Gold prices are on a record-breaking streak as the US dollar continues to weaken against most major currencies.
Spot gold hit another record high of US$3,440 an ounce in early trading, following US President Donald Trump's reposting of a comment over the long holiday weekend.
"The Golden Rule Of Negotiating And Success: He who has the gold makes the rules."
However, Westpac currency strategist Imre Speizer said there were other reasons why gold was finding favour with investors.
"A major theme that we're seeing unfold is the questioning of the US dollar's identity as the reserve currency of choice in the world. That questioning has caused it to underperform," Speizer said.
"There's clearly been large-scale selling of the US dollar and buying of other currencies, as well as buying of other instruments, like gold, which I think partially explains most sitting up near record highs. So essentially, there's a bit of a diversification away from the US dollar unfolding as we speak."
The New Zealand dollar also continued to rise against the US dollar, trading at about US$0.60, compared with less than US$0.55 earlier this month.
Foreign currency exchange market analyst Linh Tran at XS.com said the gold rally continued as defensive sentiment spread across global financial markets.
"The rally remains supported by three core drivers: growing expectations that the Federal Reserve will soon shift to monetary easing, escalating trade tensions between the US and China, and persistent geopolitical risks-especially as peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine remain stalled," he said.
He said the spotlight over the past week was on a hardline move by the Trump administration, terminating the "de minimis" rule, which was a trade provision that exempted imported goods valued under $800 from tariffs.
"For years, this loophole has been used by many Chinese companies to ship low-cost goods into the US market without facing high tariff rates. Closing this channel will significantly raise the cost of Chinese goods and clearly signals Washington's increasingly tough stance on bilateral trade."
In addition, he said tensions between the world's two largest economies intensified further with reports that China has cancelled a series of Boeing aircraft orders, citing a need to "reassess strategic priorities."
Speizer said the unease was seeing a shift in sentiment by global reserve managers regarding the US as a safe haven.
"Looking ahead, if this turmoil continues, not only will they question whether the US dollar is indeed safe, but they'll see alternatives like the Euro-denominated government bonds or government bonds from Germany as being a viable alternative to start parking some of that safe haven money into," Speizer said.
New York-based 50 Park Investments chief executive Adam Sarhan told Reuters the US dollar weakness reflected the market uncertainty.
"The fact that we're down so much today after a long weekend tells me, OK, investors went into the weekend, they looked at the situation, and they see more uncertainty, not less uncertainty," Sarhan said.
"We're seeing more weakness now in the dollar and gold is at all-time highs, so clearly investors are spooked and fear is taking over."

Musk threatens to withdraw Dragon spacecraft, a key link for NASA

As US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk argued on social media today, the world's richest man threatened to decommission a space capsule used to take astronauts and supplies to the International Space Station. After Trump threatened to cut government contracts given to Musk's SpaceX rocket company and his Starlink internet satellite services, Musk responded via X that SpaceX "will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately'. It's unclear how serious Musk's threat was. But the capsule, developed with the help of government contracts, is an important part of keeping the space station running. NASA also relied heavily on SpaceX for other programmes including launching science missions and, later this decade, returning astronauts to the surface of the moon. The Dragon capsule SpaceX is the only US company capable right now of transporting crews to and from the space station, using its four-person Dragon capsules. ADVERTISEMENT Boeing's Starliner capsule has flown astronauts only once; last year's test flight went so badly that the two NASA astronauts had to hitch a ride back to Earth via SpaceX in March, more than nine months after launching last June. Starliner remains grounded as NASA decides whether to go with another test flight with cargo, rather than a crew. SpaceX also uses a Dragon capsule for its own privately run missions. The next one of those is due to fly next week on a trip chartered by Axiom Space, a Houston company. Cargo versions of the Dragon capsule are also used to ferry food and other supplies to the orbiting lab. NASA's other option: Russia Russia's Soyuz capsules are the only other means of getting crews to the space station right now. The Soyuz capsules hold three people at a time. For now, each Soyuz launch carries two Russians and one NASA astronaut, and each SpaceX launch has one Russian on board under a barter system. That way, in an emergency requiring a capsule to return, there is always someone from the US and Russian on board. ADVERTISEMENT With its first crew launch for NASA in 2020 — the first orbital flight of a crew by a private company — SpaceX enabled NASA to reduce its reliance on Russia for crew transport. The Russian flights had been costing the US tens of millions of dollars per seat, for years. NASA has also used Russian spacecraft for cargo, along with US contractor Northrup Grumman. SpaceX's other government launches The company has used its rockets to launch several science missions for NASA as well as military equipment. Last year, SpaceX also won a NASA contract to help bring the space station out of orbit when it is no longer usable. SpaceX's Starship mega rocket is what NASA has picked to get astronauts from lunar orbit to the surface of the moon, at least for the first two landing missions. Starship made its ninth test flight last week from Texas, but tumbled out of control and broke apart.

Foreign exchange fined amid transactions deemed 'objectively suspicious'

An Auckland-based foreign exchange and money remittance company has been convicted and fined $1.125 million for failing to report suspicious activities and to submit prescribed transaction reports. An investigation by the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) found that Qian DuoDuo Limited, which traded under the name Lidong Foreign Exchange, found it failed to report 197 international transactions to China between June 2018 and September 2019. The transactions, which totalled over $19.14 million, included 26 "objectively suspicious" activities with a value of $4.72 million and 171 involved prescribed transactions with a value of $14.42 million. The value of the nearly 200 transactions represented around one fifth of the gross value transactions undertaken by Qian DuoDuo Limited for the 2018/2019 financial year. Two individuals who completed the transactions, Xiaoyu Lu and Musubayoufa Fuati, were convicted of criminal offending. ADVERTISEMENT Fuati was convicted of structuring transactions to avoid anti-money laundering laws, while Lu was convicted of providing unregistered financial services, as well as multiple counts of money laundering. Both pleaded guilty to their charges. In sentencing, the Auckland District Court found the company failed to carry out adequate customer due diligence on the source of Fuati and Lu's funds and relied on questionable verification documents despite recognising a high risk that its operations could be used to launder money. Anti-money laundering and countering financing of terrorism director Serge Sablyak said Internal Affairs took offences under the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Act 2009 "very seriously". "Suspicious transactions have the potential to be linked to money laundering or terrorist financing activities. Prescribed transaction reports are vital in alerting law enforcement to suspected offenders and make money laundering and terrorist financing difficult to hide." Sablyak said Qian DuoDuo Limited had a "history of non-compliance". "In 2017, the Department took civil action against the company following non-compliance with its obligations, and the High Court confirmed multiple breaches of the company's legal obligations. "When financial institutions, including money remitters, continue to fail to meet their obligations under the Act, the Department can and will take action." ADVERTISEMENT Qian DuoDuo Limited appealed the District Court's decision to the High Court.

Elon Musk and Donald Trump in fiery war of words

America's biggest bromance has broken up. Elon Musk and US president Donald Trump are stuck in a fiery war of words that kicked off on social media. Musk called for the president's impeachment and alleged Trump's name appears in unreleased files related to late billionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. It is a feud sparked by Donald Trump's so-called "big beautiful" tax and spending bill which Elon Musk has spoken out against since leaving the White House last week. US correspondent Todd Zwillich spoke to Lisa Owen.
