National Australia Bank Profit Tops Estimates, Margins Bite

Mint07-05-2025

(Bloomberg) -- National Australia Bank Ltd.'s earnings topped analyst expectations in the first half of the year as the firm's key unit of lending to businesses grew, despite continued pressure on margins.
Cash profit rose 1% to A$3.58 billion ($2.33 billion) in the six months ended March 31, the firm said in a statement on Wednesday. That compared with the A$3.47 billion average estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.
Chief Executive Officer Andrew Irvine is one year into his role atop the Melbourne-based lender and is facing an economy where interest rates are expected to keep falling, weighing on the profitability of banks. Shares in rival Westpac Banking Corp. earlier this week slipped as analysts warned its push in business lending is being hurt by a tighter funding market.
'We are optimistic about the underlying growth outlook for the Australian and New Zealand economies,' Irvine said in the statement. 'However, escalating global trade tensions are a key source of uncertainty. Against this backdrop, we have maintained strong balance sheet settings.'
The firm's business and private banking division saw lower impairment charges, while lower margins offset volume growth. Expenses were slightly higher due to investments to support business growth.
Profit slipped within the unit of personal banking, which includes mortgages, which the firm described as 'challenging.'
While market volatility and shifts in global trade policy are impacting the economy, Australia is well placed to withstand the changes, Irvine said.
'Uncertainty might be uncomfortable for businesses and households, but overall Australia entered this period in good shape,' Irvine said. 'Low unemployment, easing inflation and anticipated growth are all helping. This provides capacity for future cash rate cuts to help offset any further global headwinds.'
Net interest margin was stable at 1.70%. Excluding the contribution from markets and treasury operations, it dipped by three basis points. NAB will pay an interim dividend of 85 Australian cents per share.

Ban on Karnataka mangoes may lead to retaliatory steps, Karnataka CM tells Andhra counterpart

BENGALURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urged Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to withdraw the ban on entry of Totapuri mangoes from Karnataka into Chittoor district in AP. In a letter to Naidu, the Karnataka CM stated that the abrupt and unilateral move has caused considerable hardship to mango growers in Karnataka, particularly those in the border regions who cultivate Totapuri mangoes in substantial quantities. 'These farmers have long relied on the robust linkages with Chitroor-based processing and pulp extraction units for marketing their produce. The current restriction has disrupted this well-established supply chain and threatens significant post-harvest losses, directly impacting the livelihoods of thousands of farmers,' the CM stated. Siddaramaiah said actions of this nature taken without prior consultation or coordination run contrary to the spirit of cooperative federalism. 'I am also concerned that this may lead to avoidable tension and retaliatory measures, with stakeholders already expressing discontent that could potentially disrupt the inter-state movement of vegetables and other agricultural commodities,' the CM stated. He urged Naidu to direct the district authorities in Chittoor to immediately revoke the ban on entry of mangoes from Karnataka.

Investors accuse Bengaluru builder firm of cheating in Kakkanad project

KOCHI: Around 50 people have approached the Kochi city police accusing Bengaluru-based real estate developer Hoysala Projects Ltd of defrauding them of over Rs 30 crore that they collectively invested in new apartment projects at Kusumagiri along Infopark Road in Kakkanad. Based on the complaint of Sathyanarayanan Gopinathan Nair from Aluva, one of the investors, the Infopark police have registered a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust under the IPC. As per the complaint, Hoysala Projects allegedly deceived investors, causing them financial distress, and without timely intervention, their lives would be ruined. Sathyanarayanan alleged the issue dates back to 2013-2014, when Hoysala Projects launched a development project featuring two 13-storey towers comprising a total of 128 flats. He said the builder promised modern amenities, including a shopping mall. At the time, construction of around 11 floors had been completed, attracting numerous investors, who paid 25% of the flat's cost as part of the initial payment schedule, but the builder failed to complete the project even after collecting the money, he alleged. 'After getting no response from the developer for nearly five years, we approached the Kerala Real Estate Regulatory Authority (K-RERA) in 2021. The authority directed the developer to complete the project and later appointed a commission to investigate the delay. However, upon learning about the investigation, the developer unilaterally cancelled the agreements and allotments, and issued cancellation notices to 50 investors,' Sathyanarayanan alleged.

Meta makes major investment in Scale AI, takes in CEO

Scale AI announced a "significant" new investment by Meta late Thursday that values the startup at more than $29 billion and puts its founder to work for the tech titan. Scale AI founder and chief executive Alexandr Wang will join Meta to work on the tech giant's own artificial intelligence efforts as part of the deal, according to the startup. Meta was reportedly pouring more than $10 billion into San Francisco-based Scale AI, and acquires its 28-year-old CEO amid fierce competition in the AI race with rivals such as OpenAI, Google and Microsoft. Scale AI works with business, governments and labs to exploit the benefits of artificial intelligence, according to the startup. "Meta's investment recognizes Scale's accomplishments to date and reaffirms that our path forward -- like that of AI -- is limitless," Wang said in a release. "Scale bridges the gap between human values and technology to help our customers realize AI's full potential." Scale AI will use the infusion of capital to accelerate innovation and strengthen partnerships, along with distributing proceeds to equity holders, according to the startup. Meta will hold a minority stake in Scale AI after the investment deal closes. Tech industry veteran and investor Jason Droege, a co-founder of Uber Eats food delivery platform, will take over as chief of Scale AI, according to the company. "Scale has led the charge in accelerating AI development," Droege said in a release. "We have built the strongest foundation to tackle AI's data challenges and push the boundaries of what's possible." Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg recently touted the tech firm's generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) assistant, telling shareholders it is used by a billion people each month across its platforms.
