
Chefs set new world record for longest line of tarts in Johor
JOHOR BARU: A seven-year-old Guinness World Record (GWR) has been broken by 115 World Chefs Championships participants for the longest line of tarts.
The chefs, coming from 16 countries including from Malaysia, beat the record made in Hong Kong on Dec 9, 2018, by making fruit tarts during the event held at the Persada International Convention Centre here on Thursday (May 29).
The group successfully made 4,399 pieces of fruit tarts with a total length of 221.63m to beat the previous record of 2,333 tarts or 186.64m.
GWR adjudicator Sonia Ushirogochi declared the attempt a success, much to the delight of the jubilant group of chefs who contributed their efforts to make it into the records book.
This is the third time that the event made its way into the GWR as last year, they cooked the largest Johor style fried noodle while in 2023, they set a new world record for the largest serving of char koay teow.
Meanwhile, state unity, culture and heritage committee chairman K. Raven Kumar, who represented Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi during the event opening, said this was the third time the World Chefs Championship was held here.
'Organising the World Chefs Championship in Johor is the best opportunity for us to boost the gastronomy tourism sector to a much higher level.
'The competition can also increase the standard among local culinary and exchange ideas with their counterparts coming from all over the world,' he added.
Raven said this year's competition saw a total number of 2,128 chefs, including Malaysians, competing with other chefs coming from 17 countries such as Singapore, United States, Australia, China, Taiwan and many others.

GENEVA, June 2 (Xinhua) -- The Frequency School set a new Guinness World Record for the most nationalities contributing vocals to a single musical recording, with the release of the song "195" on Monday, highlighting global unity and gender equality. The song "195" is the first in history to feature women from each of the 195 countries recognized by the United Nations. The number of contributors and their nationalities were officially verified by a Guinness World Records adjudicator. "Being part of this initiative to support women on an international stage is an incredible honor," she said. Noting that Kiribati is a small island nation in the Pacific, where the highest point is just three meters above sea level, Moriati said, "Opportunities to represent our small country are rare, and I am grateful for this platform to amplify the voices of Kiribati women." Sawilanji Nachula, a middle school student representing Zambia, shared her determination to promote gender equality as she grows. China was represented by Joyce Peng Peng, the CEO of the Montreux Jazz Festival China, which is set to take place at the Suzhou Arts and Culture Center in Jiangsu Province from Oct. 24 to 26.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 — Once a quiet and reserved young man, 24-year-old Maxximus Towle never imagined he would rise to fame, captivating thousands of viewers and effortlessly hosting five-hour live streams each day. Choosing a career as a live sales host for men's fashion brand Zeve has opened unexpected doors for Towle, who is now one of the most recognisable faces on TikTok Live. What began as an attempt to sell gadget accessories and skincare products has since blossomed into a full-fledged career. Towle draws in thousands of viewers during each livestream — not just for his persuasive sales pitches, but also thanks to his magnetic personality and striking good looks, which have propelled the Johorian into the viral spotlight. Beyond selling, Towle's Eurasian heritage and engaging presence have earned him a loyal fan base, with many viewers staying tuned in even without the intention of making a purchase. 'After completing my SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia), I tried out several jobs. But in 2023, I challenged myself to try something new and applied to become a live host. This job isn't just a source of income — I see it as a way to transform myself,' he told Bernama. Standing at 175 centimetres tall, Towle acknowledges that being a live host may seem easy to outsiders, but in reality, it demands emotional resilience, sustained energy, and sharp communication skills. 'Some days, you're tired or emotionally off-balance, but once you go live, you have to smile and stay composed. You also need to handle a wide range of questions from customers,' he said. Apart from maintaining high energy and focus, he also deals with all kinds of comments from viewers, including irrelevant or overly personal ones. 'We filter the comments — we focus on the ones related to the products and ignore the rest. If we entertain everything, we'll lose focus. But I get it — most of them are just joking around,' he said. As a full-time employee, Towle must meet key performance indicator (KPI) targets in terms of sales and viewership. To stay consistent, he frequently reviews past livestreams and holds regular discussions with his manager to improve. He draws inspiration from his father, a former salesman, and credits him with teaching him how to communicate confidently and close a sale. But with fame comes new challenges. Towle has faced safety and privacy issues, including individuals attempting to locate his home address.
