Bhanu Attri makes history as British Royal Navy's first-ever Hindu chaplain

India Todaya day ago
The UK's Royal Navy has appointed Bhanu Attri, originally from Himachal Pradesh, as its first-ever Hindu chaplain, marking the first time a non-Christian has been officially entrusted with offering spiritual support within the naval force.39-year-old Attri will provide pastoral care and guidance to officers and sailors based on the teachings of Hinduism, reflecting the Navy's broader commitment to diversity and inclusion.advertisementHis appointment follows a rigorous pathway distinct from other cadets. He completed six weeks of officer instruction, including survival training and four weeks at sea aboard the warship HMS Iron Duke, before undertaking three weeks of specialised chaplaincy training to prepare for his unique responsibilities.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu congratulated Bhanu Attri on his achievement, describing it as a matter of pride for both the state and the country.Describing the role as 'a profound honour,' Attri said, 'As a Hindu brought up in India, the opportunity to represent individuals from diverse religions brings meaningful representation for the Hindu community and reflects the Navy's commitment to spiritual care for all. My family feels immense pride, a pride grounded in generations of faith, service, and resilience.'The Hindu Council UK (HCUK) welcomed the milestone, having recommended Attri for the post. The council outlined stringent criteria for the chaplaincy, including physical and mental fitness, deep grounding in Hindu philosophy, leadership experience, pastoral abilities, and strong interfaith and cultural integration skills.'The training can be arduous, requiring medical fitness standards and readiness for duty 24/7 at short notice,' noted Anil Bhanot, HCUK's advisor to the Ministry of Defence. He added that Attri's appointment could encourage more young British Hindus to explore military careers, emphasising, 'Although our spiritual bhoomi (land) is India, our karmabhoomi is the United Kingdom — and the MoD represents our protective arm.'Attri was among 148 new officers who completed the Royal Navy's Initial Officer Training at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) in Dartmouth. Over 29 weeks, cadets were trained in leadership, naval history, seafaring, survival, and teamwork. The course culminated in a formal passing-out ceremony attended by families, friends, and senior naval leaders, where the new officers were recognised as the 'leaders of tomorrow.'- Ends

Senthil says Janardhana's claims that he masterminded Dharmasthala case is ridiculous

1 2 Bengaluru: Sasikanth Senthil, a key strategist behind Congress' victory in the 2023 elections in Karnataka, denied allegations that he is the "mastermind" behind a campaign to defame Dharmasthala, the popular Hindu pilgrimage centre in Dakshina Kannada district. Mining baron and BJP legislator Gali Janardhana Reddy had accused Senthil, now a Congress MP from Tamil Nadu, of being "director and scriptwriter" in a case that led to the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe allegations of mass murders in Dharmasthala. Senthil suggested Reddy was being vindictive. He told TOI, "When I joined as assistant commissioner of Ballari, Reddy was in the spotlight for illegal mining and CBI had asked me to provide all documents against him. I have no connection with the Dharmasthala issue. I am not even aware of what is happening there." But Reddy stood by his accusation Wednesday. "If Senthil says he is innocent, then let him come and depose before SIT on his own volition and prove me wrong," Reddy said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Unwelcoming Countries in the World, Ranked BigGlobalTravel Undo Reddy said Senthil's tenure as assistant commissioner in Ballari began only after his arrest, and his allegations had nothing to do with being jailed because of the bureaucrat. Senthil countered it saying it is for the state govt to handle the issue, not him. "The Congress govt is quite competent to deal with allegations of mass murders in Dharmasthala and does not require a TN MP to intervene. The accusations against me are baseless and ridiculous," he said. He pointed out that even during his tenure as deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, he had little to do with Dharmasthala. "There were much bigger issues at play, and I had no time for rumours involving Dharmasthala," Senthil said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Dhar admn seals Imambada, hands it over to PWD

Mhow: Dhar district administration sealed an Imambada on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday after getting it vacated and later handed it over to Public Works Department (PWD). A heavy police force was deployed in the town to prevent any untoward incident while the Imambada was being vacated and sealed. The Imambada, operated from a section of PWD building in Hatwara area of the town, had been under the possession of Tajiya committee for decades. Hindu organisations had contested that it was a govt-owned building meant for running cultural activities and should be available for all communities. The Tajiya committee argued that permission was granted for storing Tajiyas (tableaux). The action was taken following a complaint filed at the Dhar SDM court. The SDM court had ordered for the vacation of the premises. Challenging the order, the Tajiya committee had filed an appeal in Commissioner's revenue court, which also maintained the SDM court's order on Tuesday. Dhar SP Manoj Kumar Singh told TOI, "On the orders of the SDM court, the portion was vacated and handed over to PWD. Looking at the issue, additional police force was deployed in the area as well as the whole town to ensure that nothing untoward takes place. As far as the situation in Dhar is concerned, it is peaceful and fully under control, and the force will remain there round the clock." Abdul Samad, Sadar (head) of Muslim community, said that he was unaware of the action but claimed that a petition in this regard was filed in the Supreme Court. "I'm waiting for the hearing on my petition, which is expected on August 22 or 23," he added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Capt. Chowta urges Karnataka government not to impose unreasonable restrictions on Hindu festivities

Capt. Brijesh Chowta, Dakshina Kannada MP, on Wednesday urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah not to hurt sentiments of Hindus by imposing unreasonable restrictions on festivities through the police. In a statement from New Delhi, Capt. Chowta alleged that the state government was using the police to hurt HIndu sentiments. Referring to recent guidelines by the Mangaluru city and the Dakshina Kannada district police which, among other things, restricted the use of DJ system, holding festivities beyond 10 p.m. etc., the MP said several socio-cultural-religious programmes take place throughout the year in Tulunadu. However, the Mangaluru police booking a case against the organisers and seizing the sound system at a Mosaru Kudike celebration in Kavoor, was deplorable, the MP said. When people were celebrating festivals with great fervour, the police interruptions were not good. During the erstwhile BJP rule too, there were restrictions on the use of loudspeakers; yet the police did not interfere in the celebrations, he noted. Now it appears that the government has given specific instructions to the police to disturb Hindu festivities, he alleged. Owners of sound systems were contemplating not to use loudspeakers in any public function after the police booked one of them in Kavoor. The restrictions would adversely affect people engaged in the business. Capt. Chowta noted that elected representatives of the region had raised the issue before Home Minister G. Parameshwara during his recent visit to Mangaluru. However, the Minister did not resolve the issue then. If the government continues to meddle with Hindu sentiments, it would be held responsible for any consequences, the MP cautioned. The Kavoor police on August 16 booked the organisers and sound system owners at the Mosaru Kudike celebrations at Panjimogaru for using DJ system and obstructing traffic movement on a public road.
