Burton secure League One safety with draw against Wigan

BBC News29-04-2025
Rumarn Burrell was on target as Burton claimed the point they needed to secure League One safety in their penultimate match of the season following a draw with Wigan at Pirelli Stadium. The striker's 11th goal of the campaign looked to have given Albion all three points until Ronan Darcy curled in an effort from distance in the closing moments of second-half stoppage-time to claim a share of the spoils. The hosts were all but secure ahead of the game – courtesy of their goal difference – but their point confirmed relegation for both Crawley and Bristol Rovers ahead of the final weekend of the season.
The first half was lacking in clear goal attempts from either side. Albion started positively looking for the point that would guarantee their status in the English third tier for another season, but could not fashion a clear chance on Sam Tickle's goal.Charlie Webster – on his return from suspension – had Albion's best sight of goal as he burst through onto Finn Delap's pass but fired over the top.Wigan, the lowest scorers in the division, threatened from a series of corners late in the half but the home side defended doggedly.Their best chance fell to former Burton winger Jonny Smith, who fired straight at goalkeeper Max Crocombe. But Burton got the goal they craved just shy of the hour mark. Saturday's hero Dylan Williams supplied the cross, substitute Mason Bennett forced an outstanding save from Tickle, but leading scorer Burrell was on hand to bury the rebound.Dale Taylor twice went close to an equaliser as he fired a rising drive over the crossbar before forcing a good save from Crocombe. While Darcy finally got the better of Albion's keeper with a speculative effort from almost the last kick of the game.Report supplied by PA Media.

Cleverley to examine reasons for Argyle's poor start

Plymouth Argyle head coach Tom Cleverley says everyone at the club must look at why the side has lost their opening two League One Pilgrims - who were relegated from the Championship last season - failed to have a shot on target as they went down 2-0 at Bolton Wanderers on came seven days after a 3-1 opening day loss at home to Barnsley that was marred by defensive errors and a host of missed chances. "It's down for everyone at the football club to do an internal reflection of themselves," Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon."Where can we make this better? I will work largely on the technical aspect of that and the balance of the team."I'm sure every other person at the football club, staff and players, will look within themselves, which is the most important thing."I think if I can say two things I've learned from hard times is work harder and look in the mirror first." Argyle have not lost their opening two league games since the start of the 2016-17 season they then went on a 14-game unbeaten run in the league that saw them win 11 games and was the foundation for a season that saw them go on to finish second in League Two on goal difference. But Argyle's lack of attacking options were made evident by the loss at lost players including Ryan Hardie and Mustapha Bundu over the summer, Argyle have signed young forwards Bim Pepple and Owen the club has still not been able to secure the services of an experienced first-choice striker. Cleverley says they are still searching for a new forward and is hopeful of some success soon."If we want to go after the ambitions that we have at this club we need strengthening," Cleverley added."A significant bid has been placed. First one rejected, second one placed and that's where we're at."We're into plan C, D and E now, but that's why you have a plan C, D and E because rarely does plan A get executed if you don't have the budget of some of the other clubs in the league."

Conor Coady confident Wrexham can cope with Championship spotlight

Conor Coady says Wrexham aim to 'upset and disrupt' Championship teams on their return to the second tier of English football. Wrexham marked their return to the level after a 43-year absence at Southampton on Saturday when a late Saints double condemned them to a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat. Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were not present on the south coast to see Wrexham suffer, perhaps waiting until West Brom's visit to the SToK Racecourse on Saturday for their first taste of Championship action. There has been inordinate external noise around Wrexham due to their celebrity owners and three successive promotions taking them from the National League to the Championship in record time, but summer addition Coady insists Phil Parkinson's squad can handle the fierce spotlight. 'We're going to cope with it,' said Coady, the 32-year-old England international who was used to Premier League football at Wolves, Everton and Leicester. 'We know what we are. We know how we're going to play and we're here to upset and disrupt a few teams in this division. 'We'll keep on trying to do that. We've shown we can play. We'll keep building, we'll keep improving. 'We have to improve, we have to get better. That's the biggest thing.' Coady, one of seven players who made their Wrexham debuts at Southampton after heavy summer investment from Reynolds and McElhenney, admits to being shocked by huge interest in the Welsh club. The 32-year-old watched the friendly against Groningen in the Netherlands last week when 'the people there for Wrexham was unbelievable' and Ollie Palmer – a star of the 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary series – 'got mobbed'. Coady said: 'It's amazing to see where this club has gone. I have so much respect for what this club has done since the National League to get to this point. 'But we're at a point now where we don't just enjoy being here. We want to improve and mix ourselves with teams like this (Southampton). 'Maybe go higher, but to do that we have to make sure we're dominant at this level and get to that level as quick as we can. 'What we've got to do is take it one game at a time, but let's enjoy the ride. 'Let's not take anything away from it. Southampton were in the Premier League last season, Wrexham were in League One. 'So we're in a position now where we're fighting with these teams, showing we can play, and showing we've got an idea.' Wrexham play Championship rivals Hull at home in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Tottenham in talks for Man City star with winger open to shock move

Tottenham are in talks with Manchester City over a shock move for Savinho, with the winger reportedly open to the switch. It is a summer of significant change at Spurs after Thomas Frank replaced Ange Postecoglou as manager and the club prepare to return to the Champions League after Europa League glory. Son Heung-min has left after 10 years and it feels like a changing of the guard in north London under the Dane. Incomings have been slow to arrive, with permanent deals confirmed for the likes of Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso who were at the club last season and Mohammed Kudus and Luka Vuskovic the only major new arrivals so far. Frank wants to change that before the transfer window closes, and ideally before the season starts this weekend. In something of a surprising turn of events, Spurs have turned their attention to Manchester City winger Savinho as they look to bolster their ranks. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that talks are underway between the two clubs and the Brazil international is open to the move if a fee can be agreed. The report states that Frank personally identified Savinho as an ideal target for his project. The 21-year-old has had just one season with Manchester City, making 48 appearances in all competitions and scoring three goals. The Brazilian made 21 starts in the Premier League, with eight more appearances from the bench, yielding one goal and eight assists. They might not be spectacular numbers, but the winger looked impressive in his first season as he adapted to English football and is highly rated, as his 13 caps for Brazil illustrate. Apps: 29 Goals: 1 Assists: 8 Savinho joined Manchester City from Girona in 2024 after an excellent season in Spain which saw him score 11 goals in 41 outings. Manchester City paid just over £30m for Savinho last year and if Spurs want him this summer they will likely have to pay a lot more than that for his signature. Pep Guardiola's squad is well-stocked with forwards, boosted by the arrival of Rayan Cherki from Lyon earlier this summer. More Trending He joins the likes of Jeremy Doku, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Oscar Bobb and Omar Marmoush who are competing for the three roles behind centre forward Erling Haaland. Jack Grealish also remains at the Etihad but is expected to leave this summer, with Everton in talks over a loan deal for the England international. Manchester City get their Premier League campaign underway on Saturday evening away at Wolves. Spurs begin their first season under Frank in a 3pm kick-off at home to newly-promoted Burnley.
