Cole Tapper, crew repeat as champions of Governor's Cup regatta

Los Angeles Times13 hours ago
The Governor's Cup international youth match racing championship has never had a three-time winner, but Australian skipper Cole Tapper did join a long list of two-time champions in defending his title on Sunday afternoon.
Tapper is now the 14th skipper to win twice in the 58-year history of the regatta.
Balboa Yacht Club's Argyle Campbell (1967-1968) and Andy Rose (1969-1970) were the original members of that club, each winning in back-to-back years like Tapper.
Governor's Cup competitors may not have reached their 23rd birthday by the end of the event. At 22, Tapper will not have the opportunity to go for a third consecutive title.
'I think the team had to get pretty honest with ourselves at the start of this week that we probably weren't performing where we needed to be,' said Tapper, who flew to New York Sunday evening to compete in the Oakcliff International at Oyster Bay. 'We love coming here, and we put a lot into preparing, but we showed up and we were kind of off our game, to be honest. It took our coach, Jordan [Reece], to make us very accountable about what we were doing.'
Neither championship came without its hiccups, or 'sea monsters,' as the commentating team of Tom Ehman and Rose like to call unforeseen events on the water.
Tapper and his crew of Jack Frewin and Hamish Vass showed their mettle in a backdoor sweep of two-time champion Jeffrey Petersen (Balboa Yacht Club) in the 2024 final.
The adversity in the most recent regatta came early, the defending champions struggling to find consistency during the double round robin.
'It's very nice because it gives you a lot of self belief,' Tapper said of returning with the same crew. 'You know that you can do it, so there was that. That, I think, got us through when we were not sailing so well at the start of this week. We were looking like we were going to come through fourth out of the round robins, and we managed to get into third.
'To have those troubles and then know, 'Hang on, we've done this before — we can do this,' it's really nice that we could lean on each other.'
Alas, they finished strong with a pair of 3-1 series victories, against Josh Hyde, 21, of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in the semifinals and over Justin Callahan, 22, of the Miami-based Biscayne Bay Yacht Club in the finals.
The victors were serenaded with an enthusiastic chant of 'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie,' to which they replied, 'Oi, Oi, Oi,' as their boat was towed back into the harbor. A cannon was also fired.
Callahan, who has aspirations of competing in the two-person dinghy events at the 2028 Olympics, had less experience in match racing, but he earned the right to choose his semifinal opponent as the top finisher in the double round robin with a record of 20-2.
In the latter stages of the regatta, Callahan received a surprise when his twin brother, Mitchell, turned up.
'To see my brother there, that was quite the best surprise I could have ever asked for,' Callahan said. 'It put a smile on my face. Having him here the last few days really meant the world to me. I think this is one of the longest times I haven't seen him, so it was great having him here, supporting us. … Having a brother is truly special. We sailed this regatta together here two years ago, and we came in fourth.'
Newport Harbor Yacht Club's Morgan Pinckney, 20, won the petit final, 2-0, over Hyde, placing third overall in the competition.
Balboa Yacht Club's Siena Nichols, 16, the youngest skipper in the field, finished in seventh place.

Bucs' Teddy Bridgewater reflects on suspension from coaching Miami Northwestern High: 'Those players became my sons'

Teddy Bridgewater retired from the NFL in 2023 after 10 seasons, in part to focus on his two sons. In his eyes, he inherited many more when he took over as the head coach of his alma mater, Miami Northwestern High School, in his native South Florida. "I'm protective, and I'm a father first before anything," a now-32-year-old Bridgewater told reporters Wednesday during his first media appearance since signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this week. "When I decided to coach, those players became my sons. And I want to make sure that I just protect them in the best way that I can." [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Being what Bridgewater calls "a cheerful giver" unfortunately ran him into trouble with the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA). Bridgewater revealed on Facebook in July that he covered Uber rides, meals and recovery services for his players last season, a year that culminated in Miami Northwestern winning a Florida Class 3A state championship. In that post, Bridgewater asked fans to donate and help him take care of those expenses this time around. Word apparently got to the FHSAA, and then Miami Northwestern had to respond, ultimately suspending Bridgewater from coaching for allegedly providing impermissible benefits to his players. Bridgewater, who initially unretired from the NFL to rejoin the Detroit Lions late last season, is spending the 2025 season in the Bucs' quarterback room as a veteran voice and experienced backup. The former first-round draft pick reflected Wednesday on his suspension from Miami Northwestern, and on his motivation behind doing what he did to help his players last year. "Not enough blessings in tough neighborhood, and sometimes things can happen when kids are walking home and different things like that," Bridgewater said. "I just try to protect them, give them a ride home instead of them having to take those dangerous walks. But I just want people to continue to see me for the person that I've been, from the time I arrived in the NFL, from the time that I arrived at the University of Louisville. Just a humble guy with a good heart and a cheerful giver." According to the U.S. News & World Report, 75% of students at Miami Northwestern are considered "economically disadvantaged" and 72% qualify for the "Free Lunch Program" under the National School Lunch Act. Bridgewater was asked Wednesday about the possibility of changes to FHSAA rules. "I guess in due time those changes will happen," he said. "But until then, man, I can't change who I am because of the rules. I have a big heart. I get it from my mom. And I just always said that I was once those kids. I know what it's like to be in their shoes. I know what it's like to walk those halls at Miami Northwestern and to have your stomach growling and rumbling at 12 o'clock in the afternoon because you didn't have any lunch money or you don't get the free lunch. So I can't change who I am. I'll still give to those kids just because, man, I know what it's like. When I say 'give,' it's not even about money. It's about my time and my presence. Because a lot of times you see your idol on TV and it's like, 'Man, I wonder what it's like to be that person.' But when they see me in the flesh, and they see how I'm an open-spirited person and I'm happy I'm around them and they fit right in with me and I fit in with them — it's just hope." When Bridgewater mentioned "hope," he was referring to the source of inspiration he feels he provides to students at Miami Northwestern. He called his experience with those kids as "the way that I feed my soul." "I think now that I'm back in the league, there's actually going to be extra motivation for them as well because they'll play a game on Friday night and probably get to drive across the state and come watch the Bucs win and see coach on the sidelines," Bridgewater said. "So it's like, 'Man, Coach is just continuing to just serve as motivation and continuing to influence us in every way possible. He's showing us that he can make it to the NFL. He's showing us that he can coach, he's showing us that there are different avenues of life that you can take.' And I'm hoping that they take notice of that."

'That kind of humility is rare in players who've been at the very top' - Inter Miami's Javier Mascherano praises Luis Suárez after 3–1 win over Pumas in Leagues Cup

Luis Suárez scored and provided two assists Inter Miami now sit on eight points Rodrigo De Paul netted his first goal as a Heron WHAT HAPPENED? Following Inter Miami's 3-1 win over Pumas at Chase Stadium - a result that secured their spot in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals - head coach Javier Mascherano took a moment to highlight the leadership, commitment, and work ethic of star striker Luis Suarez. The Urugyan legend has come under criticism for his lack of scoring this season, but he continues to lead the way for Miami with MLS assists at 10. The 38-year-old ended a nine-game scoring drought across all competitions in Wednesday's win and also added two assists in a standout performance. 'He's always thinking about the team. Even when he doesn't have the ball, he works to reorganize. That kind of humility is rare in players who've been at the very top. I'm really happy for him,' said Mascherano. Mascherano shared similar sentiments toward veterans Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. Their strong performances were even more valuable given the absence of Lionel Messi, who missed the match due to injury. 'They're always looking to help the team - and help me,' Mascherano said. 'I had the chance to play alongside them, and they're incredibly smart. They understand what we need. Today, we asked Busquets to shift into a back three, and he did it instantly. You don't even need to look at the bench when you can make tactical adjustments with the players on the field.' With the win over Pumas, the Herons reached eight points and currently sit atop the MLS group standings, officially securing their spot in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals. WHAT JAVIER MASCHERANO SAID As for Rodrigo De Paul, who netted his first goal for the club just a week after coming to South Florida, Mascherano was impressed by his quick impact and attitude. 'Rodrigo's equalizer came at a great time - it gave us a sense of calm going into halftime," Mascherano said. "We were clearly the better team in the second half. To play three matches in seven days, coming straight from vacation, with that level of effort and energy - it says a lot. He's already making a big difference for us.' DID YOU KNOW? With Inter Miami's 3-1 win over Pumas, all four of Liga MX's so-called 'big clubs' - América, Chivas, Cruz Azul, and Pumas - have officially been eliminated in the group stage. These teams, known for their rich history and massive fanbases, are now out of the 2025 Leagues Cup. WHAT NEXT FOR INTER MIAMI? The Herons will face Orlando City this Sunday at Chase Stadium in an MLS matchup.

Why these WRs are must-haves in every fantasy draft

Yahoo Fantasy analyst Matt Harmon and contributor Chris Allen dive into the "fantasy film room" to identify players they cannot live without this fantasy season. View more Video Transcript Welcome to the Fantasy Film Room presented by Toyota, the official automotive partner of the NFL. For today's film room, we are offering our final draft blueprint for success. This is the guy we do not want to leave drafts without. Jaylen Waddle. Give me Jaylen Waddle. I don't care that last season was a complete disaster for him. I want to see a full season of him healthy. I want to see a full season. I think everybody wants to see a full season of Tua Tagovailoa healthy. It's also the same offense that was passing more often, almost 39 dropbacks per game for Tua once he came back. That passing pie grew. We saw Jay Waddle still have a fairly decent a rear share. And of course, no Johnny Smith that's going to be involved. And I mean, this is more subjective than anything else, but with all the chatter that Tyreek Hill's been putting out there, how much is he gonna really be involved in this passing game in 2025 anyway? So, I'd say the beef is more qualitative than anything else, but still, we're not that far behind from seeing Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill be top 10 wide receivers. That was 2022. If we can see both of them be healthy this upcoming season, he's a guy that I do not want to leave my drafts with because I know that the Miami passing game is something that we've tried to target in years past. Just got to get the health part in check, but I believe that's going to be the case for this upcoming season. I'm all in on picking this year. I think he is the most mispriced player in fantasy right now, still going outside the top 30 receivers, right around like wide receiver 31. I've got him ranked almost 12 spots ahead of that. Again, I'm uncomfortably high on the George Pickens situation. And again, I'm telling you, man, it makes me uncomfortable. But I, but listen, the biggest reason, again, this is like, get in the film room here. George Pickens took a big step forward last year as an individual player with a career-best 72.8% success rate versus man, 77.6% success rate versus press, which is an 83rd percentile score. And reception perception really took a big step forward as a man press beater. He's a perfect fit in the vacated X receiver role for the Dallas Cowboys. And like, again, this is a guy that's put it in the box score. He ranks 17th among wide receivers in yards per route run over the last two years combined. Now his routes, his targets, his catchable targets are all going to go up in a likely pass-heavy offense with Dak Prescott. I think he could be one of, if not the most productive #2 receivers in the league as long as he's locked in. He's got every incentive to, to, to be locked in. So, Chris, at times I've been mixed in, mixed on picking, certainly in fantasy and even in real life. Uh, but this year, after the improvement that I watched last year, and again, him being in a new situation, I, I'm, I'm uncomfortably high on George Pickens. Close
