Family grieves woman killed on Pomona freeway by loose truck tire
Ingrid Zapata, 57, of Moreno Valley, was killed at around 2:30 a.m. Monday morning when the tire and rim of a pickup truck snapped off, bounced across lanes and over the freeway median before cutting through the top of her car.
"She was the most beautiful person inside and out and she radiated love," said Zapata's daughter, Kimberly Paiz. "You know everyone one day is going to die. Just not that way. Not like that. Not her."
Zapata, a mother of three and grandmother, was on her way home after driving a church friend to the airport earlier in the morning.
Her husband Orlando is beside himself with grief. He says that his wife was his princess and that he'll love her forever.
"She was always thinking about other people and not herself. She would be sick and still go to work," said Alejandra Alonzo, Zapata's sister. "I have to drive around."
She was a long-time school bus driver on the Morongo Reservation, who many now remember as having a heart of gold. Family says that she worked hard to provide for and protect them, as well as everyone around her. They said that she often opened her home for people who needed a place to stay or eat, also helping people find work or get out of trouble.
"It didn't matter your background. It didn't matter if you were right or wrong, if you needed help she was there for you," said Alvaro Reyes, Zapata's son.
It's that lasting message that the family says has provided them some sort of peace in the middle of their unbearable loss.
"I just feel like she helped the world and now I think it's time for the world to help her," said Carlos Jovel, another of Zapata's sons. "Put her to rest as she deserves."
Family members are raising money online to help cover her funeral expenses. The GoFundMe can be found by searching for the keywords: "Remembering Ingrid's Unconditional Love."
"Although we don't understand it, and we probably never will, she's in his glory," Paiz said. "And I think that's what she would want everyone to know. That she lied for God. And God's the one that took her in his perfect time, even though it wasn't our time."
California Highway Patrol officers are still investigating the incident. They say that the truck driver has not been cited. Zapata's family wants to know if the incident was just a freak accident, or if there was possible negligence in how the tire was last installed.

Man dies while fleeing immigration operation at Monrovia Home Depot, city says
A man was hit and killed on the 210 Freeway after he ran from an immigration operation at a Monrovia Home Depot, according to city officials. The immigration operation happened on Monday morning. The Monrovia Police Department said the man ran away from the Home Depot at 1625 Mountain Avenue as Immigration and Enforcement agents approached the hardware store. The man crossed Evergreen Avenue and ran onto the eastbound 210 Freeway less than 10 minutes after agents arrived, according to the City of Monrovia. That's when the California Highway Patrol said he was struck by a car. The Monrovia Fire Department took the man to the hospital, where he later died. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said agents were not pursuing the man. Homeland Security was unaware of the man's death until CHP contacted the agency hours after its operation ended.

Original Tesla co-founder takes major shot at one of Elon Musk's signature products: 'Looks like a dumpster'
In a recent interview, one of Tesla's original co-founders blasted what is arguably the company's most-hyped product of the past several years. What's happening? As much as Elon Musk's name is now synonymous with Tesla, that wasn't always the case. The electric vehicle pioneer was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Mart Tarpenning, with Eberhard serving as CEO for the first several years. Eberhard was ousted from that role and eventually left the company in 2007, with Musk taking over the company's top spot a year later. Now, as Gizmodo reports, Eberhard has spoken about some of the recent happenings at Tesla, including harsh critiques of the company's Cybertruck. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Great Rates and Award-Winning Service Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect The comments came from a lengthy interview with Kim Java (@ItsKimHava), an EV-focused YouTuber. "I am actually disappointed that Tesla canceled its low-end car program because that's what the world needs," Eberhard said. "Not a truck that looks like a dumpster." The first part of those comments seems to reference Tesla's previously planned budget car model, which was unofficially referred to as the Model 2. That car was expected to sell for between $25,000 and $30,000, or roughly 30% less than any other car in its lineup. Plans for the Model 2 have reportedly been scrapped, although Musk denied those reports last year. Why is this important? The Cybertruck was a huge swing by Tesla. Not only was it the company's first truck, but it generated years' worth of buzz for its monochromatic, straight-edged look. In the hype leading up to its release, Musk called the truck "one of those special products that comes along only once in a while," and suggested that Tesla's Texas Gigafactory could one day be making up to 250,000 Cybertrucks per year. Recent sales numbers, however, show the hype has far exceeded the actual demand. Would you buy an EV if it only took you five minutes to charge? Sign me up Depends on the cost No way I already have one Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. In the second quarter of 2025, Tesla sold just 4,306 Cybertrucks, a drop of more than 50% from the same period last year. Overall, the company sold 12.6% fewer cars in the second quarter of this year than it did in 2024. Perhaps a lower-cost model, such as the Model 2, would have helped put more EVs on the road. But for now, much of Musk's future vision for Tesla seems to be centered on self-driving cars and autonomous services like the robotaxi. What can I do about this? Whether it's from Tesla or another automaker, switching from a gas-powered vehicle to an EV is one of the most environmentally friendly purchases a person can make. Time is of the essence to get the best possible deal on a new electric vehicle, however, as the recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act will end a federal $7,500 EV tax credit at the end of September. 2026 Lucid Air Review, Pricing, and Specs
Specs See all specs EPA Est. Range 406–480 Miles Seating 5 Seats Cargo Capacity 22 Cubic Feet Powertrain Electric Drivetrain All-Wheel Drive, Rear-Wheel Drive Limited Warranty 4 Years/50,000 Miles Overview When it comes to long-distance EV motoring, there's no better choice than the 2026 Lucid Air. With its ability to go far on a fully charged battery and its quick charging times when a stop is necessary, this luxury sedan is unmatched when it comes to EV road-tripping. The entry-level Pure trim offers enough premium content to justify its price tag, while higher-end Grand Touring and Sapphire models add performance and show-stopping features, including up to 1234 horsepower and a glass roof. Expert Tip: If you've been waiting for an EV without range anxiety before making the switch to electric, your wait is over. The Air Grand Touring managed to travel an astounding 410 miles in our highway range test. What's New for 2026? The Lucid Air gains access to the Tesla Supercharger network this year, and there are other small changes as well. All trims now come with a mobile charging cord as well as a revised air-conditioning compressor, which is said to improve the cooling of the cabin and reduce ambient noise. The Touring trim boasts a longer EPA-estimated range of up to 431 miles, an increase of 25 miles from before. The Grand Touring trim now comes with 20-way power-adjustable seats with heat, ventilation, and massage. A new 19-inch wheel design called Aeronaut is also available on most models. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Lucid Motors Air starts at $72,400 and goes up to $250,500 depending on the trim and options. Pure $72,400 Touring $81,400 Grand Touring $116,400 Sapphire $250,500 0 $100k $200k $300k $400k We'd steer toward the Pure model. It offers a respectable 430 horsepower and 420 miles of estimated driving range, yet it costs significantly less than the upper Grand Touring and Sapphire trims. The Pure also comes with 12-way power-adjustable heated front seats, plenty of driver-assistance features, and a large touchscreen. Other models have dual electric motors that provide all-wheel drive and a variety of horsepower ratings: The Touring model generates 620 horsepower, and the Grand Touring makes 1050. The new top dog is the 1234-hp Lucid Air Sapphire, which has three electric motors. The additional motor is mounted at the rear and provides insane acceleration performance to compete with the Tesla Model S Plaid. Despite riding on conventional steel coil springs rather than air springs, the sedan felt calm and smooth in the appropriately named Smooth drive mode. Our main complaint was with our example's 21-inch wheels on low-profile performance tires that produced notable road noise on a section of coarse pavement. 0–60-MPH Times In Comparison: The Pure and Touring models' power deficit is more noticeable on the way to 130 mph, which the Touring managed to dispatch in 12.0 seconds versus the Grand Touring, which did it in 10.3. View Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Range, Charging, and Battery Life C/D Range Test(s): 300 miles (Pure), 280 miles (Touring), 410 miles (Grand Touring) The Air has the longest range of any electric vehicle currently on the market, according to EPA estimates. Grand Touring models feature a 118.0-kWh battery pack and DC fast-charging capability, while the Touring trim uses a smaller 92.0-kWh version and the Pure features an 84.0-kWh battery. The base Pure has an estimated driving range of 420 miles, whereas the mid-range Touring is estimated to travel 431 miles per charge—this figure is increased for 2026, from 406 miles previously. The Grand Touring model offers up to 512 miles of range. On our 75-mph highway route, the Grand Touring went 410 miles, making it the longest-range EV we've ever tested; the Touring we tested went for just 280 miles before needing to be recharged, and the RWD Pure went on for 300 miles before the battery depleted. Plugged into a fast charger, the sedan is said to be able to recoup 300 miles of range in 21 minutes. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe EPA City Ratings: 108-149 MPGe 108-149 MPGe EPA Highway Ratings: 101-142 MPGe The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 Air yet, but the 2025 model earned ratings as high as 149 MPGe city, 142 MPGe highway, and 146 MPGe combined. MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gas equivalent, an EPA metric that estimates PHEV and EV vehicle fuel efficiency. For more information about the Air's efficiency, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo First Row: Make no mistake, the Air is intended to be a luxury car, and its handsome interior is fitted with rich-looking materials and cutting-edge technology. Lucid is especially proud of the sedan's expansive passenger space. The sedan's front center console provides generous storage space behind the retractable lower touchscreen and inside the large center console bin that houses a set of cupholders as well as slots to place a smartphone. Second Row: The rear seats are comfortable for two adults, but it's possible to squeeze three back there for short trips. The Air's optional glass roof makes it feel even airier and helps with outward visibility. Cargo Capacity: The Air's trunk is a roomy 22.1 cubic feet, and we stuffed eight carry-on suitcases inside. There is a smaller front trunk—or frunk—as well, and it fits two extra suitcases in our testing.
