Reinier de Ridder eyes Chimaev vs Du Plessis victor after narrow win over Robert Whittaker
De Ridder won a split decision against Whittaker after a razor-close contest, emerging a 48-47, 47-48, 48-47 victor. With that, the Dutchman moved to 4-0 since making his UFC debut in November.
On top of that impressive run, 'RDR' has pedigree as a former two-weight champion in ONE, which might work in his favour as he looks to race into a title shot.
The grappling specialist, 34, was unable to find the stoppage against Whittaker – having TKOed Bo Nickal and submitted Gerald Meerschaert and Kevin Holland in his previous UFC bouts – and he was even dropped by a huge overhand in round two.
But just as he did against Nickal last time out, De Ridder sapped Whittaker's energy with brutal knees to the body, and he was able to control the Australian, 34, for long spells in certain rounds.
By losing the decision, Whittaker fell to back-to-back losses for the first time since 2014. In his previous fight, in October, he suffered a first-round submission by Khamzat Chimaev, who will challenge Dricus Du Plessis for the middleweight title in August.
And De Ridder is adamant that he wants to fight the winner of that contest, or even weigh in as the back-up fighter.
'Very close,' De Ridder said about his fight with Whittaker. 'I don't want to fight like this. This guy was too tough. I want to finish a guy in the first round, it would be much better. I expected to take him down and choke him out, but he was amazing. So tough, so durable.
'Maybe Khamzat, Dricus next. Give me a chance to fight for that strap.'

'So hopefully this is a small hiccup and then I'm back home, getting stronger again.' Askren, who previously revealed he 'died four times' before his double lung transplant, said last week that it was 'awesome' to be back at home with his family amid his health struggles. As he spoke about the strength he had lost, Askren struggled to speak at certain points of video and had to catch his breath. The former lightweight fighter told fans he was 'feeling strong' before his recent ordeal, as he was curling 45 pounds and doing hill sprints. Last month, Askren's wife, Amy, shared that Askren had undergone the life-saving double lung transplant. 'We are forever thankful to the donor and his family,' she announced. Jiri Prochazka says ‘deal' in place around Alex Pereira vs Magomed Ankalaev rematch
Jiri Prochazka has said he will serve as the back-up fighter for Alex Pereira 's rematch with Magomed Ankalaev in October, as he bids to regain the UFC light-heavyweight title. At UFC 320 in Las Vegas, Pereira will aim to reclaim the title from Ankalaev, having lost it to the Russian with a decision defeat in March. But should either fighter fail to make it to the main event, Prochazka will step in – potentially for a trilogy bout with Pereira, who twice beat the Czech in title fights. Prochazka is scheduled to face Khalil Rountree Jr, another former foe of Pereira, on the undercard at UFC 320, but the former champion could see himself elevated to the headline fight if needed. 'Yeah, that's right, yeah,' Prochazka, 32, told journalist Ariel Helwani on Monday (28 July). 'That was the deal with UFC.' He also added that the winner of his fight with Rountree will be next in line for a title shot, saying: 'Yes, yeah. It's not yet on paper, but we are right now... That was their word, so.' Given Prochazka and Rountree's respective histories with Pereira, a fight between either man and Ankalaev would mark a fresher match-up atop the 205lb division. Prochazka first faced Pereira in November 2023, fighting the Brazilian for the vacant title, which the latter won with a second-round TKO. In their rematch last June, 38-year-old Pereira achieved the same result in the same round, retaining the title. That preceded a fourth-round TKO of Rountree in October, as Pereira overcame a slow start to record a third straight retention of his title. He then lost the belt to Ankalaev, 33, via unanimous decision in March. Prochazka and Rountree will each enter their clash at UFC 320 on the back of a stoppage win over Jamahal Hill. Prochazka beat the former champion in January, before American Rountree, 35, did the same in June.
