Gensol defaults on BluSmart-linked bond repayment for May

Gensol defaults on BluSmart-linked bond repayment for May

Time of India5 days ago

Gensol Engineering
, promoted by the founders of electric mobility firm
BluSmart
, has defaulted on payment of around ₹4 crore to its pass-through certificates (
PTCs
) holders this month.
The last repayment that was processed successfully was in April, people aware of the matter said.
The troubled solar engineering, procurement and construction company had raised these funds by issuing PTCs, which were distributed to retail investors via online platform Grip Invest. PTCs are usually loans that are raised in lieu of any underlying asset. In this case, the company had offered vehicles plied on the BluSmart platform as collateral for these loans.
As the vehicles plied and generated revenue, repayments were processed out of that cash flow. Now, as the BluSmart cab service stopped and deal talks with ride hailing platform Uber and fleet operators are yet to come to fruition, the loan repayment has become uncertain.
Confirming the development, Grip Invest founder Nikhil Agarwal said that while the total issue size was ₹5.6 crore, 56per cent of the principal amount has been repaid by Gensol and currently the outstanding is ₹4.04 crore.
These loans were secured against 76 vehicles that were previously run on the BluSmart platform.
On May 29, the Delhi High Court passed a final order and gave Vriksh Advisors, the lessor, the right to operate, sell or lease the assets.
'All vehicles are now in the possession of the lessor. The same have been inspected and found to be in good working order,' Aggarwal told ET.
Vriksh Advisors is a subsidiary of Grip Invest.
Aggarwal said the company has taken possession of the vehicles, inspected them, created charging facilities and is now in talks with fleet operators looking to deploy these vehicles on ride sharing platforms.
A senior industry insider, however, said the repayment structure for PTCs might change even if the vehicles start running.
'Commissions, revenues, pricing and all the other factors would not remain the same across all platforms, so those things will need to be considered before starting the repayment schedule,' he pointed out.
Vriksh Advisors is in the process of finding the best suitable buyer of the assets, so they can be used to repay the loans taken against them, people cited above said.
'People invested in BluSmart bonds and PTCs thinking of the cab services, which had a big brand value, and they were also attracted to the high returns offered by these instruments,' said an investor who has exposure to BluSmart bonds.
According to a credit rating document issued by Care Edge Ratings on Tuesday, these bonds issued in 2023 were due to mature in 2027 and offered a coupon rate of 13.6per cent .
ET had reported on April 21 that BluSmart investors were expecting major defaults on bonds they had purchased via platforms like Yubi, Centricity and others. The ride-hailing company had issued more than ₹100 crore worth of bonds over the last one year.
The investor quoted above said that more than ₹80 crore of NCDs are due for repayments from BluSmart.
This comes at a time when the Gensol promoters Anmol Singh Jaggi and his brother Puneet Singh Jaggi are under investigation for siphoning off funds from the company for personal consumption. While BluSmart has halted its operations, Gensol's bank accounts have been frozen under directives from the National Company Law Tribunal, Ahmedabad.
State-run
Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency
(Ireda) last week said it has moved the Debts Recovery Tribunal, Delhi, against
Gensol Engineering
and its arm Gensol EV Lease, claiming a default of about ₹729 crore. Ireda had earlier filed an insolvency petition against Gensol.
The entire saga started after market regulator Sebi kicked off an investigation into Gensol Engineering following a stock manipulation complaint it received in June 2024. Its findings showed that the
Jaggi brothers
diverted loans Gensol took to procure electric vehicles for personal use.

Krutrim finds few takers for its LLMs and cloud products

Krutrim , the artificial intelligence (AI) arm of the Ola group , has received tepid response for its large language models (LLMs) and cloud products, according to some founders and developers who have evaluated these offerings. This is in large part due to the poor documentation of Krutrim's products, as well as a lack of adequate technical maturity, they said, with startups preferring hypescalers such as Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services over Krutrim's cloud service. Bengaluru-based Krutrim became India's first AI startup to reach unicorn status after it secured $50 million in funding in 2024 at a $1 billion valuation. The people cited earlier also said that the leadership churn at Krutrim since 2024, which saw the exit of more than 20 people, including key executives and those at the junior and mid-management levels, has not helped either. Two early-stage founders told ET that they had signed up for Krutrim Cloud but have now moved to hyperscalers Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services. Mehul Mohan, chief executive officer of Codedamn, an AI tutoring platform, in a YouTube video aired on February 1, said that while Krutrim offers several models on its cloud, there is not enough documentation available and lacks transparency compared with global players such as Amazon, for similar pricing. In response to ET's query about lack of takers for its products, Krutrim's spokesperson issued a statement saying they are building the AI stack for India, including frontier AI model development, AI Cloud and silicon design, which require continuous innovation and investment in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. 'We highly value user feedback and regularly benchmark our performance against industry standards,' the statement said. 'All Krutrim offerings are under active development and will see significant enhancements in the coming quarters.' Lack of technical maturity Ola founder Aggarwal first announced Krutrim in December 2023, launching an LLM that could support 10 Indian languages, starting with Krutrim chatbot in February 2024, and cloud offering shortly after. Two founders told ET recently that repeated sign-in attempts were blocked by a persistent 'logged out of session' error, making sign-up via mobile or Gmail difficult. Similar issues were found with Krutrim cloud, where messages such as 'invalid credentials' and 'invalid captcha' create problems for signing up, the founders said, adding that login issues persist with Krutrim's products. ET has independently verified the issues. Rajiv Ranjan, lead analyst, India cloud and data center services, International Data Corporation (IDC), said one of the challenges a new player like Krutrim cloud might face is that enterprises already have existing contracts with hyperscalers. So, moving to a new platform can be risky due to lack of familiarity, potential integration challenges with existing cloud platforms, and the need to train internal staff with a new set of tools. Newer firms like Krutrim will have to offer higher performance, and cost-effective products to attract customers to try the new platform for specific use cases, Ranjan said. High latency Krutrim's AI model, marked by high latency, which refers to response time, has trouble attracting users as well. A former Krutrim employee ET spoke with said, "Less than 10,000 people use their chat version, and more than 60% of it are random testers.' While chat and web search are fast, Shashank Agarwal, founder, Noveum, said the app failed on other accounts such as academic, audio and image search. ET reviewed and found that Krutrim's AI chatbot took 41 seconds to generate a response for a prompt. In contrast, ChatGPT-4o and DeepSeek took less than 10 seconds. The number of downloads for Krutrim's two AI models--Krutrim 1 and Krutrim 2--have not seen much traction. According to data from HuggingFace, in the past month, the former has seen 76 downloads and the latter, 1,445. In contrast, India-based rival Sarvam's 2B parameter model has seen 3,405 downloads. However, both the Indian platforms lag global models such as Mistral (7B model) and DeepSeek-R1, which have been downloaded 1 million and 680,000 times, respectively, in the past month. Naresh Singh, senior director, analyst, at Gartner did not directly respond to a query on Krutrim's performance, but said the initial performance of the Indian AI models does not stand up in comparison to global models. 'They should be open to scrutiny and give their models up for people to study. But that has not happened yet,' Singh said. With inputs from Suraksha P.

Signature Global to invest Rs 4,000 cr in FY26 for construction projects

Realty firm Signature Global will invest around Rs 4,000 crore this fiscal to acquire land parcels and carry out construction activities in its housing projects at Gurugram, a top company official said on Monday. In an interview with PTI, Signature Global Chairman Pradeep Kumar Aggarwal said the company had invested Rs 1,070 crore last fiscal year to purchase 48-acre land in Gurugram, Haryana. "Land is an important raw material for real estate developers. We will be investing around Rs 1,200-1,500 crore on the acquisition of land parcels," he said. The company is looking for lands in the Delhi-NCR market to expand its business, Aggarwal noted. "Housing demand continues to be strong from end-users as well as investors. There is a mismatch of demand-supply," he said. Asked about construction spend, Aggarwal said the investment in construction activities would be around Rs 2,500 crore in 2025-26 against Rs 1,900 crore in the preceding fiscal. He highlighted that the company performed exceedingly well and achieved its target on most of the operational metrics. Signature Global's sales bookings rose 42 per cent to a record Rs 10,290 crore in 2024-25, placing it among the top 5 listed real estate companies in terms of pre-sales during the last fiscal year. "We want to maintain consistent annual growth in the medium and long term. Therefore, we have given a guidance of achieving sales bookings of Rs 12,500 crore in the current fiscal," Aggarwal said. On the financial front, Signature Global has posted a net profit of Rs 101.2 crore last fiscal, a sharp jump from Rs 16.32 crore in the preceding year. Its total income grew to Rs 2,637.99 crore in the last fiscal from Rs 1,324.55 crore in 2023-24. Signature Global has developed many housing projects in Gurugram, with many more currently under construction. The company has delivered 13.5 million sq ft of housing projects and has a strong pipeline of about 21.6 million sq ft of saleable area in upcoming projects, along with 46.38 million sq ft of ongoing projects, targeted for completion within the next 2-3 years.
