Madibaz netballers ready to ‘embrace the moment' at home USSA tournament

The Herald27-06-2025
The Madibaz women's netball team will feed off the energy of home support to lighten the weight of expectation at the University Sports SA tournament that gets under way in Gqeberha on Monday.
The annual student event, which will be played on the indoor and outdoor courts of Mandela University's South and North campuses, features 35 women's and 20 men's teams.
The host institution's women will compete in the Super and the men in the Premier section of Division A.
Women's coach Jeanie Steyn said it was the first time since 2014 that the university would host the tournament and that there was a sense of expectation in the camp.
Their 'wide network of supporters' did not often get the opportunity to watch them and they are 'thrilled' to be able to do so, the former Protea said.
While there was usually pressure on the hosts to perform, Steyn said they viewed it as an opportunity instead.
'We're ready to embrace the moment.'
Herself a former USSA player, she highlighted the benefits of competing in familiar surroundings.
'There's comfort in knowing the surface, the venue and the weather.
'It removes the uncertainty and allows the players to focus fully on their own game, the team and their performance.'
Despite these advantages, she is under no illusion about the tough week ahead as the women are grouped with the top six teams in the country.
The NWU Eagles will be more familiar with the local conditions than most, as they have competed in the Madibaz Netball Tournament for the past three years.
'That's one of the matchups our players are especially looking forward to,' Steyn said.
By all accounts, the preparation of the Madibaz squads have been smooth sailing.
With six of the university's 12 players involved in the Telkom National League, it has afforded the coaching staff the freedom to develop the more junior members of the team.
In addition, they have the luxury of being able to field a variety of combinations for different styles of play.
'This is a huge benefit from a coaching perspective,' Steyn admitted.
Seven of the current squad have USSA experience.
'Our senior players have really stepped up, setting the standard while guiding and encouraging the younger ones to raise their game.
'What the newcomers may lack in experience, they more than make up for in enthusiasm and eagerness to grow,' Steyn explained.
'It's an absolute pleasure to coach them.'
She described the event as a 'fantastic opportunity for our players and netball fans in the region'.
'We don't often get to host elite university teams in Gqeberha,' Steyn said.
Kaylin Coetzer's swansong will be one of the emotional highlights of the week.
'It will be a special occasion for her, playing her last USSA tournament in front of family and friends. We're hoping to make it one to remember.' — Full Stop Communications

Chippa fire another coach, Nyatama set to take over, Mammila new assistant

A source within the Chilli Boys' camp told The Herald that Sinethemba Badela has been relieved of his duties as the team's head coach and replaced by former Swallows coach and current Chippa assistant, Musa Nyatama. The 37-year-old Nyatama joined Chippa United after having been at the helm of relegated Motsepe Foundation Championship side Leruma United last season. The Chippa source said Morgan Mamilla, who came back to Chippa United again, this time as the club's team manager, will act as Nyatama's assistant. This comes after the Gqeberha side suffered their first league defeat in Durban on Wednesday night. Chippa lost 1-0 against league rookies Durban City at Chatsworth Stadium. The loss followed a solid 1-1 draw against league defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns on the opening day of the league season. The Herald approached Badela for confirmation, but he had not responded. The Herald

Rolling thunder returns to EL Grand Prix Circuit

The iconic East London Grand Prix Circuit will once again reverberate to the sound of thunderous racing engines when the Dunlop V8 Supercars return to thrill the crowds at next weekend's Regional Extreme Festival presented by Coca-Cola. This will be the fifth round of the championship, which should have taken place in Maputo in Mozambique, but due to the ongoing political uncertainties there, the switch was made to head to East London to the fastest track in SA. Border Motorsport chairperson Andrew Karshagen was upbeat about hosting their second Extreme Festival in 2025. 'We haven't had the V8s in East London for many years, so the drivers haven't really had the opportunity to stretch the legs of those big engines because no other circuit in South Africa is as quick as ours, with the two quickest corners that you'll find on a racetrack, so the spectators will have the chance to see these cars on the absolute limit,' Karshagen said. 'We are also very excited to have the BMW M-Performance Parts series, which is currently the biggest class in the country, the DOE Formula Vee single seaters and the Ferro Energia 111/GT Sports and Saloons, including Super Hatch all taking part. 'A lot of work has gone into repairing parts of the circuit as well as the clubhouse and pit facilities, so we hope for another full house next Saturday.' The BMW M-Performance Parts series continues to flourish with already 41 entries received, and more set to join, and they will be divided into two separate race groups as they head to East London for the first time. The series, with few technical rules, has attracted a wide variety of BMWs from almost standard road-going cars to high-performance racing machines. Added to the mix will be a couple of well-known local racers from both East London and Gqeberha joining in on the action. The Ferro Energia 111/GT Sports and Saloons sees a broad spectrum of cars competing in six different classes and has already attracted a field of 22 cars, including the likes of local stars Shaun Gradwell, Wayne Botha, Paul Berry, Mark Els and Stephan Aucamp. All classes will run two heats on the day, with qualifying set to start at 8am and racing from 10am. The Herald

Blame me and not the players — Badela

Chippa United head coach Sinethemba Badela has defended his players, saying if people want someone to blame for their 1-0 defeat against Betway Premiership league rookies Durban City, fingers should be pointed at him. The Gqeberha side endured their first league loss of the season after Joslin Kamatuka of City netted a late second-half goal, which sank the Chilli Boys. The Wednesday night fixture, which took place at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban, was Chippa's first away match for the season. Chippa opened their league campaign with a 1-1 draw against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. After Wednesday night's showdown, Badela was asked about his players' performance against Durban City compared with how they played against Sundowns. The Chilli Boys were reportedly aggressive against the Brazilians but less so against City. 'No, I wouldn't blame the players, it's the coach [who should be blamed],' Badela said. 'That performance against Sundowns, it's the players, they did well. This performance today is not good enough, so it's the coach. 'I have to look at myself first, before I blame the players. 'I have to look at myself, if the preparation was good enough, did we give the players confidence for them to play, did we give the players enough tools and preparation for this game. 'So, before we go to the players, we have to start with me. So, I have to first look at myself, and from there, we will review the performance. We'll take it from there.' The former Sundowns youth coach had warned his players that playing against Durban City would not be a walk in the park. 'We knew it was going to be a difficult game against a strong team. 'I warned my players that this Durban City team is not an easy team to play against. We watched a few of their games. 'They are a hard-running team, they load your box, they are physical. So we could not match the physicality, and they created better chances than us. 'I don't think we deserve anything in this game, but I cannot blame the players. I will take this loss on me. 'I think maybe I could have done better with the team that I chose, because we came from a very difficult game, and you could see in the last 15 minutes, we started to run out of legs, and they pinned us in our half. 'We could not get out of our half, and the solution that we chose was to go long, which is not always the solution, because the quicker the ball goes forward is the quicker it comes back. 'Eventually, they got that chance in the second half, I think it was the only chance that they had in the second half, and they punished us and we lost 1-0.' Badela said they would now prepare for their next league match against TS Galaxy at the Buffalo City Stadium on Tuesday night (7.30pm). The Herald
