Fan petition to strip Jon Jones of UFC title passes 100,000 signatures
The fans want Dana White and the UFC brass to end Jon Jones' reign as heavyweight champion by force.
With uncertainty still surrounding whether Jones (28-1 MMA, 22-1 UFC) will push back retirement plans for a title unification bout with interim champion Tom Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC), a petition for the promotion to strip Jones of his belt has now crossed six figures.
Exactly two weeks ago, a "Petition to strip Jon Jones of the undisputed UFC heavyweight belt" was launched on Change.org. The signatures have stacked up at a rapid pace, and as of Wednesday afternoon the number exceeded 115,000.
Jones has acknowledged the petition within comments on Instagram, mocking its existence and reiterating that he's living his "best life" and totally unconcerned about fan's clamoring for answers.
The biggest figures of the sport have chimed in on the saga. Michael Bisping urged Jones to "defend or vacate," Chael Sonnen said the world is "caring less and less" about a Jones vs. Aspinall fight, and an optimistic Daniel Cormier recently said he thinks it will actually happen.
Jones has competed just twice since leaving the light heavyweight division in February 2021. He defeated Ciryl Gane for the vacant heavyweight belt previously held by Francis Ngannou in March 2023, then defended against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November.
Aspinall, meanwhile, won the interim strap with a quick knockout of Sergei Pavlovich in November 2023, then recorded a rare interim title defense over Curtis Blaydes in July.
UFC CEO Dana White previously "guaranteed" Jones vs. Aspinall would happen this year and has remained steadfast it will materialize despite all the public speculation.

Kayla Harrison fed up with Julianna Peña's trash talk: 'Just poorly done'

Kayla Harrison fed up with Julianna Peña's trash talk: 'Just poorly done' Kayla Harrison has had enough of Julianna Peña. Show Caption Hide Caption UFC 316: Kayla Harrison media day interview UFC 316 co-headliner Kayla Harrison spoke to MMA Junkie and reporters at media day for her women's bantamweight title fight vs. Julianna Peña. MORRISTOWN, N.J. – Kayla Harrison can't wait till she's locked in the octagon with Julianna Peña. Sure, Harrison (18-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) dreams of dethroning Peña (13-5 MMA, 8-3 UFC) at UFC 316, and getting a hold of the UFC women's bantamweight title, but she also just wants to get the pre-fight banter and trash talk over with. Harrison and Peña have gone back and forth over the last few months, with the champion doing most of the talking – which Harrison finds quite bad. "I think hands down this is the most trash talk (I've endured)," Harrison said at the UFC 316 media day on Wednesday. "The talk itself is trashy. I don't know if it's good trash talk, but it's trashy. This is the most I've ever had to endure. Yeah, it's the worst trash talk I've had to endure, it's just poorly done. I'll tell you what. Being a female in a male dominated sport, going to American Top Team, you don't think I hear sh*t all day every day? I walk in the gym, and they're starting to (talk trash). But this was just poorly done. I'm ready to fight. I'm done talking about it." UFC 316 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) takes place Saturday at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Peña vs. Harrison serves as the co-main event of the card. Harrison is not interested in going engaging with the pre-fight antics with Peña, nor tearing her down. She does, however, promise she'll be sitting at the top of the women's bantamweight division come Sunday. "I feel nothing. I focus on myself," Harrison said. "I focus on how I carry myself, what I can do. I try not to throw stones from a glass house. Nobody is perfect, we're all doing the best we can, but there's going to be a new face of women's MMA very soon."

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts gifts pink toy luxury car to Shohei Ohtani's baby daughter

(AP Photo/Jayne Kamin-Oncea) LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and his wife have gifted Shohei Ohtani's baby daughter with a pink toy Porsche. Ohtani posted a video of him, Roberts and the toy car on his Instagram account. Advertisement 'We had a little running practical-joke situation going on,' Roberts said Wednesday, 'but this was a gift for the baby.' Last May, Roberts joked that Ohtani should give him a Porsche when the slugger broke the Dodgers record for most home runs by a Japanese player. Ohtani obliged, gifting a purple toy model Porsche for Roberts' office. In breaking the record, Ohtani surpassed the mark set by Roberts, who was born in Japan, during his playing days. Ohtani went slightly bigger in March, when he left another toy Porsche in Roberts' parking space at Camelback Ranch in Arizona. Ohtani gifted Ashley Kelly, wife of Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly, a Porsche for her husband giving up his No. 17 when Ohtani signed with the Dodgers in December 2023. Advertisement Ohtani's first child was born on April 19. He and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, have not revealed the baby's name or any other information in keeping with Ohtani's penchant for privacy. Ohtani's reaction to the gift from Roberts and his wife Tricia? 'He was very grateful,' Roberts said. ___ AP MLB:

'Dead giveaway' makes Dan Hardy think Sean O'Malley beats Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 316

'Dead giveaway' makes Dan Hardy think Sean O'Malley beats Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 316 Sean O'Malley's most significant moment against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306 should be his target for the rematch, says Dan Hardy. O'Malley (18-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) lost his bantamweight title to Dvalishvili by unanimous decision last September. He wasn't able to land too many clean strikes, but a teep to the body had Dvalishvili (19-4 MMA, 12-2 UFC) backing up late in Round 5. As they prepare to run things back in Saturday's UFC 316 headliner (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., Hardy urges O'Malley to invest in his bodywork. "Sean O'Malley is going to feel like he needs to be more proactive in trying to find finishes," Hardy said on his YouTube channel. "Because that last round went the way that it did with the front kick to the midsection and Merab being hurt and looking up at the clock, I mean, that was a dead giveaway. The obvious target for Merab is his midsection." O'Malley captured the bantamweight title with a perfectly placed counter-right hand on Aljamain Sterling's chin at UFC 292. Hardy advises O'Malley to break down Dvalishvili before trying to find the kill shot. "In that last round, I think O'Malley realized there was another route to victory other than landing a clean punch on the chin, and that was damaging his body," Hardy added. "Potentially there was a game plan to come in and attack the body against Merab, but the mistake they were making was that O'Malley was using his cross, which was leaving his head open to that swiping lead hook that Merab does so well. If I'm O'Malley, of course I'm expecting the wrestling threat, but I can't let that hold me back. I still need to be aggressive and on the front foot. I need to be picking at Merab so he doesn't feel like he can set the pace and have his own way. "Especially if Merab is controlling the pace more in this fight like he was in the last one, where he's taking moments, where he's resting. That's where Sean O'Malley needs to be proactive. Front kicks to the midsection are going to be the obvious way for Sean O'Malley to open this. If he can do damage, if he he can sap the gas tank of Merab, those front kicks will chain very well with knees up the midsection, which are very good for people that level change constantly. It will be a deterrent for Merab to close range down the centerline, so that's an additional bonus for O'Malley throwing those front kicks and knees down the centerline. ... You have to slow those kind of fighters down and damage them in ways that they kind of can't psychologically deny." Contrary to most pundits, Hardy predicts an O'Malley win. "O'Malley's got the skills and the technique to be able to put Merab away," Hardy said. "But if Merab plays the right game, he should be able to maul and drown O'Malley. Having said that, I think we're going to get a rubber match. I feel like O'Malley might steal this one with something clean as Merab is overextending himself."
