Puducherry Speaker R. Selvam hoisted national flag at Kizhoor village on Saturday (August 16, 2025) to mark the De Jure Transfer of French Territories to India on August 16, 1962.
He also inspected a guard of honour given by the territorial police near the memorial constructed at Kizhoor village. Mr. Selvam, along with other government representatives, offered floral tributes at the memorial. Minister for Public Works K. Lakshminarayanan, Government Whip A.K.D Arumugham, Chief Secretary Sharath Chauhan, District Collector A. Kulothungan, Deputy Inspector General of Police Sathya Sundaram, and Senior Superintendent of Police R. Kalaivanan were present.
Freedom fighters were honoured on the occasion. The Union Territory observes August 16 every year as De Jure Transfer Day. The national flag is hoisted at Kizhoor, around 22 km from the town, as it was in that village the people of Puducherry gathered to hold a referendum to reject French rule.
Of the 178 members, including elected members of the Representative Assembly and the municipal councillors of Pondicherry and Karaikal who took part in the referendum at Kizhoor, 170 favoured the merger of the French Indian territories with India. On August 16, 1962, the French government conceded the merger of Pondicherry and other French establishments through the De Jure Transfer.

Muslims in UP's Moradabad told not to name wedding bands after Hindu deities

The police in Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad have ordered Muslim wedding band operators not to name their bands after Hindu deities after a complaint was filed on the chief minister's portal, the Hindustan Times reported on Thursday. A complaint was registered by a lawyer on July 9, claiming that about 15 to 20 Muslim band operators in the district were running their businesses using the names of Hindu deities, the newspaper quoted unidentified police officers as saying. The complainant claimed that the practice hurt religious sentiments. Superintendent of Police (City) Kumar Ranvijay Singh told Amar Ujala that several band operators in the district were summoned on Tuesday and told to remove such names. 'All of them have said that they will remove the names,' he was quoted as saying. The complainant told the Hindustan Times that the wedding band industry in Moradabad was largely dominated by Muslims. 'Yet many of these establishments operate under Hindu names, including those of gods and goddesses,' he said. 'This is an attempt to distort identity,' he alleged. 'The chief minister [Adityanath] himself has called for action against such practices.' The action taken by the police based on his complaint was not discrimination, but 'legal action', he told the newspaper. This came a month after the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments directed eateries along the Kanwar Yatra pilgrimage route to display quick response codes with their owners' identities. The matter was challenged in the Supreme Court, where a counsel for the Uttarakhand government reportedly claimed that the real problem was dhabas named 'Shiva Dhaba' or 'Parvati Dhaba' being run by Muslims. On July 22, the court refused to examine the legality of the directives issued by the two state governments. Similar orders were issued by Uttar Pradesh in 2024. The police in the state's Muzaffarnagar had claimed at the time that the decision was taken to ' avoid confusion ' among devotees who will travel on the route.

Meloni has a plan to guarantee Ukraine's security: Decide response within 24 hrs if Russia attacks

The Italian proposal acknowledges that Nato membership for Ukraine remains out of reach for now but aims to provide an alternative framework for collective support, according to sources familiar with the discussions US President Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte amid negotiations to end the Russian war in Ukraine, at the White House. Reuters European leaders are scrambling to chart out a workable plan for Ukraine's security guarantees that would be activated if Russia attacks the country and would enable Kyiv's allies to decide within 24 hours whether to provide military support to it. Amid all the discussions, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is pushing a plan that is similar to Nato's collective defence clause but does not require Kyiv to become a member of the alliance at the same time. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD What's the plan? The Italian proposal acknowledges that Nato membership for Ukraine remains out of reach for now but aims to provide an alternative framework for collective support, according to sources familiar with the discussions. This so-called 'Nato-light' approach would stop short of the alliance's Article 5 mutual defence commitment but would require countries with bilateral security agreements with Ukraine to consult swiftly in the event of an attack, sources told Bloomberg. The Italian plan involves providing Kyiv with rapid and sustained defence support, along with economic assistance, bolstering the Ukrainian military, as well as imposing sanctions on Russia. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto told local newspaper Repubblica that Meloni's plan 'is that NATO, as a defensive alliance, able to ensure the protection of a foreign country like Ukraine. Alternatively, individual nations could commit to doing so. The best mechanism will be chosen eventually. Certainly, with NATO, a superior deterrent would be guaranteed.' 'Russia must be part of security guarantees' Russia said on Wednesday it had to be part of any discussion on security guarantees for Ukraine and downplayed the likelihood of an imminent summit with President Volodymyr Zelensky, tempering hopes for a quick peace deal. NATO military chiefs meanwhile held a virtual summit on security guarantees for Ukraine, the latest in a flurry of global diplomacy aimed at brokering an end to the nearly three-and-a-half year conflict. 'On #Ukraine, we confirmed our support. Priority continues to be a just, credible and durable peace,' the chair of the alliance's military committee, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, wrote on X after the meeting. Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier warned that 'seriously discussing security guarantees without the Russian Federation is a utopia, a road to nowhere'.
