New multiplex launches to boost Kochi's entertainment sector
Kochi: The entertainment sector will receive a major boost with several multiplex theatres expected to come up in the city and its suburbs soon.
Besides the existing more than half-a-dozen major multiplex theatres in different shopping malls, at least four more multiplex theatres will come soon.
A noted theatre group based in Kochi will launch a new four-screen multiplex at Kakkanad soon, and another multiplex will be opened in an upcoming major shopping mall at Willingdon Island.
A four-screen multiplex theatre will come up at Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) in Nedumbassery, and a new multiplex will be opened on Chittoor Road soon. A new multiplex is proposed as part of Chithranjali project in Kakkanad.
The twin theatres of Lulu and Mymoon, which closed down 15 years ago, on Chittoor Road will be reopened within four months. They will be revived as a multiplex theatre by Lulu Group in collaboration with PVR Cinemas. The theatre complex is situated on around 2 acres of prime land. Mohanlal's 'Mahasamudram' was the last major release at the theatre. The new project will be a standalone theatre project by PVR group with four to five screens, including a PIXL screen, it is learned.
HiLITE will set up its screens at its Boulevard project near Thoppumpady under its own theatre brand 'Palaxi Cinemas'. The new multiplex to come up at Cial's proposed mall in the airport compound is in the initial stage of discussions.
"Cinema halls, both multiplexes and traditional theatres, have successfully drawn substantial audiences over the last year, contributing to the rapid expansion of multiplexes across urban areas.
While multiplex operators face significant challenges and losses in various states due to film industry difficulties, their operations in Kerala continue to generate substantial profits," said K Vijayakumar, president of Film Exhibitors United Organisations of Kerala (Feuok).
Besides new ones, many theatres are planning major facelifts in the coming months. There are reports of Dolby Laboratories planning to launch Dolby Cinema Screens at an existing multiplex theatre in Fort Kochi.
One of the oldest theatre complexes in the city, Saritha, Savitha and Sangeetha, is under renovation and will be modernised soon. In Dec last year, Cinepolis opened the first Imax screen in Kochi, at Centre Square Mall on MG Road.
The theatre, with seating for 229, has 4K laser projection and a patented sound system.
"The multiplexes boom indicates an increase in city's economic growth. Kochi has the highest number of screens, and new theatres opening is expected to give a boost to the city's growth as the capital of Mollywood," said Arjun Prakash of Kochi Next Forum collective.
The growth of malls has often been closely tied to the rise of multiplexes, as both benefit from increased visitor traffic. Notably, several once-prestigious malls across the state that lack multiplexes are now struggling, with top retailers shutting down. As the middle class continues to grow, more multiplexes are likely to emerge in the city and its suburbs. However, the key to their sustained success lies in the consistent performance of the films they screen.

‘Narivetta' box office collections day 19: Tovino starrer slows down; mints Rs 17.37 crores
(Picture Courtesy: Facebook) Tovino Thomas' gripping Malayalam thriller 'Narivetta' has begun to lose steam at the box office as it enters its third week. After clocking a solid opening week with Rs 9.9 crore, the film's collections have noticeably slowed down. By the end of Day 19, its total earnings have reached Rs 17.37 crore—a decent figure, though the signs of fatigue are showing. Strong opening, followed by a drop According to the Sacnilk website, the film opened with a respectable Rs 1.65 crore on its first Friday, followed by a significant upward trend through the weekend—Rs 1.85 crore on Saturday and Rs 2.25 crore on Sunday. However, from the first Monday onward, the collections saw a predictable weekday decline, settling at Rs 85 lakhs on Thursday. The first-week total gave the film a solid Rs 9.9 crore foundation. Second week trends show waning momentum Week 2 brought a sharper dip in earnings. Starting with Rs 75 lakhs on its second Friday, the film briefly picked up steam over the weekend with Rs 1.1 crore and Rs 1.4 crore on Saturday and Sunday respectively. But the weekday numbers saw a sharp fall—Rs 65 lakhs on Monday down to just Rs 30 lakhs by film wrapped up its second week with Rs 5.13 crore, reflecting a drop of nearly 48% compared to its opening week. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Formigamento persistente? The film earned Rs 60 lakh on Friday, showing a mild uptick from Thursday's numbers. However, that momentum didn't last. As the weekdays began, the numbers dropped sharply—Rs 29 lakh on Monday and just Rs 20 lakh on Tuesday, marking the film's lowest daily figure so far. While a few centres are still drawing small crowds, it's evident that Narivetta is reaching the final leg of its theatrical run. 'Narivetta' holds on despite big releases in theatres Tovino Thomas' thriller 'Narivetta' might not be smashing records, but it's far from forgotten. The film has quietly stayed in the game for nearly three weeks—even with massive releases like 'Thug Life' and Mohanlal's 'Chotta Mumbai' re-release eating up screen space.

Mohanlal's L2: Empuraan and Thudarum together cross Rs 30 Crore mark in North America, setting a new benchmark for Malayalam cinema in 2025
continues to rewrite the box office playbook for Malayalam cinema overseas. In a record-breaking year, his two major 2025 releases — L2: Empuraan and Thudarum — have collectively grossed over Rs 30 crore in the North American market, a first for a Malayalam star and the industry. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Leading the charge is Empuraan directed by , the much-awaited sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer. The film stormed through the North American box office, collecting a massive $2,707,540 (USD conversion: $2,358,412 / Rs 20.2 crore) from 449 locations. In the USA alone, the film netted $1,412,461, while Canada contributed an impressive $1,295,079. The Malayalam version dominated with $2,567,297, while the Telugu version added $140,243 — officially making Empuraan the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever in North America. Meanwhile, Thudarum dircted by , which was released in fewer locations (186 screens), held its own against bigger pan-India titles. The film earned $1,582,079 (USD conversion: $1,393,729 / Rs 11.94 crore) in North America. In the USA, Thudarum collected $883,000, while the Canadian box office brought in $699,079. Despite a tighter release, the film's strong content and Mohanlal's loyal overseas following ensured packed shows in several cities. Together, Empuraan and Thudarum have amassed Rs 33.96 crore (approx. $3.75 million) in North America in 2025 — a phenomenal milestone for any Malayalam actor. This joint success also signals the growing appetite for Malayalam films overseas, especially in territories like Canada, where both films recorded remarkable footfalls. Industry is calling this a historic achievement, with Empuraan shattering all previous Malayalam records and Thudarum comfortably adding to the star's overseas tally. For Mohanlal, whose fan base spans generations, this dual success proves his enduring popularity and the increasing global reach of Malayalam cinema. With Mohanlal's next big release already in the works, 2025 is shaping up to be one of the superstar's most dominant years at the global box office.

Box Office: After Empuraan and Thudarum, Mohanlal's THIS 18 year old film's re-release is shattering records; Read on
The re-release fever of Indian movies in theatres is at an all time high with audiences making big plans to celebrate the films that shaped their childhood or films that take them back to a simpler time, with their friends and family. One such re-release of last week is Mohanlal 's Chotta Mumbai directed by Anwar Rasheed, which was among the highest grossing Mollywood movies of all time at the time of its release in 2007. After the historic theatrical success of Empuraan and Thudarum, Mohanlal fans are certainly on cloud 9. The last few years have not been too easy for them with a flow of back to back duds barring Neru, which gave glimpses of what a decent word of mouth Mohanlal movie can do at the box office. After Thudarum's bumper digital reception, fans of Mohanlal turned up to theatres again, this time to celebrate Chotta Mumbai. Chotta Mumbai, in its re-release, grossed Rs 1.65 crore over the 3 day weekend in Kerala and the hold on first Monday is mind-boggling with it managing around Rs 35 lakh, to take the 4 day cume to around Rs 2 crore. The movie seems unstoppable, with more special fan shows being planned in other states. To note, around Rs 25 lakh has come from the rest of India, and the overseas markets in the first 4 days already. The collections of Chotta Mumbai compare well with the last week's new releases in Kerala. Asif Ali's Abhyanthara Kuttavali collected in the vicinity of Rs 2.70 crore after 4 days while Kamal Haasan's Thug Life in 5 days could manage a little under Rs 2.50 crore. What's interesting is that Chotta Mumbai's Monday collections are higher than both the competing films. It will be no surprise if Chotta Mumbai ends up with a higher gross collection than the abovementioned films, that too in its re-release. Mohanlal has proven that his stardom knows no bounds. With the right film, he can created unprecedented euphoria across the world. When a re-release can do this kind of business from a small state, it is safe to say that you are dearly loved. To all the Mohanlal fans, have you been able to watch the movie in theatres yet?
