Vaibhavi Merchant On Winning National Award After 26 Years: ‘It Feels Unreal'
Vaibhavi Merchant, renowned Choreographer, is currently on cloud nine as she has received her second National Film Award for the song Dhindora Baje Re from the film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Now, during an interview, she expressed her happiness over winning the prestigious title once again after 26 years.
Not just this, Viabhavi also felt grateful to share the National Award win moment with her best friend Rani Mukerji, who won the title for the film Mrs Chatterjee Vs. Norway.
Vaibhavi Merchant On Winning National Film Award
Speaking to Hindustan Times, the choreographer said, 'I received my first national award when I was 21, and now I'm 49 years old and receiving it. I was too young to understand the magnitude of the honour the first time I got it. I was working nonstop, and eventually, I started to miss it. Then I was hoping that I was accomplishing something significant enough to merit that prize again."
She added, 'I would always wish to earn an honour that is well-deserved and not manufactured. For me, this National Award is extremely important. I'm still in surprise that I've won this after all these years, and I'm only glad for the emotions I'm having right now."
Vaibhavi Merchant On Sharing Winning Moment With Rani Mukerji
The choreographer is also thrilled that she won in the same year that her best friend Rani Mukerji won her first National Film Award for Best Actress for Mrs Chatterjee Vs. Norway. 'I'm now away from my best friend Rani, who also won it this year. But it gives me so much happiness to know that she won her first and I won my second, and I'm simply overjoyed. We've known about each other's work for all the years we've been together, and this is just too sweet. I cannot express it in words," she says.
Vaibhavi Merchant Feels Happy About Song's Creativity Getting Praised
She further added, 'I'm not sure if I'd be as happy to get it on an item song, which is the norm. It is a highly populist mindset to give the award to a popular item song rather than the choreography. So, this time, I'm pleased that the song's creativity was recognised rather than its popularity."
Vaibhavi Merchant On Her Love For Classical Art Form
'I've been doing Bharatnatyam for ten years and am still a student of the classical art form. You must understand the purity and seriousness of those creative forms, as well as what we value–our heritage and culture. There's so much we can do with what we have, and when that recognition comes from a Karan Johar platform where so many people come in to watch it in the cinema hall and you get to showcase that art form, it's incredible," said the choreographer.
Helmed by Karan Johar, the film features Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Shabana Azmi, Dharmendra and Jaya Bachchan in the lead roles.

Brad Pitt's Mom Jane Dies At 84; Family Says 'We Were Not Ready For You To Go Yet'
Jane Pitt, a retired school counselor, raised Brad and his siblings - Doug and Julie - in Springfield, Missouri, alongside their father. Brad Pitt is grieving the loss of his beloved mother, Jane Pitt, who passed away at the age of 84. Jane, a retired school counselor, raised Brad and his siblings – Doug and Julie – in Springfield, Missouri, alongside their father, William Pitt, a former trucking company owner. Though the family kept a low profile, Jane occasionally stepped into the public eye to support her Oscar-winning son, attending red carpets including the 2012 Oscars and the 2014 premiere of Unbroken, directed by then-daughter-in-law Angelina Jolie. On Wednesday, August 6, Brad's niece Sydney — Doug's daughter — shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. Calling Jane 'the biggest heart," she wrote, 'My sweet Grammy, we were not ready for you to go yet but knowing you are finally free to sing, dance, and paint again makes it a tad easier." Sydney added, 'She could keep up with all 14 of us grandkids without missing a beat. There was no limit to the love she gave, and everyone who met her felt it. I don't know how we move forward without her." Jane Pitt was not only a dedicated mother and grandmother but also a passionate supporter of children's health. In 2009, Brad and his siblings donated $1 million to open the Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center in Missouri. The facility brought the region its first pediatric oncologist and hematologist, demonstrating the family's commitment to meaningful change. Even as recently as June 2025, Brad Pitt paid tribute to his mom during a press interview for his film F1. Speaking to Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, he smiled and said, 'I gotta say hi to my mom because she watches you every morning. To Jane Pitt. Love you, Mom," before blowing a kiss on camera. Jane's deep impact on her children's lives was evident in a 2018 video for WorldServe International. 'I'm very proud of all my children," she said. 'They see a need and try to step in and fill it… It's an amazing thing." Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Anupam Kher breaks silence on Saiyaara dominating Tanvi The Great at box office: 'Agar paisa hi sab kuch hota...'
Comparisons and competition are unavoidable when two movies are released at roughly the same time. That's precisely what happened when Mohit Suri 's elegant romantic drama Saiyaara and Anupam Kher 's touching drama Tanvi The Great opened in theaters on the same day. Tanvi The Great failed to achieve the same level of commercial success as the latter, which dominated the box office with over Rs 500 crore and captured the hearts of the public with its music and youthful star cast. However, it isn't keeping Anupam Kher up at night. He believes that movies are about feelings rather than profits. When asked if he believes the Saiyaara craze is to blame for his film's poor performance, the veteran actor responded, "I don't believe that's true," in an interview with News18. 'A few years down the line, when someone will ask you what are your five favorite films are, you won't name the ones based on which of these movies made a business worth crores." The actor continued, "You'll name the ones which touched your hearts." 'Maybe Tanvi the Great didn't mint much money, but it is still priceless. I recently met a lady outside the theater who hugged me tightly and started crying, saying this was the best film she has ever watched," Kher added. Kher's remarks provided a much-needed break in a society that is fixated on numbers. 'You don't value everything based only on money. Agar paisa hi sab kuch hota, to phir log hamesha five-star hotel me hi khate na, dhaba koi kyu jata?" He revealed that he firmly supports his film in spite of the poor collections. 'My film is outstanding commercially," he stated. Tanvi The Great is subtly capturing hearts, while Saiyaara continues to rule the screen thanks to its box office power and Gen-Z appeal. Anupam Kher is the film's producer and director. He co-stars with Iain Glen. On July 18, 2025, Tanvi the Great was released in theaters.

Imtiaz Ali defends Shah Rukh Khan's National Award win for Jawan: 'If the country has honoured him...'
In response to the controversy surrounding Shah Rukh Khan's recent National Award win for the movie "Jawan," filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has publicly defended the actor, telling IANS that it was a proud moment while speaking on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai. 'No, no. If the country has honoured him, it's obviously a big thing. I would like to congratulate Shah Rukh Khan and all the people who got this big award. Thank you," he stated, sending his best wishes to each and every recipient. Shah Rukh Khan's performance in the movie "Jawan" earned him his first National Award for Best Actor on August 1. Urvashi, a South actress, started the controversy by quietly casting doubt on SRK's National Award victory. Urvashi pointed to the jury's unfair decisions while accepting the Best Supporting Actress award for "Ullozhukku." She allegedly questioned what made Jawan deserving of Best Actor honors, without specifically mentioning Shah Rukh, while veteran Malayalam actor Vijayaraghavan's stirring performance wasn't even taken into consideration for the lead category. Online discussion was sparked by her comments. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They were so beautiful before; look at them now; number 10 will Surprise you Undo However, some internet users were shocked to understand that Shah Rukh Khan had won the National Award for "Jawan," wondering why it had taken him 33 years to receive this honor. Many noted that he was not given credit for some of his most famous roles in movies like "Devdas," "Swades," "Veer Zaara," and "Chak De! India." The actor's victory generated discussion regarding the jury's selection criteria and timing. Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna defended Shah Rukh Khan in the face of increasing criticism over the actor's National Award victory. "People who are saying that Shah Rukh Khan should not have received the award for this film (Jawan) but for Swades—remember A. R. Rahman received the Oscar for 'Jai Ho' and not for the various beautiful songs he created in the past," he informed IANS. "Shah Rukh has been working hard for the past 40 years now—so what is wrong if he has received a National Award?"
