defence Outlook Conference (MEDOC) as an avenue for researchers, policymakers, decision-makers to convene and discuss defence modernisation in the region.'

Spot gold fell 0.1% to $3,352.65 per ounce as of 9:15 a.m. ET (1315 GMT). U.S. gold futures for December delivery were down 0.2% to $3,400.60. The dollar index gained 0.2% from an over two-week low, making bullion less attractive for non-U.S. buyers, while benchmark 10-year yields edged up from a one-week low. Stronger U.S. wholesale price data tempered bets on a larger, half-point cut next month. Traders are now leaning toward a quarter-point move with another in October, reinforcing comments from Fed's Mary Daly that such a large cut is not needed. The Labor Department reported the producer price index rose 3.3% year-on-year in July, beating forecasts of 2.5%. Weekly jobless claims also came in lower than expected, at 224,000 versus 228,000 forecast. "Gold trades lower as the stronger than expected U.S. PPI print may lower rate cut hopes (expectations) as they feed into a higher Core PCE inflation print for July as well, likely keeping the Federal Reserve cautious on rate cuts," said Saxo Bank's head of commodity strategy, Ole Hansen. "Overall, the print does not alter our bullish view on gold as the Fed eventually will have to choose between fighting inflation or supporting the economy." Gold, a traditional refuge in times of economic or geopolitical strain, tends to benefit from low interest rates. Investors also kept an eye on geopolitical risks. U.S. President Donald Trump warned of "severe consequences" if Russian President Vladimir Putin rejects a Ukraine peace proposal at their upcoming summit, hinting at a subsequent meeting with Ukraine's leader. A jump in U.S. wholesale prices last month looks to have all but erased the possibility that the Federal Reserve will deliver a jumbo-sized half-point interest-rate cut in September, though expectations for a quarter-point cut next month, followed by another in October, remain intact. U.S. producer prices increased a more-than-expected 0.9% in July from June amid a surge in the costs of goods but also of services like machinery and equipment wholesaling, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Thursday. The increase may get passed on to consumers, who so far have not experienced a strong overall increase in prices even as the Trump administration has ratcheted up tariffs. "We expect a stronger pass-through of levies into consumer prices in coming months with inflation likely to climb modestly over the second half of 2025," Nationwide Senior Economist Ben Ayers said. The rise in services inflation will be particularly worrisome to Fed policymakers like Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee, who said on Wednesday that he's on alert for signs that inflation is seeping into prices beyond those for goods affected directly by tariffs. An increase in services inflation, also evident in the consumer price data released on Wednesday, suggests that inflation could become more of a persistent problem, he said. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who is leading the search for a replacement for Fed Chair Jerome Powell, has been pushing for a bigger rate cut next month, citing tame inflation, though on Thursday he said the Fed could start with a quarter-point move. Before the data, traders put about a 3% probability on the idea of a half-point rate cut, with most bets firmly on a quarter-point cut. After the data, traders erased bets on a 50-basis-point reduction in rates. San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly, who signaled earlier this week that she is increasingly open to the idea of a rate cut given the softening in the labor market, told the Wall Street Journal in a story published on Thursday that a 50-basis-point rate cut would signal an urgency about the job market that she does not feel.
