New multiplex launches to boost Kochi's entertainment sector

Time of India19-05-2025

Kochi: The entertainment sector will receive a major boost with several multiplex theatres expected to come up in the city and its suburbs soon.
Besides the existing more than half-a-dozen major multiplex theatres in different shopping malls, at least four more multiplex theatres will come soon.
A noted theatre group based in Kochi will launch a new four-screen multiplex at Kakkanad soon, and another multiplex will be opened in an upcoming major shopping mall at Willingdon Island.
A four-screen multiplex theatre will come up at Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) in Nedumbassery, and a new multiplex will be opened on Chittoor Road soon. A new multiplex is proposed as part of Chithranjali project in Kakkanad.
The twin theatres of Lulu and Mymoon, which closed down 15 years ago, on Chittoor Road will be reopened within four months. They will be revived as a multiplex theatre by Lulu Group in collaboration with PVR Cinemas. The theatre complex is situated on around 2 acres of prime land. Mohanlal's 'Mahasamudram' was the last major release at the theatre. The new project will be a standalone theatre project by PVR group with four to five screens, including a PIXL screen, it is learned.
HiLITE will set up its screens at its Boulevard project near Thoppumpady under its own theatre brand 'Palaxi Cinemas'. The new multiplex to come up at Cial's proposed mall in the airport compound is in the initial stage of discussions.
"Cinema halls, both multiplexes and traditional theatres, have successfully drawn substantial audiences over the last year, contributing to the rapid expansion of multiplexes across urban areas.
While multiplex operators face significant challenges and losses in various states due to film industry difficulties, their operations in Kerala continue to generate substantial profits," said K Vijayakumar, president of Film Exhibitors United Organisations of Kerala (Feuok).
Besides new ones, many theatres are planning major facelifts in the coming months. There are reports of Dolby Laboratories planning to launch Dolby Cinema Screens at an existing multiplex theatre in Fort Kochi.
One of the oldest theatre complexes in the city, Saritha, Savitha and Sangeetha, is under renovation and will be modernised soon. In Dec last year, Cinepolis opened the first Imax screen in Kochi, at Centre Square Mall on MG Road.
The theatre, with seating for 229, has 4K laser projection and a patented sound system.
"The multiplexes boom indicates an increase in city's economic growth. Kochi has the highest number of screens, and new theatres opening is expected to give a boost to the city's growth as the capital of Mollywood," said Arjun Prakash of Kochi Next Forum collective.
The growth of malls has often been closely tied to the rise of multiplexes, as both benefit from increased visitor traffic. Notably, several once-prestigious malls across the state that lack multiplexes are now struggling, with top retailers shutting down. As the middle class continues to grow, more multiplexes are likely to emerge in the city and its suburbs. However, the key to their sustained success lies in the consistent performance of the films they screen.

Throwback: When Mohanlal slapped a person for badmouthing THIS veteran Malayali superstar

Mohanlal is often known for being a calm, composed, and zen person in public interactions. While most of the time, he does not engage in violence, there was an instance where he revealed his state of aggression, which led him to slap a person. In an old interview with the news channel Kairali TV, the Lucifer actor discussed how he had slapped a person for badmouthing a former superstar in the Malayalam cinema industry. As per his words, the actor said, 'You hit someone only when you have no other option, right? However, even now, if such a situation arises, I will do the same. It's a reflex action, isn't it? He continuously ridiculed this certain star for two to three hours.' The actor added, 'Everything has a pinnacle and a zenith, right? You can't go beyond that. At that time, I did it. Even now, that will probably be my reaction if a similar situation arises.' While Mohanlal did not mention the name of the star, it is believed that he was referring to the former Malayali superstar Prem Nazir. For those unaware, the late actor is still considered an irreplaceable part of Malayalam cinema culture, often dubbed as the 'Evergreen Hero.' Moreover, the veteran star played an integral part in Mohanlal's career, sharing the screen in films like Lal Americayil, Aattakalasam, Sanchari, Padayottam, Marakkillorikkalum, Attimari, and many more. Coming to Mohanlal's work front, the superstar was last seen playing the lead role in Thudarum, directed by Tharun Moorthy. The film, which was released on JioHotstar for streaming recently, was a thriller drama featuring the tale of a father and his revenge against the men who caused his son's death. The film featured an ensemble cast of actors, including Shobana, Prakash Varma, Farhaan Faasil, Maniyanpilla Raju, Binu Pappu, Irshad Ali, Aarsha Chandini, Baiju, and many more in key roles. Moving ahead, the actor will be seen in the lead role for the feel-good film Hridayapoorvam, directed by Sathyan Anthikad with Malavika Mohanan as the co-lead. Furthermore, he has films like Vrusshabha, MMMN, Ram, and more in his lineup. Besides the same, he also has a cameo appearance in Vishnu Manchu's Kannappa and is even speculated to appear in Dileep starrer Bha Bha Ba.

When Mohanlal slapped a man for ridiculing one of Malayalam cinema's greatest superstars: ‘I would still do the same'

Although Mohanlal has always projected himself as a peace-loving, calm and composed person, who is not easily swayed or disturbed by life's outcomes, and often appears to be in a near-constant state of zen, there have been instances when the actor lost his cool. In fact, he once admitted to flying into a rage and slapping someone for allegedly badmouthing one of Malayalam cinema's all-time greatest superstars. Mohanlal explained that he endured the person's rambling for as long as he could, but eventually reacted after reaching his tipping point. 'Things like that happen. You hit someone only when you have absolutely no other option, right? However, even now, if such a situation arises, I will do the same,' Mohanlal once shared during an appearance on Kairali TV's JB Junction, a talk show that was hosted by John Brittas, who is now a parliamentarian who represents the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in the Rajya Sabha. He further stated that he resorted to this extreme step because the person, whose identity neither of them disclosed, persistently disparaged legendary actor Prem Nazir for a long time. 'It's a reflex action, isn't it? When someone keeps saying something like that for a long time… He continuously ridiculed that person (Prem Nazir) for two to three hours. Everything has a pinnacle and a zenith, right? You can't go beyond that. At that time, I did it. Even now, that might be my reaction if a similar situation arises,' Mohanlal added. For the uninitiated, Prem Nazir is widely regarded as one of the most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema and is often referred to as Nithyaharitha Nayakan (Evergreen Hero). Besides appearing in as many as 720 films as a lead actor, Nazir also acted opposite the same heroine (Sheela) in 130 films, thus Guinness World Record for 'longest screen partnership'. Mohanlal and Prem Nazir shared the screen in several films, including Lal Americayil (1989), Thenum Vayambum (1981), Aattakalasam (1983), Sanchari (1981), Padayottam (1982), Marakkillorikkalum (1983), Attimari (1981), Ente Katha (1983) and Kadathanadan Ambadi (1990), among others.

Chotta Mumbai is coming back on the big screen and it's like 2007 never left. The iconic Mohanlal-starrer hit theatres again on June 6, 2025, and Malayalis everywhere are turning up in full force to relive the magic. Directed by Anwar Rasheed, this action-comedy gem was the film that defined cool for an entire generation. And now, watching it in all its upgraded 4K glory will ignite pure nostalgia in fans. Videos doing the rounds on social media show packed houses in places like Kottayam, with whistles, cheers, and goosebumps galore. One fan summed it up perfectly on social media, 'Chotta Mumbai is not just about Lalettan. It's a full-blown celebration of legends like Rajan P. Dev, Kalabhavan Mani, Haneefikka, and Jagathy Chettan." Another wrote, 'It's better than many of today's releases! That sound, those visuals, that crowd—it's a lifetime celebration!" The man of the hour, Mohanlal himself, shared a heartfelt message along with a throwback still from the film. He wrote, 'Thanks for all the love. #Chottamumbai4k now in theatres near you!" The film follows Vasco Da Gama aka Thala, played by Lalettan, who's the ultimate carefree rebel with a gang of equally jobless besties. They live life on their own terms—until a showdown with a corrupt cop/gangster shakes things up. The film's legendary lineup includes Indrajith Sukumaran, Jagathy Sreekumar, Kalabhavan Mani, Siddique, Manikuttan, and Bijukuttan. On the work front, Lalettan was last seen in Thudarum, a gripping thriller that's now streaming on JioHotstar. He'll also be making a cameo in Kannappa and is all set to reunite with Sathyan Anthikad for Hridayapoorvam. Mohanlal has enjoyed a remarkable career in Indian cinema for over 40 years, appearing in more than 400 films across genres. Recognising his immense contribution to the industry, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2001 and later the Padma Bhushan in 2019—India's fourth and third highest civilian honours, respectively. In a historic move, Mohanlal was also conferred with the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army in 2009, becoming the first Indian actor to receive such an honour.
