Outraged Fans Call for Umpire Jordan Baker's Firing After Blue Jays-Twins Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Major League Baseball has all but made it clear that the Automated Ball-Strike System isn't coming to the regular season anytime soon.

Veteran umpire Jordan Baker might be the latest to make league officials reconsider that stance.
The Umpire Auditor X/Twitter account found that Baker missed 19 calls during Friday's Toronto Blue Jays-Minnesota Twins game. Baker notably struck out and subsequently ejected pinch-hitter Ryan Jeffers in the eighth inning after arguing a low strike.
Jeffers represented the tying run in the Blue Jays' eventual 6-4 victory.
The Umpire Scorecard account reported that Baker called 132 of 149 pitches (88.6%) correctly, the 15th-worst performance of any umpire this year. However, both accounts agreed that the Jeffers incident marked the game's most significant missed call.

Whether Baker missed 17 or 19 missed calls, social media users demanded the league fire the 43-year-old ump.
"Fire all the umps," one fan wrote. "Bring on the computers."
Added another: "Cheat ump that deserves to be fired."
Numerous users argued that Baker's height, at 6 feet 7 inches, could impact his ability to call balls and strikes accurately. Baker is the tallest active MLB umpire, and he's correctly called just over 94% of pitches in 12 games this year.

'He is notorious for missing pitches below the knees,' an X user argued. 'But [the Major League Baseball Umpires Association] ignores this problem & he continues to have trouble calling the low pitches.'

'He's clearly positioned too low,' commented another. 'His head is below the catchers. How does he expect to see those low pitches accurately?'
Unfortunately for the Twins, they've been involved in two of the worst umpire performances thus far. Adrian Johnson missed 23 of 130 calls (nearly 17.7%) in the Twins' 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on May 10.
'But he won't be punished fined or suspended for incompetence,' read one reply.

Florida State Lands Commitment from Four-Star Wide Receiver

Florida State Lands Commitment from Four-Star Wide Receiver originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Mike Norvell's Seminoles notched a big recruit today, earning a commitment from four-star wide receiver Brandon Bennett, according to Hayes Fawcett of On3 Recruits. Bennett had 25 offers and had visited Georgia before ultimately choosing to play in Tallahassee. Denzel Clarke Makes Spectacular, Spider-Man-Like Catch In Athletics-Angels Game

Oakland Athletics rookie center fielder Denzel Clarke stunned fans Monday with a jaw-dropping, acrobatic catch that robbed Los Angeles Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel of what would have been his fourth home run of the season. ESPN reported that Schanuel hit an 86 mph splitter deep into center field in the bottom of the first inning. Clarke, 25, leaped over the wall to make a spectacular catch and prevent the home run. Advertisement Athletics pitcher Grant Holman looked in awe while Schanuel stared blankly, unable to believe what had just happened at Angel Stadium. Clarke celebrated after landing safely with the ball in his glove, completing the out. 'Found my distance between the wall and just did what the ball told me to do. Just go up there and get it.' How does Denzel Clarke prepare for each game? According to the outlet, Clarke warms up before the first game of each road series by heading to the outfield during batting practice to time his steps from the warning track to the wall. The routine helps improve his overall speed when chasing down deep drives and continuing to make highlight-reel catches early in his career. Advertisement 'I always say the first play in my first time playing a new ballpark is going to break the ice,' Clarke explained. 'Crazy play to break the ice.' 'It was probably one of the greatest catches I've ever seen ' Monday's play echoed a home run robbery Clarke made a few weeks ago during a return to his hometown of Toronto to face the Blue Jays. He scaled the center-field wall at Rogers Centre to make another acrobatic catch, this time off a drive by catcher Alejandro Kirk. 'I was trying to just check it out,' Clarke said, per 'I always love seeing if my route was good or if I timed it up well. Everything came together on that catch, so I was super happy about it.' Advertisement Athletics pitcher Mike Spence praised his teammate for the outstanding catch. 'It was probably one of the greatest catches I've ever seen,' Spence said. 'After I gave up that hit, I was kind of like, 'Oh, crap.' Then I look up, and I see Spider-Man up the wall. It was pretty incredible. It shows how great of an athlete he is out there. I gave him a big hug in the dugout.' The post Denzel Clarke Makes Spectacular, Spider-Man-Like Catch In Athletics-Angels Game appeared first on Blavity.
