New multiplex launches to boost Kochi's entertainment sector

Time of India19-05-2025

Kochi: The entertainment sector will receive a major boost with several multiplex theatres expected to come up in the city and its suburbs soon.
Besides the existing more than half-a-dozen major multiplex theatres in different shopping malls, at least four more multiplex theatres will come soon.
A noted theatre group based in Kochi will launch a new four-screen multiplex at Kakkanad soon, and another multiplex will be opened in an upcoming major shopping mall at Willingdon Island.
A four-screen multiplex theatre will come up at Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) in Nedumbassery, and a new multiplex will be opened on Chittoor Road soon. A new multiplex is proposed as part of Chithranjali project in Kakkanad.
The twin theatres of Lulu and Mymoon, which closed down 15 years ago, on Chittoor Road will be reopened within four months. They will be revived as a multiplex theatre by Lulu Group in collaboration with PVR Cinemas. The theatre complex is situated on around 2 acres of prime land. Mohanlal's 'Mahasamudram' was the last major release at the theatre. The new project will be a standalone theatre project by PVR group with four to five screens, including a PIXL screen, it is learned.
HiLITE will set up its screens at its Boulevard project near Thoppumpady under its own theatre brand 'Palaxi Cinemas'. The new multiplex to come up at Cial's proposed mall in the airport compound is in the initial stage of discussions.
"Cinema halls, both multiplexes and traditional theatres, have successfully drawn substantial audiences over the last year, contributing to the rapid expansion of multiplexes across urban areas.
While multiplex operators face significant challenges and losses in various states due to film industry difficulties, their operations in Kerala continue to generate substantial profits," said K Vijayakumar, president of Film Exhibitors United Organisations of Kerala (Feuok).
Besides new ones, many theatres are planning major facelifts in the coming months. There are reports of Dolby Laboratories planning to launch Dolby Cinema Screens at an existing multiplex theatre in Fort Kochi.
One of the oldest theatre complexes in the city, Saritha, Savitha and Sangeetha, is under renovation and will be modernised soon. In Dec last year, Cinepolis opened the first Imax screen in Kochi, at Centre Square Mall on MG Road.
The theatre, with seating for 229, has 4K laser projection and a patented sound system.
"The multiplexes boom indicates an increase in city's economic growth. Kochi has the highest number of screens, and new theatres opening is expected to give a boost to the city's growth as the capital of Mollywood," said Arjun Prakash of Kochi Next Forum collective.
The growth of malls has often been closely tied to the rise of multiplexes, as both benefit from increased visitor traffic. Notably, several once-prestigious malls across the state that lack multiplexes are now struggling, with top retailers shutting down. As the middle class continues to grow, more multiplexes are likely to emerge in the city and its suburbs. However, the key to their sustained success lies in the consistent performance of the films they screen.

Mohanlal's maternal uncle, who gave superstar his iconic name, passes away at 93

Trigger: The article contains a mention of death. Mohanlal is a popular superstar in Indian cinema. His stardom is so grand that just his name is enough to remind people who he is. But, do you know where he got this name from? In this article, we will explain in detail about the person who gave Mohanlal his iconic name. Read on. The actor's maternal uncle, Gopinathan Nair, seemingly gave him this name when he was initially called Roshanlal. Sadly, the man behind the superstar's identity is no longer here. The actor's uncle has passed away at the age of 93. According to OnManorama, Nair succumbed to his death on June 9, 2025, at Mata Amritanandamayi's ashram in Amritapuri. He was residing at the ashram for 14 years. The actor's maternal uncle served as the general manager of the Alappuzha District Cooperative Bank before moving to the ashram. He shared a good connection with the superstar for many years. For those unaware, Mohanlal was born on May 21, 1960, in the village of Elanthoor, Pathanamthitta. The veteran superstar is the younger son of the former Kerala government Law Secretary, Viswanathan Nair, and his wife, Santhakumari. While it was Gopinathan Nair who suggested the actor's first name, Mohanlal's father decided to give him a patronymic surname, letting go of the family name, which holds a caste identity. Interestingly, the actor's late uncle had also named his elder brother as Pyarelal, who passed away back in 2000 due to health issues. Coming to Mohanlal's work front, the actor was last seen in a leading role in Thudarum. The film, directed by Tharun Moorthy, is a crime thriller that features a father's vengeful journey in order to vanquish the people responsible for his son's demise. With the superstar in the lead, it also featured actors like Shobana, Prakash Varma, Farhaan Faasil, Maniyanpilla Raju, Binu Pappu, Irshad Ali, Aarsha Chandini Baiju, and many more in key roles. It is currently available for streaming on JioHotstar. Moreover, the actor is next set to appear in the lead role in Hridayapoorvam, with Malavika Mohanan as the co-lead. Apart from this, he also has films like Vrusshaba and Kannappa (cameo role) in the lineup. Furthermore, the superstar's blockbuster flick Chotta Mumbai has recently been re-released and is running successfully in theaters.

When Mohanlal lost his cool; Slapped someone for insulting a Malayalam superstar

Mohanlal, the legendary actor known for his calm and collected public persona, once made headlines for an incident that starkly contrasted his usually zen-like demeanor. In a rare throwback revelation, the 'Lucifer' star admitted to slapping someone—not out of rage, but as a reflex to a situation that tested his patience beyond limit. In an old interview with Kairali TV, Mohanlal spoke about the incident that led him to take an uncharacteristically aggressive step. Without naming names, he recalled, 'You hit someone only when you have no other option, right? Even now, if such a situation arises, I will do the same. It's a reflex action, isn't it? He continuously ridiculed this certain star for two to three hours.' The actor went on to say, 'Everything has a pinnacle and a zenith, right? You can't go beyond that. At that time, I did it. Even now, that will probably be my reaction if a similar situation arises.' While Mohanlal did not mention who the insult was directed at, it is widely believed that the person being defended was none other than Prem Nazir —the late legend fondly remembered as the 'Evergreen Hero' of Malayalam cinema. Prem Nazir wasn't just an icon; he was someone who played a pivotal role in Mohanlal's early career. The two have shared screen space in several iconic films such as Lal Americayil, Aattakalasam, Sanchari, Padayottam, and Attimari. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Despite being known for his grace under pressure, this moment revealed Mohanlal's unwavering loyalty and deep respect for the legends who shaped Malayalam cinema. Up next, he'll star in 'Hridayapoorvam', a feel-good film directed by Sathyan Anthikad and co-starring Malavika Mohanan . He also has a packed slate ahead with films like 'Vrusshabha', 'MMMN', 'Ram', and cameo appearances in 'Kannappa' and possibly 'Bha Bha Ba'.

Mohanlal's maternal uncle Gopinathan Nair, who gave him his name, passes away at 93

(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Malayalam cinema's beloved icon Mohanlal may be known across the world today, but few know the touching story behind his name. It wasn't his parents who named him — the honour goes to his maternal uncle, Gopinathan Nair. As reported by On Manorama, at a time when the family was leaning toward naming the baby Roshan Lal, it was Nair who suggested 'Mohanlal', believing it had a charm and uniqueness that would stand the test of time. His instinct proved prophetic. Mohanlal would later say that the name never gave him trouble — even when it stood out for being uncommon. A life rooted in simplicity and service Gopinathan Nair led a life of deep commitment and humility. He served as the general manager of the Alappuzha District Cooperative Bank and later chose a spiritually fulfilling path by becoming a full-time resident of Mata Amritanandamayi's ashram in Amritapuri. For the past 14 years, he lived there in devotion and service. It was also Nair who introduced Mohanlal to Mata Amritanandamayi, a connection the actor has held close over the years.
