370 families evicted from Madrasi Camp, Stalin writes to Delhi CM
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin has written to his Delhi counterpart Rekha Gupta expressing deep concern over the humanitarian crisis following the demolition of the Madrasi Camp in Jangpura, New Delhi, on June 1. In the letter, Stalin highlighted that the eviction has left 370 Tamil families homeless, many of whom have been residing in Delhi for decades and contributing significantly to its economy.
The CM pointed out that, as per the Delhi High Court's directive, 189 families had been allotted EWS flats in Narela. However, these units remain uninhabitable due to lack of essential amenities. No dedicated bus or metro rail connectivity is available, despite the relocation site being nearly 20 km away. The remaining 181 families have not been offered any alternative housing and continue to live in dire conditions, he said.
Stalin urged the Delhi government to expedite the completion of flats, extend housing eligibility through special relaxations for the 181 unaccommodated families, establish provisional Tamil-medium school, and offer livelihood support – especially to displaced women – through vocational training and micro-enterprise grants. The letter was handed over to Delhi CM by former union minister TR Baalu, accompanied by Tamil Nadu government's Delhi representative AKS Vijayan and Tamil Nadu house resident commissioner Ashish Kumar.

Call for gender justice marks LIC women's conference in Madurai
Enactment of strict laws to curb sexual violence and provision of menopausal leave for women employees were among the issues pressed through separate resolutions which were passed during the 39th conference of Madurai Division LIC Working Women's Sub-Committee held here on Saturday. The conference highlighted the concerns around gender justice, rights of transgender persons and the need for inclusive policies for women employees. Speaking at the event, sub-committee convenor T. Chitra highlighted their ongoing efforts towards gender sensitisation, fostering a gender inclusive perspective and actively intervening against gender-based discrimination. More than joining together as workers, uniting as workers with a broader understanding of gender and equality was more important, she said. Transgender activist and managing trustee of Transgender Resource Center C. Priya Babu, who was the chief guest, termed the event a 'gender equality conference' as it sought to have the presence of transgenders and honour them. 'When a child is born, the first question we ask is 'Is it a boy or a girl?'. The way we frame that question shows our deep-rooted biases, often placing more value on one over the other,' she said. Asking why courage was associated with men and kitchen with women, she invoked classical Tamil works such as Tholkappiyam, Silapathikaram and Seevaga Sindhamani to illustrate how Tamil society once held the transgender community in high regard, a recognition that had since diminished. The conference felicitated seven-year-old Guinness World Record holder and taekwondo trainer N. Samyuktha. 'I dream of winning an Olympic gold,' she said, noting that she could make 136 hits in a minute. Kavi Sundar, a transgender doctor, was also honoured. The conference passed several resolutions urging concrete actions on various issues, including condemnation of the ongoing targeting of women and children in the Israeli war against Palestine, enactment of strict laws to curb sexual violence, establishment of childcare centres, legal safeguards for transgender persons and enactment of a special law to prevent caste-based honour killings. General secretary of the employees union N.P. Rameshkannan summarised the proceedings.

47 Tamil medium students now will be part of midday meal scheme in Idukki
As many as 47 upper primary (UP) Tamil medium students of the Udumbanchola Government High School in Idukki will now be part of the midday meal scheme. According to officials, a lower primary Tamil medium school began in the tea plantation sector of Udumbanchola in 1999. The State government upgraded this school to a high school in the 2011-12 academic year. However, the upper primary section of the school was functioning here without a government approval. Therefore, the UP students were not eligible for the midday meal scheme or other government assistance. In February 2024, the headteacher of the school submitted an application to the Food Commission, requesting to include the upper primary students in the midday meal scheme. Based on this request, the Food Commission asked the Deputy Director of Education in Idukki to provide a report, which recommended to include the students in the scheme. Order issued The Food Commission had in November 2024 directed the State government to take steps to include the students in the scheme. The Director of General Education was recently issued an order to include the students in the scheme. State Food Commission Chairperson Ginu Zacharia Oommen said that the 47 upper primary students belong to the plantation sector and are from low-income families. 'The Commission had asked the State government to consider this a special case and to include the students in the midday meal scheme,' said Dr. Oommen. The midday meal scheme will be helpful to the students as well as their parents,' he added. According to officials, only students in government approved schools are eligible for the midday meal scheme (officially known as PM-POSHAN), a Centrally-sponsored scheme.
